  1. I for one never saw the any publications of this rule.  I also never just peruse the KHSAA website or NFHS website.  Never once was it mentioned to anyone on our team from officials or such about it either.

regardless of this.  The rule is simply to speed up wrestling not a safety issue. And when you have a school like ours who complain when we just want regular head gear (which we don't have a pair for every kid even now) its hard to ask for something that was not needed.

If other state agencies have realized that the equipment is close to impossible to obtain ei. OHIO, and postponed the rule change until an adequate supply is available, why can't KHSAA do the same?

We have cut holes in the covering when in KY events, but have been told it will not pass after Christmas.

It's not like the few we have that need it are outstanding wrestlers or anything of the sort.  We just want them to be able to compete even if it is 2 and out.  We want to keep these kids wrestling and we would lose these kids if they are unable to compete.

  2. Is anyone else having a problem getting a headgear that has the hair cover attached?

It seems that Klif Keen is the only supplier of this item and they are sold out for the year.

I know that Ohio has removed this rule because of the unavailability to get the needed equipment.

I have between 2-3 high school wrestlers and numerous middle school wrestlers that need this, and I am unable to obtain even one.

    Can anyone help me here.

  3. Yes it is a great way for the coaches to get together before the season and get the ball rolling before the practices begin.

I'm not sure about the rest of the coaches out there but $200 is about 20% of our assistant coaches salary and about 11% of our head coaches salary.

Head coach gets about $1,800 Assistant and Middle school coach about $1,000 each.  Then one with no salary at all. That's almost enough to pay for our expenses throughout the season.

  4. I would just like for them to help with the cost.  After food and lodging and gas to and fro its more like $200+.

I think whole coaching staffs should attend not just one.  It's to much to for one person to soak up.

Heck if they can send 15 football coaches and 10 basketball coaches to there respective clinics I would think they could spring for 3-4 coaches to attend the wrestling clinic.

  5. I would think that ranger ranking some of the CC kids lower is kind of like a dad/mom who is coaching their sons/daughters teams.  You usualy vote against your own more that you vote for them, so that people don't think you are playing favoritism.

I'm not saying its the right way to do things just the way it is.  Look at some of the officials when they officiate against their alma mater some of them never get the questionable calls because of fear of favoritism.

Overall it doesn't really matter we will find out come Feb. who is on top and who is next in line.

  6. I could take some of the poor kids with desire and work with them for a week and give them tools that would launch them far ahead of many who have far more advantages than them

Thats the easy part.  Getting those kids to the point where they have the desire is the hard part.

I don't believe we are saying different things here. As coaches if your not possitive toward your athletes then you should not be coaching.

Are there exceptions to the rule of course there are.  And those exceptions are usually the best of the best.  When  you have a kid for 6 months a year for  an average of 3 hours a day teaching desire is very difficult.  Can it be done?  Of coarse it can.  Can it be done with every kid?  No.  But you try and try and try again to instill that desire and positive attitude.  You make goals. If that goal is reached then you make a higher goal.

I know what you mean by setting to low a goal.  When asked what my goal was as a 2nd year wrestler I said "to be a state champion, and I would be satisfied with nothing less than placing top 6 in the state. (They only placed top 6 in my day).  I was told by a newpaper reporter who was interviewing the team. "thats probably to high of a goal why don't I put you want to qualify for state".  Being 14 years old I said "I know I'm going to state, but you can put that down if you want".  I lost in the semi's and placed 4th that year, and when I next saw the reporter said I told you that was not a high enough goal.  But that was me and I have always been hard headed and extremely competitive.  I never reached my goal but I know that I pushed myself to try and accomplish it.  As a coach you try to get that same fire in your wrestlers.

Dutch your comment about surrounding yourself with people with the same desire is exactly the point I was trying to make when I said the bigger programs (not schools) have an advantage.  When you have a handfull of kids on your team and 1 or 2 of those 10 have a real desire then its hard to keep those with the fire in thier belly fueled.  But if you have 30 kids in the room and 25 of them have the fire then it is easy to fuel that fire.

I tried just keeping those only with the fire on the team.  That mean you only have 2-4 kids in the room.  Not only is that not good for the kids but it also does not help the program, the school fights every day to end the program.  I believe that if 1 kid wants to wrestle then you give that kid the opportunity, but schools don't always look at it like that.  In the past we had an AD with the same belief now there is a new AD and he just looks an numbers.

I didn't make the initial comment to make excusses.  I made it to thank those who help the kids who try hard but don't always succeed on the big stage for whatever reason it may be.  Many people don't realize that when someone from another team just acknoledges a kid who is trying, goes a long long way with that kid.  It shows them that their hard work has not gone un-noticed by those outside his team.  He takes that back with him and helps fuel the fire and in many cases pushes that kid to be more successful.

  7. anyone can if they want it bad enough .

That hits the nail on the head.  If you want it bad enough.

Where does that mentality come from?  Very few have that attitude by themselves.  It was tought to them by thier parent/guardian.  When sports or at least the sport of wrestling is far far down that list of importance it is hard to get those individuals to "want it bad enough".  It makes it even harder when that parent/guardian does not attend or even want that individual to wrestle.  How many kids do you see that are successful that do NOT have their parents/guardian or even a sibling attend every meet or at least the majority of them?  Heck I've seen more than my share of wrestlers that NEVER had thier parents see them wrestle.

My point and I think Wtbgg's is that success does not have to be guaged just by being the best or one of the best. It can be guaged by other accomplishments as well.  It's not a defeatist attitude when you celebrate a kid just qualifying for the state touney or making it thier goal.

Not everyone has supporters like yourself that give up so much to see their kids succeed in a sport.  That is the true makup of a great program is getting parents involved and supporting the team or at least their own kids.

Once again thanks to all that open up and allow some of those kids with less support into your supporting world.  Even a little bit of support for many of those kids go a long way.

  8. Also, many students that attend these bigger schools have the parietal support and $ to travel to camps and off season tournaments such as Fargo. That support goes along way when it comes to improving in the off season. Each year the cost goes up which hinders the development of less privileged kids.

    This is very true Wtbgg

However that does not mean that you give up.  Those of us in those less privileged schools have to work harder to get those kids and PARENTS interested in wrestling and find ways to get them to camps, summer tourneys and such.

I've been on both sides of the coin.  16 years in a big school and 13 years in the less privileged school.  The big difference is the parent support and the Comorodory (sp) (to lazy to look up the correct spelling) of the parents and kids.  In the big schools/programs you work for a good season every year.  In the small school/programs you work for a good season every 3 or 4 years.  You focus more on the individual accomplishments than on the team itself.

Seeing a kid go from 0-20 because he started his freshman year and was thrown into a varsity lineup to seeing that same individual win 20+ matches and qualifying for state a couple of years later is as great a feeling as seeing a kid you have had for 6+ years win a state title.

The one great thing I have found out (at least here in Nky) is that the coaches and supporters of other teams help out when they can for us smaller programs.  Many of my kids have received free or lower costs to camps, tourneys and the such.  It proves that wrestling is a family no matter what school you are from.  Throwing a little respect to some of those less privileged kids go a long way.  Many of them have few people who show them the attention or respect that many of the others get.

Thanks to all that take a little time to help or acknowledge the little guys out there trying there best.

  9.

Everyone needs to support the coaches association, there is no excuse worthy of arguing.  By not supporting them it is setting Kentucky back in many ways.  I am grateful for people that have the best interest of Kentucky in mind, that is what the Coaches Association is for.

I am all for supporting the coaches association.  How are the coaches contacted?  What is the cost?

I'm not the head coach anymore, but would still like to be part of the association.  If we are contacted trough the school, I will never get the info.  Nor will they help out with the membership dues.  Does only one coach need to be part of the association to have their kids eligible?

  10. Yeah well welcome to basketball friendly Campbell Co. High School.

When we were state runner ups in 83 not only were we not recognized but they would not allow a banner to be put up in the gym.  Even though there was one there for the Girs basketball team that won region and lost thier first game in the state tourney.  My parents and other wrestling parents fought the boosters to get us jackets for winning region and being runner up. Heck most students and teachers  didn't even know we had a wrestling team.

Then in 90 when we won state there was very little recognision again.  It took the second title in 91 and many complianing from the coaches and parents before we  got a banner up.  Not to mention the individual state titles that were being won by the wrestling team.

  11. I believe that mitch Ervin and Derek scott should be in the conversation. mitch was the champ in john wolsifers weight 160 there senior years. a great match that never happened.  but both mitch and Derek were so dominate there last couple years.

Mitch was dominate his sr. year but his Jr. year was not a walk in the park for him.  especially at the state tourney.   He barely won his quarter finals match 10-9 (another 3 seconds and he would have lost) and won by 2 in the finals.

Wish he could have competed past high school.  Medical reasons kept him out.

  12. Dumb question: What coach doesn't allow assistant coaches to coach when they have more than one  wrestler on the mat?

    As one who knows from experience;

There were many years in which I was the only coach on the team.   It makes it difficult to be on two mats at once.  (I believe Scott in NKy only has one coach).  What Ky needs to do is what I have seen in Ohio.  The referee makes sure there is a coach in the corner before they start each match.

Overall;  Great to see the wrestling community come together.  This site was probably the main contributer to this.  I know many would not have known about this if not for this site.  (I for one would not hav known.)  Great to see that we were able to teach our wrestlers/kids how to get something done in a civilized way.  Using the correct avenues to get an injustice done.  Just one more reason why wrestling is such a great sport.  We were able to take a bad situation and get it changed.

  13.      You make those tourneys special tourneys then you are opening another can of worms.  Why should those programs get the prfits of a big tourney and not other programs. Do you ask the non-ky teams to not attend these tourneys anymore since they are not part of the state?

Then what happens when that schools drops their program?   For years in KY we had the high school state tournament held at a high school that did not even have a wrestling program.  Up till the mid 90's i believe.  All this for the sake of seeding the state tourney?  What happens when Ryle schedules the Dragon and then they are not allowed to attend because they had snow, or one of their studs is hurt on that tourney day, or sick, or does not make weight?  Or just has a bad day?

Then what happens on those days when these tourneys are held?   Look at last weekend.  If you are not a team in the state duals, you have an exceptionally hard time finding a tournament to attend.  Do we need to do this on 3 or 4 other dates during the year?

  14. takedownmachine;

If we do it your way.  Seed everyone regardless of if they win a region or not. Why have a regional tournament?

You would then have to require teams wrestling at certain tournaments or something like that.  We have numerous teams that don't compete in KY for most of thier season.  Should they be forced to participate more in KY?

If so then that causes for more travel for many teams like those in NKY.  Once you leave NKY the nearest teams or tournaments are an hour or two away.  Whereas if they cross the river into Ind. or Ohio its only a 1/2 hour trip, and more competitive wrestling.

If you seed you should only seed the regional champs.  And I think the only criteria you use is like Tenn.  Returning placers in the state tourney last year, then draw the rest.

  15. Yes we in KY still do it the same way the only problem is that there is only 1 tourney before the state tourney and you have 8 champions. That means that if all the number 1's win there will be a match up of number 1's in the quarter finals.

This is where some people have a problem.  If the supposed two best wrestlers are in the same quarter bracket they meet in the quarter finals instead of the semi's or finals.

I personally don't care about when the best two meet, as long as they meet.
