  1. We will usually make between $100-$200 an event, from door and entry fees (I try to keep the fees low so teams don't go broke, just enough to cover the officials fees, not the scorers fees)

But not sure its worth the hassle of borrowing mats from other teams and losing 2 days of practice for this.

I know these are excusses but holding more than one of these a year can/is a hassle.

If you expect the large border schools to hold all the tourneys they will not be able to. It's a huge stress on the coaches, wrestlers, and mostly the parents, because they are the one working the tables, the hospitality room and driving the mats back to and from the school.

Once again I know it will help my program when I can reduce cost by traveling across the river with little or no cost for travel, and not having to stress the school for the gym. It will also help keep kids out.

If we were in Lou/Lex area I know it would be less stressful because of the number of schools within 1 hour of each other.

I can't imagine how much extra travel the Western Ky schools would have if they were forced to wrestle 90% in state.

  2. 1 Some schools don't host tournaments because they can't coordinate for the Gym until the Basketball schedule is complete.

2 Concessions is all profit minus expenses.

3 Gate pays for referee and the rest goes back to the school' date= it doesn't go to the wrestling account. At least it's that way at our school.

4 One year you can have a date and the next year you can't. Its hard to get schools to contiune to support your event when its evey other year or the dates change and they are already scheduled for another tournament.

    1. We have a hard enough time getting the gym for the regional tourney when it is our turn.

    2. Concessions go to the general fund at our school

    3. This is where we get our profit, after it pays for officials, medals, custodians, and any other expenses that was caused.

    4. We are not guaranteed a date year in year out either.

  3. No' date=' border schools cannot. If you tell me that driving a bus from Campbell Co to Lexington, Louisville, or further is cheaper than driving 15 mins to Cincy ... there's no way. The same goes for Western Ky. To say its just as easy in light of that is just not true. If you're from Louisville, where there are multiple good tourneys, of course you can say its easy to stay in state even though you're a border team. But when you live over 100 miles away .. then you're not keeping everyone on the same playing field.

    1. Cost of gas, in a bus thats significant.

    2. We have to get up WAY earlier than you guys for weigh ins.

On point 2, yeah, stay in a hotel. But then that goes back into the cost factor.[/quote']

    Great points Grapplin:

This is one of the reasons we cannont keep kids on the team. Having to leave every Sat. at 6.00 A.M and returning home at 10-12 at nigth every weekend keeps kids away from the team. 4 hour round trip bus trips are brutal.

We have been trying to find tourneys across the river (Ohio) so that we can leave at 7 and get home at 8 or earlier, with only a 1 hour round trip bus trip.

We travel to Lou/Lex regions 6 or 7 times a year if not more. I dream for the day our team only has to do this maybe 2 or 3 times a year with the rest of the season in Ohio. This is not for the competition but for the cost and time.

  4. No offense taken Ranger;

It is one of my pet peeves also. I find its the haves and have nots with little or no middle ground.

There are about 10 coaches that pretty much run the system, not just because they force there way (even though some do), its becuase the other coaches allow them to.

The biggest problem we have with the Coaches Asoc. is that there are not enough big teams in Ky. I would guess that there are only about 15-25 teams that have more than 20 wrestlers on their entire high school team. There are also about 15-20 teams that probably have around 10 wrestlers on their high school team.

These teams also change coaches to often.

As for what has the coaches Assoc. done. They maintain the State Duals tourney. They also maintain the Small School State Team title.

Mr. Coomes and Mr. Fiser have worked their tails of to try and get more coaches involved, but I think most of these coaches have a hard enough time trying to maintain their own team, with little support to try and help get something done on the state level.

It's a catch 22. Do everything you can to save/keep a team or try and imporve Ky as a state.

  5. Scott Cooper won it in 2003 after an outstanding performance beating Luke Metzker in the finals.

Also' date=' Josh Stepp won it in 1998 after being considered not the #1 pick but having an outstanding turnout at the state tournament pinning most of his opponents.[/quote']

There are examples for both casses.

1990 (Migliachio) winning because he deffeated/upset Ennells (I believed Mig. was the better wrestler anyway),instead of Zinga who was probably the most dominant that year and tourney.

1991 (Cassleman) winning because he upset Burtleson instead of many other deserving that year (Martz<Kenper<B. Selke)

This is why it is a debate, most believe (more than 50%), its the tourney but a good deal of coaches believe it is also the (Mr. Wrestling)

  6. Isnt the award the

KHSAA State Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler?

Just like any other tournament MOW based on the performance at the event.

If an award were based on career or the season it should probaly be like the "Mr. Basketball" or "Mr. Football" awards based on overall achievement.

How about a the "Kentucky Wrestler of the Year" award or something like that?

Better yet' date=' The KentuckyWrestling.com, Wrestler of the Year Award![/quote']

I know of many coaches that considet this "MOW" award the "Mr Wrestling", (Myself included) This is why many of the 3 time champions earn the award thier Sr. year if they have not already won it.

Ex. Knable his senior year. Not the most dominant at the tourney, but was 4 time state champion., Bruce Stepp finally won it his senior year because of being a 3 time champ.

  7. Ryan Dillon would be the best wrestler in the N. Ky region if:

    1) he had even the slightest bit of dedication in the off season. he has never been to an off season tournament or camp.

    2) he could stay off his back.

His technique is awesome' date=' he just can't keep from getting pinned.[/quote']

The same could be said about Golsby.

He has learned to stay of his back but.

    1. He does almost nothing in the off-season. (No weights, 2 tourneys in 5 years (Border Wars)). He also has not attended any wrestling camps.

    2. If he hit the weight room and was dedicated outside the wrestling room during the season. (weight management, conditioning on own, working on technique at home).

  8. Dragon great idea about getting everone to go to a camp. However what about a team that has less than 10 members on the team. And almost non of them want to do anything during the off season.

    They always have an excuse.

I don't have a ride. I don't have the time. I don't have the money. I've got to go here and there. ect. ect. ect.

  9. I would have to say from a coaching aspect that I don't particularly like the rankings. Most of the top wrestlers may not be affected by the rankings but many of the others get obsessed with the rankings.

All they worry about is the rankings and where they are ranked or why they are not ranked. They focus so much time on this that they don't do what they need to mentally to improve themselves.

From a fan aspect I think it may be the greatest thing. Parents love to see their kids name in print, and recieve some recognision.

I'm not sure about the wrestler's aspect. We did not have rankings when I wrestled we just went out there and wrestled whoever was on the mat with us. Many times after the match the coach or someone from another team would say "hey you just beat the kid who placed 3rd last year at state". We would say really whats his name, then forget his name next week.

You know what they say Ignorace is bliss, I was very blissful during my high school career.
