Here is a Nice Article back home of the view of a spectator who has never witnessed a Wrestling State Final. You will recall that a few weeks ago I described my brief brush with the sport of wrestling when I was in junior high school. My recollections were a dismal delve into self-pity that led me to give up wrestling, in favor of … anything. Had I the opportunity in those days to witness the 79th Annual Wrestling State Finals — an op-portunity that I enjoyed this past Saturday — perhaps my career as a wrestler would have been extended. For those of you who require instant satisfaction, each mano a mano match is contested in three, two minute rounds — six minutes to victory. Four mats are used simultaneously, keeping the ac-tion fast and furious. The Saturday night Finals are a spectacle. The wrestlers from each weight class are introduced individually under a bright spotlight in a darkened Bankers Life Fieldhouse. They meet their coaches on the promenade to the epicenter. The athlete’s accomplishments are read over the pub-lic address system, then the entire entourage moves forward, culminating when the two combat-ants shake hands at center mat. I kept seeing Russel Crowe meeting Charlton Heston for a quaint wrestle-off. When your match is complete, and before the next match begins, the wrestlers climb an eight tier podium to receive their medals, to the appreciation of everyone. Let’s face it. The Indiana High School Athletic Association knows how to put on a show! Wrestlers compete individually, though they score points for their teams. That means if you are having a bad day, you can’t count on a teammate to cover your shortcomings. At this level, you have to be on your “A” game, all of the time. Our Montgomery County contingent of Tanner Webster (2nd Place) and Seth Johnson (4th Place) of North Montgomery, and Boone Welliever (3rd Place) of Southmont willingly met this challenge … and succeeded! Put yourself in their shoes, if you will. Think back to when you were sixteen, seventeen years old. Picture yourself standing in front of 11,000 people in a wrestling singlet, in the spotlight, AND on statewide television. Then ask yourself to perform your very best. All three of our county superstars did just that. But more so, they competed with the integrity and class that is a credit to their families, their coaches, and schools. All three fell a bit short of their overall goal, yet each accepted their defeat with a grace beyond their years. Now picture, if you will, experiencing the biggest disappointment of your young life, and stand-ing before the media answering questions about your defeat. Seth, the sophomore, calmly talked about getting better. Boone, who joined his father Jamie as a third place finisher, spoke proudly of succeeding for his father. Tanner, spoke not of coming oh-so-close, but of inspiring the younger wrestlers to great achievements. In my last column, I suggested that wrestling builds strong men. Seth, Boone, and Tanner proved me right, and they have me wrestling with a decision I made a long time ago.

I say we delay the Podium by one match, this allows the loser to calm down and gather themselves. Nothing like losing the big one and getting put on Podium immediately afterwards. Hoping for Spot Light Face off!

He hasn't been idle, his cardio is nuts, never have I been around someone who has the work ethic he has, I'm just floored on his dedication.

He has been full contact this week in practice, He is chomping at the bit to be to get back on the mat.

What is the minimum size of mat to be used for competition? 38'x38' use to be the High School Standard and 42'x42' was College? Do we recognize NWCA or NFHS rules for wrestling?

Been told by a few in town that the layout in the Civic Center has changed and would not facilitate us anymore. I have never been to Civic Center, so I couldn't tell you if we could still use it or what it use to be. Regardless the sport needs sponsors like Ky Farm Bureau and such to help us grow.

I agree no high school gym. Altech is fine, they need to request to put up center mat lights and spots lights, could be utilized in the equine events. Altech is rough, we just need to polish the diamond in the rough.

I agree with you on what Chad did, should of shaked Nicks hand first, but like you said hes not your ordinary state champ, 3rd person to finish Undefeated in Indiana, Lee was a huge match on a National scale, not state. #1 .vs #7 in the nation. The school support at the finals is nuts, I think Mater Dei bring the whole west side of Evansville to Indy. But honestly what do you not like about the finals of that Caliber? You are correct its held in a big arena that has all the lighting you want that costs big money. Sponsors are big help in Indiana wrestling. That is what we need, KHSAA to ask company's to help. Why cant we secure Rupp or Yum center? It don't cost more than Conseco Fieldhouse. Its not just Indiana that has a big finals setup, Washington state has there finals in the Tacoma Dome. I think a finals like this brings the fans (as you can see), gives the youth wrestlers to something to strive for. Build it and they will come! Wrestling is second to Soccer in youth participation and we need to capitalize on that. There is no wrestling in South Central Kentucky, how huge of a boost for the sport if you got Bowling Green, Warren Central, Warren East, Greenwood, South Warren on board? Those are huge School systems in one County not to mention pick up Glasgow area schools. Our biggest goal should be to spread the interest in this great sport so it grows in Ky, then you should have no problem getting the finals these kids deserve.

Why don't we request the KHSAA board to a Spring coaches meeting...not the committee. Lets get this out in the open, not hide behind emails. If your in the position to make decisions then your in position to hear the complaints. Somebody has to be held accountable. Lets push this meeting. Don't let them say "We will only meet with selected coaches" because they will choose who attends. Also lets get some coaches on the board....not the committee. What seats are coming up soon?

Something we need to seriously consider, going to a 16 man bracket. Add regional tournament. Its mentally and a physical drain to wrestle upwards of 6 matches dragged out over 2 days. Consolation finals need to be there own round. Finals must be under the lights, accolades need to heard during face off AND NEEDS TO BE 1 MAT! Podium needs to be delayed 1 match, give this kids time to process a loss in the finals before you stick him on the podium for everyone to see...this is plain cruel! Podium area should allow a parent to take pictures, they deserve the right! If KSHAA isn't going to change it for wrestling, then boys and girls basketball doesn't need the flashy entrance either for the finals! KSHAA says they had positive feedback, I want those published. Just as easy to say we have thousand of complaints. And to build Wrestling in Kentucky we have to give and show the youth something to strive for, if it lacks in luster theirs efforts and wanting to wrestle diminish.
