Any one else get robed @Fern Creek this weekend?

385 if you don't think that cost is an issue for many kids I think you are wrong. Maybe not the $15-$30 for tourney entry, but travel and food costs also add into it. I'm not talking about those wrestling families that sacrifice all so that little johnny can wrestle. I'm talking about kids who have no support from home and have little income in the first place. There are a lot more than you think out there in this situation. Wrestling is expensive and time consuming. Yes if you look hard enough you can find it, but we are talking about kids who can't or don't know how to look for help elsewhere. I don't know the answer but I know charging $30 for 2-3 matches is not the answer.

Singlet vs Shorts and Shirt/MMA Gear

Much like all the other ole timers I prefer the use of a singlet. However if we can get more kids out because they can use a short/shirt combo then I'm all for it. As mentioned above most wrestlers prefer singlets. This would also probably change for those that started wearing short/shirts. They would change to the singlet as they progress in wrestling. Uniforms in other sports have changed dramatically. Just look at this weekend, basketball shorts have changed look at teh 70s and 80s compared to todays baggy long shorts they use today.

Additional pound for the state tournament?

I still don't think 1 more pound would make a difference. I'd be OK of they gave it, I just don't think it is necessary. Plus we also didn't practice on our days off, which were almost the same as everyone else in Nky. Not sure if I was fat, probably more stupid than fat, I'm sure I was closer to 5% body fat when I made the weight, (We didn't have body fat testing in prehistoric times) I just started my wt. loss as soon as school started. And definitely not Phat which is Pretty Hot And Tempting.

Additional pound for the state tournament?

I'm not sure if giving 1 more lb will really makes much of a difference. I know our kids are still on weight, actually 2 lbs under now that we have the +1 lb. I know as a coach for those that were cutting hard the rule was miss wt. 1 time thats extra practice for a week miss it a second time you must go up a wt. class. It showed me that the kid either was not able to make the wt class safely or that he was not disciplined enough to do it right. In my career in the stone age I never missed wt. And I dropped 20+ my sr. year and no less than 10 any of my other years.

    upsets

Since you guys kept bringing Allen into the picture. Allen pinned Davis at Central after he was beating Davis by about 6, then lost to him at the jaguar 18-6. Yes he beat Berrie 7-6 twice this year. The reason I bring this up is because wrestlers with different styles cause some wrestlers problems and they don't win by a big margin. So you can't measure one wrestler by how he wrestled against another wrestler. Only if he won or lost.

    Headgear

Is anyone else having a problem getting a headgear that has the hair cover attached? It seems that Klif Keen is the only supplier of this item and they are sold out for the year. I know that Ohio has removed this rule because of the unavailability to get the needed equipment. I have between 2-3 high school wrestlers and numerous middle school wrestlers that need this, and I am unable to obtain even one. Can anyone help me here.

Cooper was missing a couple studs and Holmes defeats Cooper 39-37 on senior night. Proud of the bulldogs on an underdog win tonight.

  9. I sure hope Austin enjoy his final state title this year. To see the big boy smile is something else. He deserved to have a big smile after number 4. All the nay sayers or haters need to keep to themselves at the state tourney this year and allow him to enjoy his final romp through the Ky state tourney. I for one believe he should get a standing Ovations after his final win. There is not a nicer kid around off the mat (he's a killer on the mat) and deserves all the respect after his sr. and final year hear in the bluegrass state. If I don't get the chance to say it at the state tourney congrats Austin. To many more important people will be congratulating you at the state for me to probably get close enough to do it in person.

    Senior night dual at Holmes

Only 2 Cooper kids got forfeits. A Hwt, our biggest kid weighs 197 and he bumped to wrestle the 220 and their 113 who was an overweight 106. Our two 8th graders our 96 lb 106 didn't want to wrestle up and our 8th grade 113 didn't make wt. and wrestled the middle school match that was going on at the same time. It was possible for maybe one more match nothing more. It was a once in a lifetime win everything fell into place. 2 of our wrestlers kept the match to a decision to try and get the win. It seems odd that after all these years of Holmes losing duals that when we finally get a big dual win we have to apologize for it Coach Price deserves this win. He has worked his tail off getting kids on the team and keeping them out. Of the 12 guys on the varsity team only 4 of them wrestled last year. A couple were hurt last year and a few others took a year or two off and returned this year. All because coach Price worked hard to get them back on the team.

    Senior night dual at Holmes

Not sure how it was bush league? We sent out 12 wrestlers. Didn't have a 113 or Hwt. Our 113 didn't make wt. and we even bumped up our 195 to get a match at 220. Other than that we sent out our entire team same as they will be at the end of the year. Last year we came to the senior night at Cooper for one dual and we only had 6 kids on the whole team. We had another team back out on us at the last minute (Fri) we couldn't find another team and we couldn't cancel because it was our senior night. Usually we would still have lost a dual like this. The reason I'm proud is because everyone showed up, and we won because a couple of guys were able to keep the matches close so as not to give up the extra points. It may not seem like a big deal to you. But filling 12 wt classes at Holmes is a huge deal. This team has worked hard to get kids out for the team, to keep them out and to separate so to fill more wt. classes. Its' what every team does I know, but its not what has happened here in the past. You didn't see our guys whooping and hollering after the dual, or making a big deal about it. We took them in the hall, told hem how proud we were of them, that we were able to get this far so as to win the dual. Then mentioned to them that now we have to win more individual matches so that it would not be that close. We have very few wrestlers with more than 3 years experience on the team. Even some of those took a year or two off somewhere in their career. Don't get me wrong Cooper has some awesome wrestlers and expect to see many of them to place in the state tourney. We think Cooper is a class act. Good kids good coaches, good parents and good fans. I think most of our wrestlers get along with one another and I know our guys root for the Cooper kids more than any other school, when its not against us. I changed it for you TFS. In the past we have always been on the other end of these type of losses. Loosing because of forfeits.

    State dual qualifiers

Back in the dino age in NKY we had a master schedule. You were assigned a week where you had to wrestle a team on or before that week. Then the next week and so on. It worked out because the small teams that could not hold home meets or the big schools did not want to waste a date only wrestling 3-6 matches because of forfeits could piggyback on another dual, and make it a tri or quad. By the end of the year every team in the district had wrestled each other. It helped with seeding the district tourney.

Ploy was probably not the best word for what I meant. But I agree a 2 score lead is a good advantage.

    State dual qualifiers

OK I did not know that. I am not the top dog here. I have no idea how things are done now, it has changed since i last was here 6 years ago. Our head coach is just now getting organized to where he may know when the meetings are. It comes down to each sectional. You should make sure that every team had a dual with every other team in the sectional at some time before the state duals. It shouldn't matter if its the 1st weekend or the week prior. You take that win or lose and count it toward qualifying to state duals. We wrestled 2 of the teams earlier in the year. That could have counted toward the sectional qualifier. It shouldn't be hard to schedule duals with everyone in your sectional. As you mentioned it was done geographically. It does not have to be one event to qualify.

We are lucky in that fact then. because If that were true here we would not have a team and I would be somewhere else. We had a chance. We have a punchers chance against Newport and will find out next wed. I believe it will come down to 1 match as to who will win the dual.

    State dual qualifiers

:I'm all for more matches. We use to use our NKAC tourney as our qualifier. One year we had round robin duals in 2 days. I started with 5 wrestlers on the 1st day and only had (1) on the second day and wrestled 5 duals with 1 wrestler. I did it but would never do it again. It was embarrassing to the one wrestler I had to watch 13 kids get there hand raised after he wrestled (he was a 106 lber) He was an 7th grader who begged be to just forfeit his match, but I refused.

I think maybe is should be like Ohio is doing. They spread it out over the 2-3 weeks before state duals. Allows for a couple of duals on the weekdays every week. No weekend is disturbed for those who have been attending tourneys for years. And yes I know the OHSAA sanctions the event and forces them to do so.

    State dual qualifiers

Yes that is true. Our hands were tied. If we would have forfeited the money to the other tourney our school would have had a fit. On top of that if we would have qualified we would not have been able to go because our school would not have sprung for the hotel stay, heck they complain when we have to stay for the state tourney.

With the original date we were going to make the effort to go and probably would have, but we were obligated financially to another tourney when the date was changed. Our head coach is ticked about the whole situation.

    2015 State Duals Info

In many cases its a psychological ploy. If you can get 2 takedowns in the first period then your up 4-1 going into the 2nd period. Lets your opponent know that you are controlling the tempo of the match. If you take them down and you can score backs or a pin you should take the opportunity. Usually after about 20 seconds on the mat you know if you can turn them. Then you decide if you want to take him down a second time tor the 4-1 lead. However running up the score by getting 4-6 takedowns in the 1st is overkill.

    State dual qualifiers

In the section 2 qualifier the date was changed and was confusing as to which date was the correct one. Let alone it finally being held on the middle school district day, which does not allow for a team to be at 100%. Maybe not a big deal for the big schools, but for the small schools its a big deal.

Who qualified for the Section 2 small schools?
  23. As far as I know. Rankings are NOT used at seed meetings. I could just see it. "Hey my kid should be seeded ??? because the rankings say so". It would never hold any weight, and I don't think it should hold any weight at seed meetings. As mentioned the rankings are just for fun and to see where some of the wrestlers you can't/don't see are doing and at what weight they are doing it at. Then again it does not really matter what weight Johnny is going on the other side of the state. You choose a weight class you are most comfortable at, then train at that weight and try and demolish anyone who steps in front of you on the mat. I find that for most kids it better if they don't know the kid standing in front of them, they then just do their thing with no holding back.

    Poor Match Record Reporting

I do spend the time putting the info in after every event. Is the ipad usage free or is that the extra fee on track wrestling? Yes I know its only $50 but the school will not pay for it, and I can't afford the $50 for the program let alone an ipad itself.

    State dual qualifiers

I'll tell you this. The small school sectionals in our region were changed last minute the last two years. This year the confusion was on which day it was on. Either the weekday or the weekend. Found out it was both. Kind of hard to schedule for that. Who gets punished for the change in day/days? Teams can't get out of engagements to other tourneys on last minute without a financial penalty and not being invited back the next year. If it were scheduled on the same day each year it helps with scheduling. If every school in the state goes to the sectional then there really is not problem. Sounds to me that the only way to get this problem solved is to get KHSAA to sanction the event. Kind of like the regional and state tourney. "You can only wrestle at these events on this day, or don't wrestle at all on that day".
