  1. #1 fan, I'm not quite for sure what you are getting at.  Banks went the distance against Armstrong from Caldwell and Hitchings from Trinity at state last year so those were 2 full matches.  I know he wrestled more than 2 matches before state because he wrestled at least 2 matches at Regionals and he won the Five Star Classic at Lafayette so that is at least 5 matches.  As a matter of fact, his record entering state was listed at 28-1.  The year before I don't know what his record was but he went the distance in the quarterfinals and the semi-finals.  It sounds like he had plenty of matches last year & the year before.  Bottom line is he is a very good wrestler, but he just got beat by Courtney and Ervin.

  2. I'm pretty sure they will.  They were in the same situation last year with getting a coach late in the game and still pulled it off.  It really is a good tournament and probably the best early season tournament in the state.  Last year Woodford Co., North Hardin and Fern Creek were there and they finished 2nd, 3rd & 4th in the state, not to mention Evansville Reitz who won the tournament.  In addition Trinity and Eastern were also there.  Anyway, if Fairdale somehow doesn't pull it off, I'm sure one of the other Louisivlle schools will pick it up.  It is too good of a tournament to not have.

  4. People don't need to worry about Doss.  They will have a coach.  I know this because I was the assistant there last year and thought I would be unable to coach again this year due to having a 20 month old and a 3 month old at home.  I ran all the practices, made the schedule, etc.  However, I did put in for the job today and expect to get the position.  If someone else puts in for it, then that's great.  Good luck to them.  The school you guys need to worry is Valley, even though I know Mr. Raleigh will get a coach for them.  He is an excellent A.D. and I know he will put emphasis on wrestling because his 2 sons wrestled there.  What about some of the other South End Schools in Louisville.  Last I heard Iroquois and Fairdale were still looking for coaches as well.  Did they fill their positions?

  5. PRP will definitely represent Region 3 this year.  As for the other team, that will depend on the team seedings.  Right now, I would give the nod to Bullitt Central, but just barely over Meade County.  Meade County will improve considerably from last year, but B.C. still has quite a few quality wrestlers returning.  I think it will be enough to get them to the finals of the Region 3 duals and take the 2nd spot for region 3 at the state duals.

  6. If Nickel keeps going at the rate he is, he might be a HWY next year   Last year he was a light 215 (he weighed around 200-205).  This year he will be right at the 215 mark.  By the way, Nickel did pin Payne in the 1st period last year.  We bumped him up in a dual against Iroquois because we didn't have a HWY and they didn't have a 215.  As for no one beating James Payne, that is a real big stretch.  He improved a lot last year, but still has a ways to go, even in Region 3, to be "unbeatable".  Come on now!  The only 2 wrestlers in Region 3 who might be considered unbeatable by other Region 3 competition are Choate and Nickel.  Those 2 are it.  Good luck to all.  The season is almost officially here.

  7. I appreciate the info.  I think it is great that you have that much confidence in Kelly.  He is a good wrestler and I hope he recovers okay from his injury at state.  It will take a good match from him to beat Jones.  Don't forget, there is also Ryan Houchens out there who will most definitely make an impact on this weight class.  He is very capable of beating both.  As for Dials, he too is a good wrestler.  He is going to have to work hard to beat Nickel, Chaney and Green next year.  I think Nickel will be much improved again this year and he will be extremely tough to beat.  Good luck to you guys.

  8. I think Meade Co will definitely have a very good chance at making the top 3 in the Region and probably will.  They will have 1 or 2 champs (Ohmes and possibly Geary) and should have quite a few place in the top 4 at region.  I don't know about beating PRP, I think that is a stretch.  Bullitt Central will again have a good team.  They are the 2x defending regional champs and deserve some respect from our region.  You can't count out Southern and DeSales regardless of who they lost.  Coach Latsha and Coach Martin will have their teams ready to compete come regional time like always.  Doss could be tough.  They have some good wrestlers returning and a few good wrestlers who did not compete last year will join them.  A lot for Doss will depend on whether they will have a full lineup or not.  If they have a full lineup, then they could be very competitive, but then again that is the same for most teams.  Having a full lineup is 1/2 the battle.  Good luck to all this season.

  9. I think 2 per school per weight class is fine.  You won't have 325 kids in 1 bracket.  At lot of teams have problems fielding full varsity teams, let alone have 2 or more kids in a weight class on the J.V. level.  Sure some schools like Trinity, St. X, Woodford, Union, etc. may have 3 or 4 kids in 1 weight class, but if they take 2, it will help make up for other teams who have no J.V. wrestlers at all.  It will help make the brackets more full.  One issue, as I see it, that you may run into is with what size bracket will you use, 32 man or 16 man etc.  If you run a 32 man bracket, or more depending on how many wrestlers are in each weight class, then the tournament has to be over at least 2 days or the losers in the 1st round won't be able to compete completely in the consolation bracket.  7th will be the highest they can finish.  That would kind of stink for some kids.  If the tournament is over 2 days, how many schools would pay for overnight stays.  Also, what about seeding or will it be a random draw.  It would be hard to seed J.V. wrestlers.  Just some things to think about.  I love the idea though and really appreciate Coach Thomas stepping up to do this.

  10. For me, it was my high school coach Brett Reynolds.  When I was a freshman, he saw me walking the halls & asked if I would be interested in wrestling.  I said why not, how hard can it be .  He helped take me from a freshman who knew nothing about wresling & was just doing it to stay in shape for football to making state just 2 years later in Indiana.  Coach Reynolds wrestled at Indiana State during the early 80's.  He was teammates with Bruce Baumgartner there for 3 years and saw Bruce win the national championship in 82 or 83 (I can't remember the exact year, it may have been both).  He was very knowledgable about wrestling.  At the time, I knew all of this, but was clueless as to just how fortunate I was to be learning from someone like this.

  11. Yes, Hacker is going to PRP and yes, he is eligible to wrestle.  However, I was told he is not wrestling.  That's a shame.  He should, even if it is not for Doss.  He has a lot of potential and energy.  Maybe some of you guys over there can convince him to wrestle, but gatsby is right, I'm not for sure how long he will stay eligible.

  12. Dang, I must really be out of the loop.  I don't see Choate on here for PRP.  He is still wrestling, right?  I'm pretty sure Kendall Davidson is not wrestling this year.  I could be wrong and for Doss' sake I hope I am.  Even if he does, he won't be 103.  He will be either 112 or 119.  I talked to Maupin's dad and he will have a very difficult time wrestling 112.  He will probably be 119 or even 125.  Who is Turner from PRP?  I've never heard of him.  At HWT, I think Lawson from Doss will be there instead of B-bop, Just my opinion.  And finally, the rumor is that Hacker is going to PRP.  It probably is just a rumor, but it had to start somewhere.

  13. Maybe Courtney didn't care and maybe he did.  Who knows.  But if you are implying that he took this match lightly, even though it was in the summer, then that doesn't say much for his competitive streak.  I think Harrison is an extremely talented wrestler and deep down all wrestlers care about whether they win or loss and it does not matter if it is in the summer or in February.  I would say Courtney is no different.  I know this doesn't count on his physical record next year, but come on.  He lost.  Just leave it at that and don't make excuses that is all I am saying.  As for Hitchings having anything to prove, well that is up to him.  I would venture to say the only thing he had to prove was to himself, not to you or anyone else.

  14. Yeah, I 2nd that Ranger.  My wife is a teacher at a public school.  She applied for a job at a private school and was offered the position, but turned it down because it paid her $10K less than her current teaching position at the public school.

  15. All schools recruit regardless of whether they are private or public.  You can't just wait and hope for the good athletes to fall in your lap.  Some schools are better at it than others.  I guess it is just a question as to what people's perception of "illegal recruiting" is.  Now I know some people say the Catholic / Private schools "cheat", but I do not see it that way.  I know plenty of kids who don't live in their district and go to other public schools and I know it is not for "busing" purposes.  Case in point, & I will have to limit this to football because it is the examples I know, Tony Driver played for Louisville Male & later for Notre Dame and he lived in Ft. Knox.  Karry Pappas played for Trinity on a couple of their state championship teams with Brian Brohm and he lived in New Albany Indiana.  One of those schools is consider private and one, although traditional, is considered public.  I don't like the fact of hurting the kids with a year off for transfering school systems without physically moving, at least not the younger kids.  I could see this for kids who are sophomores or up, but you don't tend to see many kids go from public to private schools after their sophomore year.  It tends to be the other way around, so the public schools still get hurt a little.  However, there will be ways around this just like everything else.  Public schools who tend to place at least some emphasis on their athletics tend to still get good athletes just like the private schools do.  I can't blame a kid for wanting to get a good education and play athletics for a school who strongly supports their athletic program or programs and it does not matter to me whether that is at a public or private school.  There are plenty of good public schools who can compete with private schools.  Ask Trinity and St. X if they have an unfair advantage competing with Fern Creek, Eastern and Seneca year in and year out.
