Thanks for keeping the rankings going Ranger!

I’ve said it before ,wether your #1 or #21 it is so much motivation for the boys and so much fun for the parents. just relax and try to enjoy the season.
With that being said next week can you expand it to the the top 50?

Ha Ha.  I considered going to 35, but maintaining 30 is becoming overwhelming.  If all results were posted by Sunday afternoon, it would be possible, but it literally takes at least 3-4 days to barely get through 30.  It's tough, we have seen such huge changes at the top of the rankings that I feel like we need weekly updates, but don't want to constantly miss action in the 15-30 range.  And let me tell you, if you were following a few of these weights, the results of the guys in the 15-30 range is total chaos (eg, #19 will pin #15 then lose to #27 and #29; and it happens every week).

Swing and a miss @ 215.  Bullet Central (#16)  lost 2x to North Oldham (#21) last week at Jessamine County Clash.  That’s a big miss.

Almost a good catch.  Try again next week.  I actually did ignore some of those results from Jessamine because there was conflicting or results that did not make sense.  Once that gets cleared up those results will be reflected.

  3. A lot of updates (light on 106), but still a LOT of results missing in track.  I've heard of some match results, but have not reflected them until they hit the system.  It is what it is.

Union is pushing their lead out more and more each week.

    WOW

A little biased here, but Hunter Isaacs taking out #2 Brown and #1 Johns back to back at Great Crossing was pretty impressive.

On the road and this is late post anyway, so enough chit chat.  Enjoy.

  4. I think a lot of the nonsense has been hidden/deleted.

It's really simple.  Had NOT wrestled 126 (at least anything posted) prior to this past weekend.  I moved kids to the weight they have been wrestling.  With the top ranked 132 and a highly ranked 138, he was out.  Not all that complicated.  Now that he made 126 and competed there, he will be ranked based on his results.

Surprised that Favorite,Moncrief, and Walton dropped. Last week at CWIT Moncrief got 2nd and Favorite got 3rd in 132LB. Yet both dropped and in same order. Moncrief had a significant win against a kid from Indiana. Walton looks good.

Couple thoughts.  Yes, they had a solid day at a good event at Conner.  As for the order, Favorite has beaten Moncrief head-to-head which is the primary criteria in rankings.  As for their rankings, and specifically them dropping overall, you have to consider all of their results throughout the season and the result of other kids around the state.  I'm a big Walton fan (ha ha) and hope to see her have success this post season.  She is a hammer.

  6. I know I know it took a bit this week.  30 is a LOT to get through on a weekly basis and get any sleep at all.

    A few highlights:

    - Yes, Union County has rocketed to the top of the rankings this week and by a fairly good margin.  At this point it would be hard to see them losing in either a dual or tournament format to anyone in the state.

    - Teams 2-4 are a relatively tight group.  After removing wrestlers who have not competed Trinity slides back just a bit, but sits in the 5 spots alone.

    - WOWs of this week are:

            1) Colton Lewis (PRP - 285) who has been dominant this season and pinned the top ranked wrestler in the state

            2) Another Union Co wrestler on the list, Jeremy Ray (138) takes out top ranked wrestler to help propel his team to the top of the Johnny Drennan and the rankings

            3) Louisville Western - got to see these guys and their coaching staff up close this weekend and I am very impressed with the work and effort these guys are putting in.  From a team on the brink of being dropped to a full lineup with some really solid kids.  Hopefully we see the same progression from teams like Eastern and Ballard that are just getting back on the mat.

Big matchup I am excited to watch tomorrow.  At 157 #1 Charlie McKune and #2 Braedon Herron.  Should be a great one at Great Crossing tomorrow.

  7. Should have known this week would come.  As lineups and weight classes are becoming more and more clear, Union County is making a push toward the top of the rankings.  I have a virtual tie at the top between the Braves and Paducah Tilghman.  A small step down has JC, Great Crossing, and Trinity also in a tight race for the last trophy spots.

I removed a number of names and make a lot of weight adjustments based on results to date.  Everyone should be back on the mat by this weekend with the weight allowance, so we should have a great sense of most of the +2 drops.

Wrestler(s) of the week go to Gavin Ricketts with the big win over #1 Kiser and Lucas Ricketts with the big win over #2 Krebs. Those huge changes in the rankings have put Union County is a position where they may walk into the post season as the championship favorite.

  8. Note on the dual rankings, because I know they may not be reflective of some actual results.  These are 100% based on a formula that is driven by individual rankings and assumed individual matchups.  So if wrestlers are missing in a dual or coaches bump kids around the dual result may not line up and will not be reflected in these rankings.  My formula says if everyone is on the mat and at the weight they are ranked at this is how it should go.  Obviously, matches and duals are won on the mat and not by a formula, but it is what it is.

  9. Merry Christmas!  One last update for 2022.  Too much going on next week and not a ton of action.  So after new year's, I will start putting kids at the weight they have wrestled (with only a few exceptions) and remove kids who don't have any results.

As expected, Union is marching toward the top of the team rankings.  I still have Paducah Tilghman with a slight lead, but Union is on the tail.  Trinity is hanging in 3rd, with JC and Great Crossing in a dead heat for 4th.

But we still have a lot of wrestling to go before we even get to the beginning of our now normal 3 weekend post season.

Is it just me or are there a LOT of great wrestlers that are still 0-0? Seems like a lot.

Yeah.  A LOT.  Usually after Christmas I remove them if they haven't competed.  Probably need to give a little longer runway this year unless I have information on a kid to avoid too much chaos.  But I will also be a little busier than usual over the holidays this year, so I may wait until after the first week in January to make any sweeping changes.

Records mean very little.  So many kids get a ton of forfeits in duals or match up with inferior jv opponents or wrestlers with poor records through a chunk of the schedule.  A base of the rankings come from prior results, primarily post season success.  The main way for a "newer" kid to jump into the rankings is to beat or at least compete well with a ranked kid or advance in a competitive tournament.  I have a couple coaches and fans around the state who will objectively provide input on kids they see that impress them, but mostly it comes down to beating recognized good opponents.

  12. Lots of updates this week.  So many names disappearing from the Kentucky wrestling world; hope this isn't a trend.  Also a LOT of weights still up in the air.  I don't ever recall seeing so many kids whose minimum weight puts them in limbo for the months of November/December (e.g. minimum weight is 113.8, so they can't make scratch and have to weight for the +2 at Christmas).  I'm seeing a lot of this for kids that I believe will drop down, so I am being patient with a lot of wrestlers and not moving them unless I have seen a weigh in sheet that indicates to me they are NOT dropping.

Something new and interesting I'm starting this week is picking one or two wrestlers of the week to highlight big movers in the rankings or big wins.

WOW #1: Landon Evans (Ryle - 113 lbs) - Landon made his return from a major, major knee injury one year ago this week and looked like he is 100% recovered and could be a state finalist contender at the Raider Rumble this weekend.

WOW #2: Kshaun Brown (Union Co - 190 lbs) - Brown looked great winning the Rumble, with a W over returning state placer Allen in the finals.  This gives UC another potential state medalist that will be critical in that team title race.

WOW #3A-B: Jayden and Jordyn Raney (Union Co - 113/120 lbs) - two more placements in major national events

    Notes:

    1) In the team title battle, PT has pulled out to a slight lead with UC and Trinity neck and neck for the runner-up spot.  I have JC and Great Crossing really close for the 4/5 spots.  With JC/GC coming out of semi-state 2 and the top 3 in deeper semi-state 1, that could even the playing field heading to GRC for the final round.  This is still shaping up to be a really exciting team race.

    2) Not much excitement at the top of each weight, but the "placer" spots have some movement this week.

    3) I expect to see a lot more results showing up in track over the next week.  This will help to solidify the 15-25 slots and fill out those weights with less than 25 kids ranked.  After Christmas, hopefully we have number to expand to top 30.  Reminder, if coaches don't post results they won't be reflected.

  13. We are back in the groove of wrestling every weekend.  And after this weekend I think we will have a much better view of the state of a number of weight classes and teams.  I haven't seen results for all teams, but we have some data in track to start to shift things around.  BUT most teams have wrestled only duals so far and with that we see a lot of weight class shifting, so I'm sure there will still be a lot of movement in the coming weeks.

FYI, over the next week or so I will start removing any wrestler from the rankings that does not appear on their team roster.  I usually like to give a little time for injuries or kids coming in from football to get their weight in order and get tested.  But likely starting next week you will see some names drop off because I haven't seen them in the system.
