  1. I think Mark Shumate does a great job.  You know he is in control of the match at all points, but yet he doesn't make the match about himself.  He is clear, quick and concise with his decisions and is very consistent.  What I like most about Shumate is that he talks to you like a human.  Anyway, there are some other good ones out there.  One, and I can't remember his last name off hand, is Rocky (somebody help me with the last name).  He reffed at the Lonesome this year.  He is another one who seems to always be in control of the match yet the spotlight is where it should be and that is on the kids.  A few young refs to watch for IMO are Sam Durbin and Tom Kusnir.  We have had them a couple of times this year and for 1st (Tom) and 2nd (Sam) year refs, they do a pretty good job.  They seem to very knowledgable of the rules and are what I think is the most important thing for a ref, consistent.

  2. In regards to JH 171 Aaron Newsome, he destroyed Moore (Dunn). Look out everyone in the top 5 spots at 171 this DAWG has Rabies watch out!!!!

Usually DAWGS with rabies get put down for good.  I think Mason Reid would be just the person to do it.  I wouldn't go running my mouth and calling people like Mason out or else the fierce DAWG may wind up looking like a French Poodle.

  3. For Trinity, Jordan Whiting, Josh Lewis and Brock Messina all play football so it will probably be at least a few days before they start wrestling.  We will get to see tonight.  On a side note, is Jordan Whiting wrestling and will he be HWT or 215?  No one seems to know if he is wrestling or not.

  4. I am not for sure when the pools will be determined.  Coach Founder is getting together line-ups from the participating teams' coaches now and will pair the pools up evenly based on the line-ups turned in to him.  I think he will also try to factor in which teams see each other multiple times in a year in order to get teams different competition.

  5. I'm sure gatsby is working on them.  It is still difficult to get rankings together with so many kids not down to weight just yet and so many kids trying to get to a weight they may not be able to make.  By the way, where was Ohmes last weekend?  I saw Stewart wrestling 119 for Meade.

  6. Believe me, I am taking nothing away from Alex Murphy.  For that matter, I am taking nothing away from the John Hardin light and middle weights.  I have seen them twice already this season and I am very impressed with them.  They are the best team we have seen so far this season and that includes North Hardin and Seneca.  Whatever Coach Lindsey is doing, it is working.  I just think the most dominant and outstanding performance belonged to Ricky Wright.  Derek would even tell you he didn't wrestle well and should have not received MOW & that is with 3 pins and a major decision.  Anyway, enough on this topic.  Next.

  7. Alright, if you are going by that criteria, then it should have been Ricky Wright.  He had an exceptional day.  He won the 145 weight class and pinned through the whole tournament in the 1st period.  Those 1st period pins included Billy Cahill who is ranked 9th at the 140 weight class and Kevin Porter who I believe is ranked in the top 8 at the 145 class.  That is why I voted for Ricky Wright and Derek is my guy.

  8. Chiba's power was no match for Derek's technique and that was proven by Derek's early 2nd period pin.  Chiba has improved tremendously and with a little better conditioning he will be tough.  It is not a stretch to say he is top 8 at the 215 weight class and in fact I think he is.  He does have a very good blast double, but needs to develop a little more than just a power game.  Other wrestlers at the Lonesome who impressed me were Alex Murphy (112 from John Hardin) & Ricky Wright (145 from Seneca).  They both looked very good for this early in the season.

  9. No, there is no more 1/2 your matches at your weight class rule.  My understanding is you have to make your scratch weight once by the weekend of state duals to be eligible to wrestle that weight class.  So for example, you can either make 125 before Christmas or 127 sometime after Christmas but it has to be done before state duals.

  10. Alright, since we are on the topic of weight descent plan, here is a question of which I can't seem to get an answer.  Let's say a wrestler's weight descent plan says he can weigh 140.25.  That means the minimum weight class he can wrestle for that day is 145.  I understand that, but if he weighs in at 139.8 his scale weight says 140.  I understand that.  Here is the question, weight descent plan says he can wrestle 145 which I also take as if he can wrestle one weight class up, he can also wrestle 152.  However, since the scale weight says 139.8, would he be considered to be wrestling 2 weight classes up if he goes 152 and therefore be ineligible to wrestle 152 for that day & only be able to wrestle 145?  Anyone with the answer and not a guess at what is right?

  11. You can't compete until you have your initial assessment and your name is listed on your school's alpha master report as such.  Sorry   Any school who allows an individual to compete without completing the initial assessment is subject to KHSAA penalties and sanctions.

  12. The stability in the Fairdale coaching staff and subsequent late hirings each year are the reasons I see for this tournament dropping off in stature.  Not that we are a top tier team, but for example, Doss wanted to come to the KOB, but in early October, Fairdale still did not have a coach.  Since we couldn't reach a coach to see if they were still planning of having the KOB, we tried to contact the AD.  After several failed attempts we settled on going to the Lonesome at Seneca.  I only say "settled" due to a lack of better words.  Seneca puts on a good tournament every year.  You have seen schools such as Trinity & Evansville Reitz drop out of the KOB this year and others will follow in years to come if the coaches start to feel this tournament is in jeopardy of not being held.  It is still a very competitive tournament, but teams simply don't want to be left out in the cold without tournaments on Saturdays so they seem to attend the ones they know will definitely be held the following year.  Case in point is the Mustang Classic at North Oldham.  This tournament seems to get better every year as Coach Fulk and his staff put on an excellent tournament.  It is always held the 1st weekend in February and the coaches can depend on that happening year in and year out.
