  1. The second ref is there to look for locked hands, out of bounds or other calls that the first could not see.  They are there to assist the first one in the calls if asked or if questioned.  Correct, not to blow their whistle and stop action or interrupt it.  But if they see locked hands they are allowed (and expected) to call it or let other ref know.  As well as out of bounds takedowns etc.  They don't need help with time, there are two table workers and a buzzer for that for the other 755 matches and it goes just fine with one then.

  2. My problem with the refs is two of the best two in the state weren't even wearing shirts to ref.  They should have taken the two worst that were on the mat and put them in the position of errand runner and paper person instead of those two.  Also I think there needs to be a better use of the two refs on the mat.  The whole purpose for having two refs is not to just catch the wrestlers when they go out of bounds, but to look for locked hands and pay attention to what is happening in the match and make calls and discuss things to get the best outcome in the match.  Not to say "well Im not the official you need to ask him".  And then when you ask the head one he shouldn't say "its my call".

  3. Part of what hurt Moore was we had several guys already have 5 matches in the day and had to forfeit their final match of the day and lose the placing/advancement points to other teams. If I remember right from that night we had 4 guys who forfeited their final match and got fourth instead of the possibility of third. Then to lose by only 7 when if just a couple of those 4 kids had won (one forfeit was to a Trinity wrestler as well) it may have been a different outcome...man I wish 6 matches in a day would happen!! And we had three guys who got stuck in the losing bracket early and only had two or three matches all day, that hurt as well. And had three varsity starters still not in the lineup.

  4. There are some differences there, his kids were in Catholic grade school and just continued on through Catholic school and was just at Fern Creek program due to his past as well as availability. I think really the only ones that people question are those kids that aren't in Catholic School up until High School and then start going. As far as out of county kids there are no Catholic schools in surrounding counties to Jefferson that they would be able to attend and continue wrestling.

Pinthis I will agree with you on that, and if I was a high school coach it would make me a little mad too.Just look at all the middle school state champs that wrestled in the fern creek youth program that went to trinity or x.Just off the top of my head I know of 6.So they are leaveing these public schools for what they think will help their kids more than just wrestling.Hitchings for example says it all,his kids go through the fern creek youth program and he sends them to Trinity, even though he went to fern creek and is now the head coach.I do think Hiichings and Branch will have fern creek back in the hunt for titles very soon.

  5. I would disagree with that statement. But say that for SOME people of the catholic faith there is no topic more important than religion. So say that for everyone is way off. I deal with the public on a daily basis and am surprised at how people react on a daily basis to certain situations, nothing to do with sports or schools but rather adult life in general. Many are the first to complain and cry about what is going on until the get something that they feel is fair to them. Usually it means that they get something for free out of my company. I go into peoples houses all the time and see religious artifacts and slogans up and yet the are quick to curse and complain when something comes up that they personally have to take care of that I will not do. Again this isn't for everyone but the same goes for school. Not everyone sends their kids to catholic school because of that. My kids are the first generation on my wifes side to not go to catholic school for 5 generations. But her and her brothers don't care for the attitudes that the catholic school institution has right now in combination with the rising tuition costs. And like many people have said, neither side is going to change their mind about how they feel but it's just a shame that they get away with it like they do.

For people of the catholic faith there is no topic more important than religion, and the public schools have alienated us.There is no title my children can achieve that is greater than being in the state of grace.I have used the examples of the life of Christ to challenge my children.Work like it is all up to you and pray like it is all up to God is our motto.I do not push it on anyone but I dare anyone to try and take it from us.Public schools can help individuals achieve great things, but if we have to pretend that God doesnt exist while we are there being oppressed, sensored, forced to deny our faith, then we must go to catholic schools if we can afford it.For the record I went to public schools as did my wife,we do not fit into most of the private school stereo types that were posted in this thread. Our ultimate goal is eternity with God and along the way we will be in the world competing in sports, and seeking jobs but hopefully obeying a set of standards that keeps us from being of the world. This is my opinion take or leave it but this is why I would choose a catholic school for my children .

  6. But the problem in using percents is that there is a large number of public school students who don't even take the ACT test becauses they aren't going to college, they are going to a trade school that doesn't require it, going to work in the coal mine or local factory or the family farm. And then there are the number of kids who don't graduate and don't ever plan on it so they don't take the test. And this is considering the amount of money that someone else is paying to get an athlete to the school not just the kids who are going to public school and paying nothing for it. And the percentage of kids going to college is of course higher for these reasons. I would never pay for my kids to go to high school just because of the school...I am not Catholic so that wouldn't convince me to send them there for that reason.

Like Trent said it starts at the top...way too much money being made off of them and so they don't want it to stop.

This a very poor comparison, you list the number of private schools in the entire state. But this is a much smaller number than the number of public schools, also the average number of students at private institutions is way below the average number of students at public institutions. Total number of public high students in the state is 220,920. Total number of private high school students 14,611. That means .001% of pulic students vs .0023% of private school students had those type ACT scores, more thane twice as many percentage wise did better at private than at public. Sheesh, apples and oranges.

Believe me I am far from wealthy, but I do regard education as a way to better one's self and yes I do expect my kids to go to college. Everyone should. From every class. Why wouldnt you?

  7. And there is no way any money from a local supporter could mysteriously find it's way in account outside of the place in Ohio...right....like saying noone in college gets extras either because they are regulated...

Whatsoever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me (Mt 25:40)

Trinity is committed to the values of compassion and personal responsibility. The long tradition of Catholic social teaching and action is grounded in the belief of the dignity of all humans and that people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. We strive to guide students toward a path of compassion, responsibility and morality – this is why we place such an emphasis on service projects. Trinity hosts school-wide projects that benefit And therethe Red Cross, Dare to Care, Catholic Relief Services and many more. In addition, students have an individual service requirement for each class.

Above is from Trinity's website. Yea, admitting to harboring animosity towards a school that stands for compassion and personal responsibility definitely isn't misplaced bitterness at all. The graduating class logged over 20,000 hours of community service...that same community in which you are blessed enough to call home. CAL is an awsome school, but what if the boys are Catholic?! Why wouldn't they want to attend Trinity soley based on that? You continue to wallow and moan about the sports when it is only a small part of why families choose Trinity. Trinity and St. X's reputations stand on their own merrit...sports aside. I have no hidden agenda. It's pretty straight forward--you bashed a very well respected school, a father of St. X boys explained the reasoning behind sending his kids to a Catholic high school, you separated Trinity from St. X, I am explaining why a family would choose Trinity. I firmly believe that public schools are great in many cases, but will not stand idly by and let some uninformed, misguided, bitter man regurgitate anecdotal stories as fact and not call you out. Did YOU not read the earlier post stating that all financial aid applicaitons are sent to a third party out of state? I'm fairly certain that there is no box to check or line to fill in a 40 time or vertical jump hight in the applications. As an FYI--I'm not a Trinity grad, nor do I have any skin in the game one way or the other. I just disapprove of such negativity...especially since you claim God, academics, and character are important to you. Hypocrite comes to mind, and sounds very appropriate.

  8. Like I said, I am not affiliated with Trinity. You speak of kids getting replaced if a better one comes along, um sorry but I'm pretty sure that happens everywhere ie. wrestle offs (CC is a good example). Public or private, thats the nature of the beast. I know at X that all financial assistance money is handled by an outsourced company in Ohio that only bases their decisions on income, household size, and money available. No where on the financial assistance application does it ask what sport does your child play. Also seems that all the schools you named are pretty much the same public schools I had named, the list does not go much further than that (check the report cards). These schools even though public, do turn away students, and believe it or not may take into special consideration for certain athletes. I know of quite a few underprivildged students who have attended private institutions, but no you're right, they were not approached, nor were the ones who could afford it. I dont know who approached your sons but I know alot of young champion athletes who have never been by private but only by public. Alot of the rec football youth leagues play at high schools and there are always people from the schools there. I dont know who fed you the bologna, but you got to do whats best for your kid, if it was a former alum bragging because most alum support the school, then that has nothing to do with the school itself.

  9. All I gotta say is....wow? You believe that???

What line of bologna is it you are suggesting about private schools in Louisville. I'm not from Trinity, but come on, 3rd in state at wrestling, 1st in state at football (3rd in nation), 1st in basketball. Great education and an alumni association that lasts a lifetime and surpasses any public school in the state No one at any private school is going after either one of these kids. Do you even know the situation? I know that one of these two did not originally learn the sport at N.O. as you suggest. I say if parents can afford to give their children better oppurtunities, then why not. Nothing against North, it is a wonderful school, but dont hate on a private institution "just because". Ultimately the decision will be up to the parents and their kids with no influence from any private school. They train togethor so most likely if one leaves the other will follow, mainly because they are close in weight and ability. Either way they are great wrestlers, and great kids and will continue to be in the future, best of luck to them.

  10. He tends to not push the pace as much as he should and of course I am biased but there was two questionable calls in the match against Fausz, one that gave Fausz points and one that didn't give Rosado points. But he has one more year so we hope he will improve as much from this year to next year as last year to this year.

So he didn't wrestle hard in the matches he lost? Fausz, Willen and Castellano are lucky he didn't try any harder.

  11. I don't have a dog in this fight one way or the other, but don't say ANY other team would have taken them because that would not be true. Our team would not have as well as I know others that wouldn't. There is also a sportsmanship and lessons in life that coaches are supposed to be teaching as well. That is what we do..

People can say anything they want, but let's face it. ANY other team would do the same thing in CC's situation. Anyone who says differently is an idiot or completely delusional. Larue would do the same and so would Union. "If winning isn't everything, why would they keep score?" - VInce Lombardi

  12. Friday should be run with 7 mats, 8 might be too many if a team has many kids up at the same time, but 7 would let them get another round in probably on Friday or at bare minimum a half a round like the 1.5 on Thursday. Then back down to 6 for Saturday and the semifinals definitely should have been done on 4 mats. That was the longest round of the whole tournament, it was over 2.5 hours.

  13. Seneca is definitely due to Anderson leaving and the coaches that took over just don't have what the "Old School" coach did. I think Woodford is more due to the fact that other schools in the area and state started getting better and catching up in combination with Coach Parks leaving.

  14. I don't remember the JCTC ending at 5 last year. Wasn't it at Iroqouis? It was late that year, like 11 when we got out, maybe that was two years ago. But like BigEd said, I have been to everyone for the last 20+ years and they are never done by 5 because we used to clear out the gym at 3ish and come back after that. I agree with the prices being too high at some places as well, and I could be wrong again, but I don't remember a $7 all session pass in many years, at least 5 or 6.. Cooler fees I have no problem with, its money thats taken away from the concession stand and you said in your post to make up the higher gate fee at the concession stand, but if a team brings in 4 coolers then there is no way you will make money off them but will have to clean up all the mess they leave behind.

You may not agree with all or any of these, but I've compiled this list from the last 10 years I've spent in this sport from what I've heard from coaches, wrestlers, refs, fans, and boosters, and the time I've spent in other states with wrestling and other sports:

    1. Don't gouge the fans at the gate - JCTC was $13 for both days this year for one adult. Last year it was $7 for a 2 day pass. I heard several people calling their significant other this year and telling them not to come because it was so expensive. High ticket prices only supports the sport at one school, not the sport as a whole! Keep it reasonable for a one or two day event. $10 or less for a 2 day pass is reasonable for most tournaments. Make it up in concessions and t-shirt sales.

    2. No cooler fees for teams - If a team chooses to pack drinks in a cooler, why charge them? So you can compensate for what you lost at the concession stand? I saw a team this year start packing drinks in their gym bags when they heard there was a cooler fee. If you're concerned about what you lose, add $10 to the team entry fee. At least the school is paying for it then, as opposed to a coach at the gate.

    3. Make sure your concession stand is stocked - I can't tell you how many times I've been to tournaments where they run out of drinks, food, etc. Bad experience for fans and wrestlers.

    4. Allow re-entry without buying another ticket - I don't see this much, but when I do it pisses me off. Wrestling tournaments don't last 2 hours, they're AT LEAST a 5-6 hour affair. If someone buys a ticket, they're paid. This is a pitiful way to make money.

    5. Keep down-time to a minimum and stay on schedule - I won't get into the seeding in advance, that only makes sense. But, keep the tournament running, mats full, and eliminate the long process of deciding the champs. Tell me why JCTC ended at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday in 2011 and 9:00 p.m. this year.

    6. Recruit workers - don't hold a tournament if you don't have the people to help. Usually this is seen at the scorers tables.

  15. They are trying to start a middle school sports program just as the high schools have. They have football, basketball track and field and a few others. so they are trying to expand them all now to make it a full competitive area. Of course the hard part right now is financial, as other programs and services are being cut because funding is being cut.I believe there are only 3 schools in Jeff Co that can because the middle school and the high school are in one school. Moore, Brown and one other, cant think of it right off.

Does anyone know why its not allowed in Jefferson Co.? Seems to put those kids at a disadvantage, they are not even allowed to scrimmage against the high schoolers during the regular season.

  16. It appears from the video that one end of the arena has very little seating, so maybe 95% of the seating is in 80% of the arena. If that is the case then it would be fine putting the mats more towards one end. Also there is no upper deck so the seats are lower down. I don't think that the state tournament has ever drawn more then 3500 people in the Frankfort center. They don't allow people sitting behind the screen they put up so that took out about 200+ seats right there and there were always open seats in the rest of the arena as well. This venue should be fine. I would say for many it will come down to the concessions!! Everyone agreed that they were getting out of control in Frankfort so we shall see what they are like here!! Everyone will know by noon on Friday....

The Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center in Frankfort seats roughly 5,000 people. I would say it's pretty near capacity for the State Tournament. I've been told that 6 mats are going to be placed at one end of Alltech Arena and we would basically just be using half of the arena. Online it says that Alltech Arena seats 5,700. Seems to me that there would not be near enough seating and some of the views from seats near the center or opposite end of the Arena would be horrible. Anyone know if this is true??

  17. Maybe if we double the number of schools that participate in it then we can get to that size arena...but for right now it is way too expensive for one that huge.

That Frankfort venue was probably nice in its day for whatever it was designed-but not wrestling. With the growth of the sport (PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THIS NEXT SENTENCE), we need to bring the sport out of the dark ages.

The state finals should be held at Rupp Arena, Freedom Hall, or the new YUM Center.
