  1. I as well struggle to understand how people seem to not understand the difference between team duals and tournaments.  3 or 4 dominant wrestlers might not win you a lot of duals, but they will place you higher at tournaments than teams who might beat you in duals (i.e. the state tournament and subsequent individual placings which is from what Ranger bases his team rankings).

  2. I believe the official everyone is referring to is Phillip Baker.  It was his 1st match, not just his 1st tournament, but match.  He did have some questionable calls, but I am sure he was nervous and overall (minus about 4 or 5 calls) he did okay.  There were a couple of illegal slam calls against Ohmes in the finals, a pin call that he reversed because he called it with the kid's shoulders way far out of bounds and an escape call (or lack there of) with Northington from PRP and the kid from Caldwell.  Other than those calls he did fine.  Only the calls against Ohmes affected the outcome of the matches so they can mostly be overlooked.  I'm sure learning to be a good official takes time just like learning to be a good wrestler.

  3. As far as quick pins, Nickel was the only one with a 1st period pin in the finals and that was 20 sec.  Rob Noe definitely has improved and I am happy for that young man.  Just one thing, as far as region champ, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves yet.  I'm sure Ohmes will be better by the end of the year and Lewis from Doss is dropping to 119 (He weighed in at 123 and will wrestle 119 after Christmas).  Nice job on improving this year, but there is still a long road ahead.

  4. As far as how the tournament was ran, I've seen better, but I have also seen worse.  As for the wrestling, the top tier wrestlers really didn't get a work out too much.  For example, Nickel pinned through the tournament including a 20 second pin in the finals.  Don't get me wrong, there were some good matches like Justin Walls vs. William Northington in the semis, but overall there weren't very many.  However, it was a good tournament for the inexperienced wrestlers.  A lot of teams had holes in their line-ups so teams like Meade Co, PRP, B.C. & Southern who have JV wrestlers had the opportunity to get those guys some mat time, which is always good.  In all honesty, this tournament was nothing more than a preview of the Region 3 tournament the 2nd week in February.  There were a few teams missing, but most of the Region 3 teams were there with a few others mixed in like Nelson, Bourbon and Caldwell.  Of course there were a few key wrestler missing from some of the Region 3 teams and some of the kids were not at weight just yet, but this tournament was pretty much indicative of how the Region 3 tournament will end up.  Just my opinion.

  5. FYI, Green never pinned or tech pinned Nickel.  He won by 1 pt. at the Horsepower and by 2 pts. at the Dragon Invitational.  Both very close matches, so whoever said he pinned or tech pinned or pent (whatever the heck that is) Derek has either been misinformed or just a plain idiot.  Anyway, on to the topic, I give the edge to Jones in this one.  I think he would be a little too quick for Green.  Green is good, but I think Jones is just a little bit better.  Besides, Green's game is dependent on head control and Jones wouldn't let him have it.  Just my opinion.

  6. Alright, first off Nickel did wrestle against JH (Nick Knoll) & pinned him early in the 2nd period.  Second, Nickel weighed in at 214.6 (I have the weigh-in sheet to prove it), so I don't know who said he was overweight, but it simply isn't true.  Third, I understand the frustration of the JH fan, but come on, you had a great, highly-anticipated match-up between 2 of the top wrestlers in the state.  It is not often you get to watch two #1 ranked kids square off so I can see why the emphasis was placed on them.  It is not like you went on and on about other NH wrestlers.  Finally, Jones & Nickel are without a doubt excellent wrestlers, but IMO pound for pound the best wrestler there last night was Josh Johnson, no question.

  7. Alright, here is my take on the Lee vs. Haynes match as an unbiased bystander who did not see the match.  Lee may or may not have been stalling, but why was Haynes down in the scoring anyway?  Lee had to have been doing something at least early on in the match to have a scoring advantage.  If Haynes was ahead in the scoring or at least tied then the stalling becomes obsolete.  If he is ahead then Lee has to force the issue and stalling does not come into play.  I always tell my wrestlers if you go out and wrestle aggressive and get up in the score, then the other wrestler is forced to wrestle and not stall.  If he does choose to stall, who cares, you're up in the scoring and he is only hurting himself.  Again, this is just my take on the situation with no malice intended towards any wrestler or fan.  Hopefully the 2 will get to meet again and who knows, the outcome may be different the 2nd time around.

  8. It was a great match.  Neither wrestler really had an advantage in terms of strength or quickness.  Believe it or not, Jones was as strong as Nickel and Nickel was as quick as Jones.  They both wrestled fairly well, but Jones came out on top and he deserved the win.  Jones conducted himself very well after the match and was humble and gracious.  Derek made 2 very small minor mistakes that wouldn't have been noticable against a lesser opponent, but Jones took advantage both times.  The score was 4-3 with about 20 seconds remaining and Nickel tried for the desperation lateral.  He stepped too close to the underhook foot and not enough in between Jones' legs, Mark did a nice job of dropping his hips back and away.  Good counter by Jones and he slipped behind as they fell to the mat to get the final takedown and make the score 6-3.  Like I said, it was a very even match and if they were to wrestle again, you couldn't convince me it would be anything else than another toss up.  Congratulations Mark.

  9. The rule is 1.5% of your body weight per week so it will vary depending on your initial assessment weight.  For example a HWT can lose more per week than a 119 based on the 1.5%.  The rule was actually in place last year, but there were misunderstandings and confusion so there was some leniency.  However, this year with the program now being a year older, there isn't.

  10. Ballard's coach took the assistant job at Eastern.  As for Atherton, Gary Cole was their coach last year.  He is at Iroquois this year.  Atherton had either 2 or 3 kids.  Ballard didn't quite have a full line-up, but they had about 9 or 10 weight classes filled.  It is ashame for those kids, but what can you do if no one will step up and take those positions.  If I were a football coach at one of those schools, I would take the position and make it mandatory for a lot of my kids who don't play basketball to wrestle.

  11. Gatsby does the rankings based on the returning wrestlers who competed in regionals last year.  Since Payne did not wrestle at regionals due to injury that is why he does not have a ranking number.  Once the season starts and we begin wrestling each other, he will start to change the rankings and I'm sure Payne will move up.

  12. Same can be said for Ballard.  They don't have a coach and the outlook looks grim for them to have a program this year.  They have Howard Brim, who I believe Ranger has ranked in the state at 5th in either the 152 or 160 weight class, and he will not be able to wrestle.  It is a shame.  It does the sport no good to add 1 or 2 programs a year if you also lose 1 or 2 programs a year.
