New high school rankings are out

I was disappointed that Anthony Bailey wasn't mentioned with the heavy weights. He has amazing speed and strength for a big guy, what a fun kid to watch.
  7. If go back four years in time and look at Fern Creek's Middle School team, you would have believed that this years High School team would have been unstoppable. Members of the 2003-04 Fern Creek Middle School team included Tommy Warren, Josh Burkett, Grant Ohlman, Trent Kelley, Josh Lewis, Ben Barger, Jarman McNiel, John Wolsiefer, Deon Chaney, Eddie Lee, Antoine Lee, Curtis Gages, Myron Bradbury, Erin MaCauley, Brad Hitchings, Brent Hitchings, Tyler Ford, Derrick Branch and other talented wrestlers. This list includes seven Middle School State Champs (some of them multiple champs) and many runner ups and placers. If you were to fill in this past seasons Fern Creek line-up with the kids from the past middle school team, this is what it could have looked like: 103 - Myron Bradbury 112 - Daniel Wexler 119 - Tommy Warren 125 - Josh Burkett 130 - Grant Ohlman 135 - Derrick Branch 140 - Tyler Ford 145 - Ben Barger 152 - Cody Mann 160 - John Wolsiefer 171 - Brad Hitchins 189 - Kyle Hardin 215 - Deon Chaney Hwt - Eddie Lee This Team could have won state with possibly 11 or 12 kids placing. So What happened???? 103 - Myron Bradbury -- Wrestles for Trinity, placed 3rd 112 - Daniel Wexler -- Fern Creek, placed 6th 119 - Tommy Warren -- Quit 125 - Josh Burkett -- Quit 130 - Grant Ohlman -- Wrestles for Trinity, placed 5th 135 - Derick Branch -- Fern Creek, placed 5th 140 - Tyler Ford -- Wrestles for Manual 145 - Ben Barger -- Quit 152 - Cody Mann -- Fern Creek, placed 8th 160 - John Wolsiefer -- Quit ( Sad, Sad, Sad) 171 - Brad Hitchins -- Wrestles for Trinity, placed second 198 - Kyle Hardin -- Fern Creek, Did Not Place 215 - Deon Chaney -- Quit 285 - Eddie Lee -- ? Oh what a great team this would have been if they would have stuck together...

    Woodford County

After everything is said and done I can't help but envy the Woodford County wrestling program. Who wouldn't want to wrestle at Woodford, the best coaches, best facilities and best community support. I know that if I had it all over to do again, thats where I would choose to go. Wrestling isn't just another sport that short kids do in the winter at Woodford, it's a way of life. Nowhere else in the state will you find the type of passion and dedication to the sport of wrestling like that of Woodford Co. The rest of us watch and ridicule when a Woodford Co. kid struggles with his emotions after a loss, but I think winning means more to them. Every kid on that team believes that he should be able to bring home a state title like the many wrestlers before him. Winning is what Woodford does, they train to win, they drill to win and they expect to win. While most teams struggle to fill their line-ups, Woodford Co. dominates year after year. In what was considered to be a down year, Woodford still put 4 kids in the finals. That is the type of program that I wish everyone had the opportunity to participate in, especially me.

    Woodford County

I hate seeing the direction this thread has taken. My original post was meant to pay tribute to what I believe is the best wrestling program in this state. Some may disagree, but it's hard to argue with the numbers. I meant no disrespect to any other programs or that of my own. I just wanted to express that while sitting in the stands at the state tournament, I found my self thinking about how different my wrestling career might have been if I could have wrestled at a school like Woodford Co. Having Coached for a few years now, I have had the pleasure of talking with both Coaches Parks and Carr, both of whom I have grown to have the highest amount of respect and admiration. I know that there is a lot of animosity towards Woodford Co. out there, I'm not exactly sure why, but it was not my intention to stir the pot. I wish everyone could wrestler at a school with outstanding coaches, huge well equipped wrestling rooms, Supportive administration and a extremely loud and loyal fan base. Since thats wasn't the atmosphere I wrestled in, or now coach in, all I can do is keeping working day by day to bring my program up to the level that will fulfill the potential of all my wrestlers.
  12. I meant to say that these Schools don't exist anymore.

    Line-Ups

I truly hate to hear that Doss is dropping their program, this is heartbreaking. When I grew up in PRP, Doss was a very competitive team that always took 5 or 6 kids to state(back when getting to state meant something). The Administration at Doss needs to be publicly denounced for it's lack of support and sabotage of their wrestling program. Truly a shame!

    Woodford County

I glad for you that you feel that strongly about your team, coach and school, but many of us wrestled and do wrestle at schools where no cares about wrestling. Where I went to HS in Tennessee, football was everything, and yes I was Captain of the football team. We had 10.000 people in the stands for every home football game (this was before video games, cable TV and the internet), we had the best coaches, equipment and support; little kids would stop us in the mall to ask for our autographs. Wrestling was different, we had a coach that never wrestled before, we had to pay for our equipment and only 20 people ever showed up to watch us wrestle. Trust me, the guys on my team would understand how I feel, they knew how much I loved wrestling and they too would have liked to have wrestled at a school that valued wrestling like the way my school valued football. As a coach, I won't feel disrespected if I heard one of my kid say he would rather be at Woodford. Some athletes want to be challenged, they want to be given all the tools necessary to succeed, in those situations winning is expected and some athletes like that pressure to win.

    old vs now

I believe that the wrestlers today are technically better and more intelligent than wrestlers of the past. However, old school wrestling was much more brutal, the state tournament was often decided by who could survive the season with the fewest injuries. Matches weren't stop for trickles of blood and I don't remember hardly any potentionally dangerous calls. It was accepted that it was potentionally dangerous to walk on the mat. Everyone on my team dropped 20 pounds in three weeks, we would run for hours after practice in rubber suits to maintain our weight. Every school had a full line-up, there were no forfeits. At my weight class (145) we had three guys that I had to wrestle-off every Monday, reguardless of what tournament I had won that weekend. There were fights on the mat, fights in the stands and fights in the parking lots. We were warriors back then, winning was everything and losing was a strike against you manhood. I don't know if things are better today than yesterday, but I know that the guys I wrestled with were some tough hardnosed SOB's. What we lacked in talent and technique, we made up for with grit and determination.

    Aaron Carr -- Win Record

What is the status of Carr's win record? Has he already beaten the National win record, I remember that it was an achievable goal at the beginning of the season.
  22. Ranger, How are things going in your preparation of the final 2007-08 rankings? Just wanted to take a minute and say thanks for all your hard work. Even if we don't always agree with your assessments, I'm sure that everyone who uses this forum appreciates the invaluable service that you provide. Thanks again for another year of Ranger Rankings.
