As a KCD alum and former team captain who watched the program thrive and then dwindle over a seven year period, I must say that I'm very disappointed with what's happened to the program in recent years. I think wrestling has become an increasingly minor part of the athletic culture at KCD and student recruitment for wrestling has always been overshadowed by basketball, football, and other sports. Additionally, in my experience with the athletes I knew from the classes of '02 through '13, I found that student-athletes at KCD tend to give lots of weight to their academic and other extracurricular pursuits - wrestling is just one part of the picture. I saw teammates who had to choose between state academic competitions and the regional wrestling tournament and others who had to balance tech-week rehearsals with wrestling practice. As Coach Shofner points out, KCD athletes generally don't make wrestling their top commitment and that's why KCD's program has never been as strong as other schools'. Personally, I believe that a good program requires a balance of extremely dedicated athletes and others who fit wrestling in along with other activities that contribute to their growth as young adults.

Thanks for the information! However, you said the tournaments would be folkstyle and the rulebook you linked to is for freestyle/GR wrestling. Where could I find a folkstyle rulebook so I can familiarize myself with all the technicalities?

Just to be clear, we don't have to send the $25 dues fee with the application? Also, after we send the application, will we receive the complete rulebook? Finally, do you have a schedule for summer tournaments?

stand-up makes a valid point. I think there's something to be said for schools where wrestling is a top-priority sport. Where I wrestled (it's so weird putting that extra 'd' now), like stand-up, we never had more than a few fans and the team numbered in the single digits. I grew so much with my small school's even smaller wrestling program and I wouldn't trade all that I learned and experienced for the world, but clearly I would have done better to have had a larger team with a more committed membership, where wrestling was a bigger deal (a function of the school). This is indeed something that a school like WC dominates in.

Coach... I hate to do this to ya, but 0.05% is in fact 5 out of 10,000. The percent symbol means "out of 100" and the 0.05 means "5 out of 100," so put together it is 5 out of 10,000. What you meant was 5% = 5 out of 100. I normally wouldn't provide this translation because I usually know what you mean even if you say the wrong words, but others might not :-D

I thought this tournament was run very well this year and it moved very quickly. Congrats to Eastern for executing it so well! My favorite moment was Cataan tripping backwards over Dan Smith... :-D
