    Region 5 - Very Pre-Season (3/13/09)

I agree, thanks for the support. he's a hard not to like the kid. I'm glad he's made friends with the kids over at Eastern, I know he's happy to have some workout partners this spring and summer.

Good luck with that. They can dedicate a new area to the wrestling team but there will never be any wrestlers dedicated to the new area. The conversion of the wrestling room is a demonstration of how the school views the direction of the program (In the crapper). I was once optimistic myself.

    KCD WRESTLING

I'm sorry to announce that KCD will no longer continue its wrestling program. I understand that this is not a huge loss to Kentucky Wrestling, however it is a personal loss to me and the handful of fine young men who had in past years worked very hard to be competitive wrestlers. This was not a decision made by the school but rather the unfortunate result caused by the lack of interest demonstrated by the KCD students themselves. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to motivate enough student athletes at KCD to sign-up, participate and endure the most demanding of high school sports. By the end of this years season we were down to just two wrestlers, with only one of those coming to practice regularly. The program could not survive with just one highly motivated athlete. I am grateful to everyone who continually extended their hands in friendship these past seven years. Thanks to all the coaches for always looking out for me and my team, making sure we were invited to various meets and tournaments. Thanks to everyone in region 5 who have always been so kind and encouraging to me and my boys. Thanks to all the fine young men at KCD who worked hard, bled, sweat and laughed with me for seven years, it was an honor. And most of all, I would like to thank the best of the best, the last man standing at KCD, - Hardy Hendren -. Chris Shofner

Hendren practiced this week and is wrestling in a tournament this weekend. He will train everyday from this one until the beginning of the season, the kid never stops he is a machine. He gets better and stronger everyday, it's going to be tough for anyone to keep up with pace of improvement.

Hendren wins the region at which ever weight he wrestles next year.

    College Signings

Congratulations Ryan, You have carried yourself with outstanding character and dignity. I along with many others in Region 5 and around the state are very proud of your wrestling and academic success. Wrestlers cannot define themselves by the number of state titles they did or did not win, but rather the many outstanding accomplishments they accumulate over the length of their careers. And if you look at your wrestling career as a whole, you have had one hell of an outstanding wrestling career. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and I have enjoyed or many conversations. Keep hitting the books because end the end it will be your education that will ensure your future. Best of luck, Chris Shofner - KCD

    STATE TOURNEY RESULTS

Lampe looked great in his first match. One of the best Sophomores in the state, in my opinion. Honeycutt also won his first match.

    underrated

125 St. X Kyle Honeycutt: Won region 4 without anyone scoring a point on him until he let Gilispe go with :20 left in the finals. The kid dominates his region and is ranked 12th. He will place, no doubt in my mind.

    Good Early Match-ups at State

145 First Round Bollman ________ |___________ Wright_________| Winner will get to wrestle Dust Brown, that's a tough way to start the tournament.

    REGION 5

Come on people were talking about two young men here, two great high school wrestlers. It's not constructive to wish ill will on any kid, we have all made mistakes and poor decisions. As a fan of both these young men, I hope they meet in the finals and wrestle one of the best matches of the day.

    125

I believe Palmer will get a good match from Honeycutt in the quarters.

    REGION 5

I agree, Davis lost his composure and slugged Thompson twice with two very aggressive and very intentional cross-faces. If I was referring I would have DQ'd him for unsportsmanlike like conduct. However that didn't happen and Thompson's choice not to continue leaves me with some questions. Thompson is a very tough kid and I find it hard to believe that he couldn't weather two shots to the head. Because I'm such a big fan of both young men I guess I'm a little disappointed with both wrestlers, Davis for losing his cool and Thompson for not manning up and finishing the match. As far as my observation point, I was close enough to hear both pops.

what refs to want at region and state

I think we all agree that Barnett is the best ref, Unless you like to stall then he's going to make you wrestle. I also like Mark Shumate and Rocky. Both the Shaw brothers do a good job. Joe Fattann sucks!!! He's gotten to fat to get down on the mat to call back points. Fattan has it in his head that we gather in the gym each Saturday to watch the Joe Fattan show, stay home fat Joe we won't miss you.

    Region 5 Rankings - 12/15/08

Golf is not a sport, it's a recreation. My 78 year old Grandmother plays golf three times a week but can't climb a flight of stairs. How can golf be called a sport when most of the participants, even at the pro level, lack the physical ability to get through 10 minutes of a wrestling practice. I hate golf, maybe the fact that my Daughter's boyfriend is a golfer has something to do with it.
  24. You guys take these rankings way to personal. They are just a best guess estimate made by Ranger who can't possibly keep track of every meet, match or dual that takes places. The rankings are best used as a good barometer of the competition taking place. There is also a week to two week lag in the rankings compared to real time, this happens because match reports trickle in at a very slow pace. By the end the the season Ranger usually has things dead on. Be patient and don't take the rankings to personal.

    Region 5 Rankings 12/9/08

Diar Shirapov 152 for J-town pinned Hendren of KCD to win the Lonesome. Both wrestles looked good Saturday. Hendren upset Pepper from Seneca to make into the finals. Shirapov and Thompson will make for a good finals match in Region 5. Hendren is dropping to 145.
