  1. Like threequarter said, it's not perfect.  But it's a step in the right direction.  Something had to be done from the old school days.  When I coached m.s. wrestling a few years back, I had parents so worried that I was going to make their kids starve and lose 5 lbs they didn't want to let their kids go out for wrestling.  That was based on the perception of wrestling from back in their high school days.  The weight management program has made that better even if it's not perfect.

My point of asking about this i guess is I think kids have different metabolisms and that a kid takes the test at the beginning of the season and gets pigeon holed into a spot.  But by the end of the season, he's way down close to the weight class below where the fat test said he could be at without trying.  I've seen a couple of cases of this happening, 1 with a kid that made the finals last year.  I would think in cases like that, there could be a re-assessment or something.  Doesn't sound like there is.

You are not restricted by your body fat testing technically. You can get a doctor's note saying you are healthy to wrestle at whatever your weight is, even if it is below the minimum weight allowed by alpha testing. So if you think you are healthy enough to go below the weight it says, get a doctor's note. Simple as that.

  2. I know it's still awhile before wrestlers can hit the mat again, but I was wondering if any coaches in Louisville would let me (or other young refs) come in and ref wrestle-offs. This will be my 2nd year reffing, and I was only able to get 1 job reffing over the summer, so I'd like to brush up on my reffing skills before the season starts again. Just send me a message with your thoughts about reffing your wrestle-offs and your contact information so I can reach you once the season starts. This will be good for both the referees (because practice makes perfect) and wrestlers because they will get a better feel for how a referee will officiate the matches.

I think it would be good for any other refs on here who need practice to post a similar thread. Hopefully with the support of coaches we can improve the quality and longevity of referees in the state of Kentucky. I know a couple of former young referees who quit reffing because they made a lot of mistakes in their first couple matches, got ripped a good one by the coaches, and quit because of that. With practice comes better reffing, less griping from coaches and wrestlers alike, and ultimately an overall improvement in the quality of Kentucky wrestling.

  3. i would think zarth is going to stay 119 hes not very big and he has won 119 at state 2 times there wouldnt be a good reason to go 125

zarth is diesel for a 119. his arms are bigger than most 130s, and he has a very powerful shot.

  4. It's a shame that Lexington does not have better teams.  That is really something to look at...why Lexington can't get youth programs going?  But I guess thats another tread.

Woodford and Dunbar are pretty much Lexington teams.

  5. Congrats to Justin, he is a great guy and he earned his title.......He has a great chance at being a 2x if he keeps up the good work.......Branch should have been in the finals with him.....but no thanks to the ref for not calling stalling on Miller whom stalled the whole match  from the start and Branch wasnt given his back points when he had miller on his back in a cradle.....   :-o

if he should have been in the finals, he would have taken 3rd not 5th...

  6. I was reffing a middle school tournament in early January, the one held at Fern Creek, and I was talking to the Union coach there. He said his sister or brother had 4 or 5 boys still young that wrestled, then he said a cousin or something had a few kids too. It was a long time ago, but from what I remember we'll be having a lot more Ervins keep coming. However, some of them don't always wrestle in Kentucky, a lot wrestle in Indiana because they are so close to the border.

  7. I know i'm restating what's already been said a million times in this thread....but true pioneer, if you think about it...you may not like Matt getting dq'ed...no one wants to see that.  But if he had said NOTHING, like I'm sure his coach and many others have told him to do in the past,

    1) he'd still be wrestling at state this weekend

    2) he'd be on the opposite side of Reid

It did him absolutely no good to say what he did.  Maybe it made him feel better for 2 seconds.  But if he cares about wrestling or his team, it should make him feel bad for a lonnng time that he got DQed.  The ref doesn't care, nor should he have to tolerate that.  Hopefully someone close to Matt will make him see that he shouldn't have done what he did.  You're his team mate, perhaps you should try to not make a joke out of it and tell him he was right.  Tell him "dude...you messed up, quit screwing up!!!"

Thankyou. I would have DQed him also, we are told to throw a wrestler out if he cusses at you or insults you, and the same goes for coaches or fans.

bontrager and voth cant both make semis, they will meet in quarters MAYBE, but i think it will be vinsant zeppa in semis and engle (good lord easy draw) and wempe on other side

  10. You have to get the reversal before back points right?

yes, you can only have a reversal or nearfall when you have control. however, if you are going out of bounds while in the rolling through on a peterson, then it is an escape. it's in the case manual.

  11. All the criticism about refs doing a bad job is bogus. I used to blast referrees while I was wrestling, but then I started reffing this year. If you think the reffing is bad, then do something about it. I'm sick of all these people who criticize refs but when they are done with wrestling, they don't go back and ref, they just keep criticizing. If you want reffing to improve in the state, become a ref and be a good one. In time, your reputation will spread as being a good ref, and you will be assigned more often and to the more prestigious tournaments. I received good reviews this year from almost all coaches, and it paid off for me. I came in late, so I didn't get a lot scheduled, but a little bit into it, coaches started talking me up and I was called to do a lot more tournaments.
