  1. The Doss coach is Kevin Hare.  I was the assistant there last year and pretty much did all the coaching, scheduling, conditioning, practice planning, etc. so hopefully we won't lose too much ground on the other teams.  As for the rules meeting, I can't attend tonight.  I am attending the make-up on 10/11 in Lexington so I should be good to go there.  I am not sure who Valley hired, but I know BeBop said they have a coach.

  2. It is very possible for a wrestler to make it to the finals one year and not place the year before.  Last year alone D.C. Evans, John Thomas, Jaron Singley, Deon Chaney, Derek Nickel & Anthony Bailey were in the finals and didn't place the year before.  It can happen.

  3. Doss has a huge wrestling practice area.  It's about the size of 1/2 of a basketball court.  Wait a second, it is 1/2 of a basketball court.  We don't have a wrestling room.  We practice in the auxillary gym (Not the main gym or the small gym).  We share it with the cheerleading and dance team.  They get 1/2 and we get 1/2. :x  Anyway, on most Friday's after practice, we have to roll up the mats because a daycare or some other type of elementary school organization has to use the gym.  Now, try to keep the wrestlers' attention with you know what on the other side of the gym screaming, "Give me a D...".

  4. Fist of all, Beshaun you're making a fool of yourself so please stop.  This kid Antwon Fields is listed no where on the IHSAA site as being a state champion.  I could be wrong, but I don't even see him as a sectional champion.  Second, if he is in the 10th grade, there is no way he could be a 2x high school state champ.  Indiana does not allow junior high kids to compete on the junior varsity or varsity level in wrestling.  They can only compete on the Middle School Level.  That means 2 years ago when he was in the 8th grade, he couldn't compete for the varsity.  I think someone may have been feeding you a line of bullsh#t.

  5. Teams do what works best for them and I'm sure Coach Thomas believes this is the case with his workout program.  By the way, what they do not only works on strength, but also works muscle flexibility, which is key in wrestling.  I wouldn't put down another team's conditioning program, especially before the upcoming season.  You just give them more fuel for the fire.  Meadecowrestler, I believe you wrestle 171, is that correct?  Well if you have to see Ethan Dunn from Moore this year, we will see if this conditioning program worked for him! :-o  Good luck this year.

  6. Seneca will be very competitive again.  I am sure of that.  However, didn't they lose Fuller as well?  That means they lost wrestlers who finished 2nd @ 119 (Chiu), 3rd @ 125 (Fuller) & 4th @ 215 (Dockery).  They did gain Johnson this year and he will more than likely finish higher than 5th @ 103, but losing the previously mentioned wrestlers will be very hard to replace.  They may have their other guys pick up the slack and believe me, I've known Zach Poulton for a very long time.  His parents are family friends and I pull for him every time he wrestles (except against one of my wrestlers of course).  I would love nothing more than for him to win a state championship, but even under the best circumstances, which includes Poulton, Martin & Johnson winning individual state titles, I don't think they will gain enough points from the rest of their wrestlers to finish in the top 3.  It could happen, but it would be very hard.  I'm sure Chiu, Fuller & Dockery's replacements will do just fine, but I would wager they won't finish 2nd, 3rd & 4th in their respective weight classes.  I think Ranger has given them a lot of respect, but only time will tell how they do.  It's hard to give any team more respect than a top 10 state finish.  By the way, I don't think anyone does any more research than Ranger does on the current Kentucky wrestlers so that statement is both ill-advised and just plain senseless.

  7. I think Grappler hit the nail on the head about the facility being free.  Since wrestling is not a big revenue maker, the free facility is very appealing to the KHSAA.  Also, I honestly think the only other place you could move the tournament would be either Louisville or Lexington, but it would be difficult to get a venue like Freedom Hall or Rupp Arena at that time of the year with basketball season.  All the other places in those cities would be either equal to or smaller than Frankfort.  Owensboro would be a bad idea.  It would be closer for the western schools in the state, but a majority of the schools with wrestling are in the Louisville area and the eastern and northern part of the state.  A 2 day tournament would be nice and it would eliminate an extra night's hotel stay, but the cost of gas for driving that extra 2 1/2 or 3 hours both ways in a bus to Owensboro would almost negate that.  I know Frankfort is not as big as most people would like, but think of it this way, if we have more mats, then we need more refs at state.  Considering how unhappy some people are with the quality & quantity of officials our state has, imagine how happy they would be with the 2nd tier of officials! :|

  8. Alright, let's go ahead and tell everyone how it happened.  Nickel got a little foolish.  He was on top and decided to do a cross face tilt.  He was trying to work on it for some of his matches on down the road.  He decided to try to work it during a match since he had no one to try it on in practice.  He sunk it in, but put his own shoulders on the mat.  The ref slapped the mat, the wrestlers went to the center and the ref raised the Southern kids hand.  Derek was shocked.  Let just say, after a brief conversation with his coach, he learned to bring his hips out from under his opponent a little bit more while attempting this type of tilt after that match. :-)

  9. PRP does have a good team this year.  I don't know if they will have that many kids in the finals, but they are the early favorites to win Region 3.  Of course, there are a lot of things that could possibly change that.  Things like not knowing what weight classes people are going to wrestle, injuries, etc.  They have a lot of kids with varsity experience and that always helps.  If I am not mistaken, they return all of their wrestlers that made it to state last year.  That is always a good building block for success.

  10. Green never pinned Nickel.  Green won by 1 pt at the Horsepower last year and 2 pts. at the Dragon Invitational.  Those are the only 2 times they met.  Like I said, the matches were very close.  They could have gone either way.  I look forward to seeing the 2 wrestle again.  It will fun to watch.

  11. The rankings don't really matter.  If Jones goes 215, it will not be any easier for him than 189 is.  He can stay at 189 and have Houchens and Kelly as his main competition or go 215 and have Nickel, Chaney, Green and Dials.  Either way, a state title won't be easy for him, that I can guarantee.  As a matter of fact, if he does decide to go 215, he probably will be giving up about 15 lbs to most of his competition.

  12. Please remember, when I said I wrestled in the tournament my sophomore year, that doesn't mean my sophomore year was recent.  This was back in 1992-1993 wrestling season, St. Paris Graham was there and I am not quite sure if Jordan was at Graham H.S. at that time or not.  If he was, he hadn't been coaching there very long.

  13. I wrestled in the Mater Dei tournament my sophomore year.  It is no joke.  Usually there a quite a few Catholic schools there like Evansville Memorial and Indianapolis Cathedral from Indiana and Pope John Paul from Tennessee.  It is probably the best tournament in Indiana for the entire year.

  14. I know Doss doesn't have the recent tradition that some of the other schools do.  Those schools earned their respect and they do have mine.  However, I always tell my kids to wrestle the individual, not the singlet.  It is not what the singlet says on the outside that defines who you are, it is the heart and character you have inside that do!  I try to instill the same values in my wrestlers that my coach did in me.  At the end of the day, if my kids put their maximum effort into a match and walk off the mat knowing they gave it their all and didn't give up, I don't care what the final score is, to me they are a winner and they have earned my respect.  To me, and I truly me no disrespect to anyone, being from Woodford, Trinity, LaRue, Fern Creek, Union, etc. doesn't make you a good wrestler, just like being from Doss or any other less traditional school makes you a bad one.  Granted those schools have more than their fair share of good wrestlers and for good reasons.  They have dedicated kids who work hard and class act coaches who put their all into coaching, but there are other programs out there that do as well.  People need to realize that.  Derek Nickel has earned my respect and that of many others.  He is a winner on the mat and more importantly off the mat, which is what truly counts.  Good luck to all this year.

  15. Just one more thing I would like to add about Derek Nickel.  If he was from Union Co., Woodford Co., LaRue Co., Fern Creek, Trinity, etc., we wouldn't be having this conversation either.  However, because he is from the lowly Region 3 school Doss, he must be a "fluke", right?  Sorry to all of you who are true wrestling fans and respect this great sport, but I just have no tolerance for those who want to disrespect their opponents or this sport with rabble and trash talk.  Respect everyone, fear no one!  Having an opinion is one thing, but trash talking and acting like a fool is another.  To Armbar, why can't Nickel beat Dials, Green or Chaney again.  He has never wrestled Dials, he has wrestled Green twice and lost, but they were very close and could have gone either way (1 pt & 2 pts. were the scoring differences) and he has wrestled Chaney twice (a 1 pt. defeat and a 6 pt. victory).  Don't just say he can't or that you think he can't, back it up with some good reasons or legit points.

  16. Alright, it is time to come to the defense of my guy, Derek Nickel.  The only reason people think Nickel is a fluke is because he went from not placing the year before to being state champ.  Nickel is as talented as anyone at the 215 weight class and I would even say more talented than anyone in this weight class proven by his state championship.  You can't win a state championship and be a fluke.  He was always in every match against the best at 215.  At state, he did not give up an offensive point.  The only other one who can say that is Elliott Martin.  That's pretty impressive for a "fluke".  People said he would never beat Dockery and he did the week before regionals.  They said he wouldn't make it past Winter in the quarters last year and he dominated him.  They said he wouldn't beat Shipp in the semis because Shipp had just pinned who some people considered the favorite in the 215 weight class the round before, Adam Dials, but he won that one as well.  Finally, people said Deon would dominate him in the championship because Nickel just wasn't as good as Deon and well, anyone who saw that match or knows wrestling would say Nickel handled himself pretty well.  Nickel has a terrific work ethic and he has a lot of heart.  He never takes the easy route and always works his tail off.  I know because I get to see it every day.  Last year, Nickel had no one to push him in practice.  We didn't have a HWT or a 189.  Our 171 was a 1st year wrestler and out 1/2 of the year with an injury.  He worked every day pretty much by himself.  Can Chaney, Green or Dials say this?  I don't think so.  At least Chaney had Hardin, Green had Bullock and Dials had Kelly.  We finally got him some competition to wrestle the week before state and look what happened.  We do have some decent wrestlers in our upper weight classes for him to wrestle this year and I have a guy coming to work with him this year on a regular basis who was a state champ in Ohio and a scholarship wrestler for Ohio State.  He has improved two fold from last year and just keeps getting better every day.  People who come to wrestle Nickel this year better strap on their head gear extra tight, because they are going to be in a battle.  It is about time people start realizing Nickel is legit.  People better start saying when they come to wrestle Nickel they better be ready and not the other way around.  I'm not saying he can't be beat, because on a given day anyone can be.  I am saying however, that he is the favorite to repeat this year and I think he will.  I wrestled in Indiana and got the privilege to see some of the best that state had to offer in the 1990's.  I saw Pat Cassidy, a 3X state champ from Bloomington South, Andy Schneider, a 3X state champ from Mount Vernon, the Moldanodo brothers from East Chicago Central and the Levell brothers from Decatur Central of which all were state champs.  I know the talent level and work ethic it takes to be considered a legit wrestler and Nickel has it.  So please, keep giving Derek bulletin board material and some more external motivation.  He doesn't really need it because he is one of the most internally motivated people I know, but we enjoy it.  It just makes him look that much better when he wins.
