  1. Yeah that's true Deon did beat Derek in December & Derek has never beaten Green.  He had 2 different 2 point losses to him, but Derek is a different wrestler now.  All Derek ever needed was confidence.  His physical skills were as good if not better than everyone else at 215.  Confidence is all he ever lacked and he got that at the Mustang Classic last year.  That win over Dockery put him over the hump and he has been wrestling lights out since.  Bottom line is he is the state champ and the favorite to repeat until someone knocks him off and I don't think that will happen this year at least not when it counts in February.

  2. I am aware of Coach Tichenor's situation.  However, until anything is set in stone, he is still the coach at Iroquois and should be recognized as such, but thanks anyways.  Like Coach Tichenor just stated don't start rumors.  You just concentrate on wrestling.  By the way, how are the grades?  You know, I once had a teammate who had 4 F's and a D.  When he took his report card to our coach, our coach looked at him and simply stated "Looks like you have been spending too much time on one subject!"  Don't spend too much time on one subject Hacker.  Enjoy your summer.

  3. Golsby/Ervin, Thueneman/Courtney, & Wolseifer/Wheeler, all from state, & all have to be listed at the top.  From the regular season, and yes I am biased, I would have to say Nickel/Dockery at the Mustang Classic.  That was definitely a good one.  Another good one was Byrd/Campbell at the finals of the KOB.  It wasn't a typical heavyweight match.  The action was good and they were both very athletic for big guys.

  4. Hey why is my name below Coach Martin and Coach Davis on the coaches ranking list?  We beat both DeSales and Meade Co. in dual meets this year!  It's not fair.  I know there is not a coaches ranking list so I'll create one.

    1.  Coach Martin (DeSales)

    2.  Coach Latsha (Southern)

    3.  Coach Wilkerson (PRP)

    4.  Coach Durham (BC)

    5.  Coach Davis (Meade)

    6.  Coach Tichenor (Iroquois)

    7.  Coach Payne (Holy Cross)

That's all I have because Western, Doss, Shawnee & Fairdale don't know who there coaches are yet.  Of course this is fictitious guys & meant in good fun.  I know some of you are actually wondering if you missed the ranking for coaches on the list.  Point is the rankings are purely put together for fun.  They don't have any meaning especially in the offseason.  Don't get your panties in a bunch because one kid is ranked above you.  Besides, it looks better for you if you beat a kid ranked ahead of you.  Continue to work hard Region 3.  We're getting better.

  5. I don't think Wes will be able to even make 114, at least not consistently.  He had to cut weight hard just to make it to 119 for the Cincy 3-Way.  If he goes beyond 119, the benefit of being at a lower weight will not be there anymore.  He would lose too much strength and even stamina.  He's best at 119 or 125.

  6. So you think Wheeler would have easily beaten Choate.  I could definitely see it happening.  Wheeler really gave Johnny a run for his money at state.  But why was he facing Wolseifer in the 2nd round?  It was because he lost to Wolfe in the Regional finals.  I believe Choate was 3-0 against Wolfe this year.  Choate is a good wrestler he is just not real flashy.  Be careful not to underestimate him.

  7. Not bad for a rookie!  Just a couple of things & both are 112.  Connor Johnstone is going to Manual next year & Wes Lewis will not be able to make 112 unless he cuts off an arm.  He'll probably be at 119 or 125 but more than likely it will be 119.  Overall good effort on the rankings though.  Just think, exactly 4 months until the season starts.  You probably won't have to fight the boredom then.

  8. I appreciate the compliment.  I wish I could coach them again, but unfortunately, since I am not a teacher, I am not a priority.  I don't like it, but sometimes things don't go your way.  Anyway, the kids are great at Doss.  They work hard and are very respectful.  I just hope they don't find themselves in the same situation they were in last year with the coaching situation because the kids don't deserve that.  I agree that overall this is a good job.  There are a few minor setbacks but what job doesn't have a few.  I know Autozone has been asking about head coaching jobs.  Maybe he can apply for this one if he is a teacher. :-)

  9. Okay, Tyler, why are you so interested in this position?  This is the second thread on this website you have started in the last 3 weeks about the Doss job.  I just find that a little odd.  You seem to know an awful lot about this program, not to be associated with it in some way.  By the way, who told you they had new equipment?  I was a coach there last year and still try to keep in contact with some people and I didn't even know that!  What they need is a new wrestling room.  It gets old sharing the auxillary gym with the dance team and cheerleaders on a daily basis.  Anyway, I am not coaching at Doss next year.  Last year, Doss waited until the week before the season started to hire myself and the other coach.  Unfortunately, it seems they are heading in that direction again this year and I don't want to wait.  I am leaning towards accepting another position as an assistant coach elsewhere.  So if you would still like, you can PM me and I will tell you where so that way you can see what tournaments we are at and you can still come over and introduce yourself.

  10. Down and dirty, I thought you said you wanted to apply for the job, but you couldn't find it on the website.  If you got a personal message, then go ahead and apply.  That is of course unless you can't coach for some reason.  Why are you begging everyone else on this website to do so?!  Maybe you don't have the time, college hours or whatnot.  I'm sure they will find someone to coach your son and yes I know who this is.  Like I sent you in a PM, e-mail the athletic director if you want the job!

  11. I didn't say I was going to be the head coach.  I just said the position was filled.  The being fired thing was a joke (some people will get it) because all paraprofessionals are terminated at the end of the year.  The position does have to be posted and I'm pretty sure it was, but my understanding is that it is filled.  I could be wrong.  I know they would rather have a teacer in the building be the head coach.  They open it up to paraprofessionals if they have no one to do that.  You can contact the AD.  You can find his e-mail on the KHSAA website & that is probably the best way to get in contact with him.  Good luck to you.  If you are fortunate enough to get the job, you will have kids that will work hard and have some talent.  They are respectful and will do whatever you ask.  Like I said good luck.

  12. Shawn Johnson won't win regionals next year, let alone state.  Myron is too good for him right now.  That's not saying Shawn can't wrestle.  It's possible for him to place both 2nd at regionals and 2nd at state and lose to the same wrestler.

  13. NOHS, I agree with most of the points you are making & it is a good post.  As for the AD issue, I agree it is a school dependent issue.  It sounds like your AD is wonderful to work with.  How do you think your program would be if he/she wasn't?  Take out your support structure you have in place and how would it truly be?  I just have a couple of more questons?  How old is your program and how much have you improved in that time?  My whole point is that AD and ADMINISTRATIVE support will help improve wrestling programs at each school.  The more schools who have better wrestling programs, then the more competition we will have in this state.  Sure some schools will have it and some won't.  Bottom line is that if your AD or Administration (I'm not saying mine is bad) doesn't support you, then there is not a whole lot you can do to change that.  You then fight an uphill battle and it makes it difficult to coach in general.  You tend to fight other issues instead of just simply coach.  I'm sure there are plenty of coaches who would agree that AD support is either key to their success or lack thereof is a hinderance for them.  I honestly don't know too many programs who have great support that don't have succesful programs.  I'm sorry but I thought the thread was thoughts to improve wrestling in Kentucky.  To me that doesn't just mean what the KHSAA can do like legalize offseason coaching and  get rid of 32 man brackets.  To me that also goes down to what each individual school can do.  As for parent support, well that's another story.  It also sounds like you agree with me that there are plenty of ways around coaching your kids in the offseason and that we shouldn't have to do this.  Make it "legal" for all to do.

Bulldog Leader, my kids must be different from the kids in Northern Kentucky.  I know we were able to keep 2 kids on our team this year just because they had a chance to go to state.  The amazing thing is that they stayed because they thought they had a chance to go to state and wound up realizing they really enjoyed wrestling.  If only we could have got these kids to come out for wrestling when they were younger, which is why stronger grade school and middle school involvement is key and a necessity if we want to get better in this state.

  14. I don't understand why coaches can't coach their kids in the offseason.  I mean I know we say the rule was put in for the big 2 sports but they do find ways around it.  How else do you explain basketball coaches holding "open gyms" during the summer and football coaches having "passing tournaments" and practices during the May & June months that are considered perfectly legit?  There are ways around it and I know it happens anyways.  It seems to me that the KHSAA would just make this legal for all schools as opposed to having some schools with a disadvantage.  If you have a school who is not what you would consider a major power in Kentucky wrestling they may be lucky to only have 1 coach.  However some of the other big schools have assistants, middle school coaches, ex-wrestlers, and so who can coach the kids.  Make it a level playing field for all.  Believe it or not the situation is great for a paraprofessional in comparison to a teacher/coach.  All paraprofessionals have their contracts terminated at the end of the coaching season and have to re-apply for the job as they are not permanent employees of the school system such as teachers are.  That means don't re-apply until just before the fall wrestling season and you can coach your kids all summer long without penalty.  How about that.

As for the 32 man bracket, being from Indiana, I don't like it.  However, I do think until the sport grows a little more in Kentucky, it is essential to have, in order to gain interest for new kids.  Ask a kid if he wants to wrestle and most of the time they say no.  Ask a kid if he wants to wrestle and tell him he has a chance to go to state and your chance is better to get that kid to come out at least for a little bit.  The more kids who come out to wrestle, the more your are going to keep in the end.

As for the Moore, Iroquois, Ft. Knox, Male, Manual, etc. stuff, I don't believe in that.  If you can play, or in this case wrestle, then you can wrestle.  Whether it is a 32 man bracket or a 16 man bracket you are going to get mismatches just as in football with its 4 classes or 6 classes.  If you don't believe me go to IHSAA.org and look up their state wrestling results.  Not all matches are exciting, edge of your seat, nailbitters.  In Indiana, it is not necessarily the 16 man bracket that allows for the "chance" of better competition at state, it is the 3 weekends before state that make that possible.  You have to be on your game just 1 weekend in Kentucky to make it to state 32 man bracket or not.  In Indiana, you have to be at your best 3 weekends in a row.  Like I stated before, Kentucky still needs to keep the 32 man bracket for state until the interest increases and the sport grows immensely.  Once that happens, I do believe that will eventually happen, then go to the district, regional, state format with a 16 man bracket.

Now onto a thought that I think will help to improve wrestling in Kentucky that has not been mentioned, how about better school support!  It is simple.  The more support you get from your administration and AD, the better your chances of having a competitive and highly successful program.  In addition to this, middle school wrestling is key as well.  In Kentucky, 7th & 8th graders can compete at the high school level.  Not so in Indiana and why would they.  The amount of middle school interest, tournaments, etc. in Indiana is far greater than in Kentucky.  Get the kids interested and wrestling while they are young and support them throughout and you have a chance to be successful.

  15. As for Bennett wrestling Cosgrove last year, that's not true.  Bennett only wrestled an exhibition in the meet against Doss last year and that was against Cahill.  Cahill beat him convincingly.  As for Lile beating Badgett, who knows.  Badgett is good but not unbeatable.  I don't know one thing about Lile but I do know that one season wrestling in Indiana will definitely make you a lot better.  112 will be a tough weight class if the preseason rankings are correct (that means assuming all the wrestlers listed wrestle that weight class).  Finally for Dusty, always be humble.  That way if you do happen to lose, you don't look like an ass and if you do happen to win, people will talk for you and say how much you have improved and how good you are.

  16. I try to stay as informed and up-to-date as possible.  I don't always accomplish that however.  You just never know when a situation will arise and I do not want on of my guys suffering because I didn't know the rules or guidelines.  That wouldn't be fair to them considering the work and time they will put in.  Also, I figure in some instances if I know something the other guy doesn't then I have an advantage.  Any little edge I can get always helps!

  17. If the school board chooses to employ you as a teacher, aide, cook, janitor, etc. you are eligible to coach as long as you pass the certification test for the state of Kentucky and the NHSCA and meet all the other criteria set forth by the state and/or school district (I.E. 64 college hours, etc.).  They must pass this test before they can instruct kids in any way.  People who are not eligible can be volunteer assistants, but are not allowed to instruct kids  (I.E. manager, stat keeper, etc.)  In most instances, the school system prefers a head coach to be employed in the school system and not a paraprofessional.  Some of the "lesser" sports such as wrestling, tend to be exempt because school's have a hard enough time finding coaches in general.  Case in point, I'm the head coach at Doss and I work as a supervisor at UPS.  As for assistant coaches, most school's don't care if you are employed by the school system or a paraprofessional.  As long as you meet their criteria, which includes being certified and passing the background check, they will hire you.

  18. Under the same by-law a student who is completing the curiculum for a local schoo at home due to an "injury or medical reasons" are allowed to participate.  They have to be enrolled in at least 4 hours of instruction a day.  Kids who were expelled or are attending an "alternative" school are not eligible for participation.  As for admittance for the KHSAA, I guess students could apply and have their "school" become a member.  I don't what they would have to do in order to gain qualification for this however.  Definitely interesting.  They are required to complete a certain set of guidelines and test like all other students are required to do, but they are not part of the local board of education.  They are monitored by the state which tends to be more generalized than the local school board is believe it or not.  Funny how that happens.  An example of how the state is more generalized (and this does not pertain to students but is just something to prove it) is for coaches to be board certified, they must have at least 64 hours of college credit and have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.  I was coaching football in Bullitt County and one of our coaches was told by the school board that he did not meet the criteria.  He graduated from Centre and had a cumulative GPA of 2.4.  By the state's standards he was eligible, but the Bullitt Co. Board has a policy that all coaches must have 64 college hours and a cumulative GPA of 2.5.  The B.C. Board has a stricter policy.  The local boards of education must comply with KHSAA by-laws but can enforce more if they choose to.  Since all local boards are different, the KHSAA doesn't leave "home-schooled" situation up to the Local Boards and just says the kids are not eligibile.  At least this is my understanding.

  19. According to Bylaw 14-4 in the KHSAA compliance handbook, no student shall participate for a school unless enrolled for at least 4 instruction hours at that school (the school has to be a KHSAA member) or a feeder school under the same local board of education.  That basically means no home school students or students from another school who are not offered a sport at their current school can participate.
