    Rebel Rankings 2005/2006 - #5

I'm going to start off my post this week with a brief editorial. How can we expect to increase the suppport of our sport and grow interest if we don't support it ourselves. This weekend was one of the better meets of the regular season, the 5 star classic, which featured 4 of my top 10 teams and numerous highly ranked individuals. BUT, as far as I can see, received absolutely no media coverage. At a minimum there should be a piece in the box scores if not an article discussing the great matchups, including top out-of-state competition. But no, we blow a chance to get our kids names in the paper and the recognition they deserve. I guess it is more important to save that space for the early rounds of the Australian Open or local bowling league scores. OK. Not many changes this week. Shake-ups at 135 and 140. Larue has moved into a dead heat with South Oldham for #2. As usual, thanks for all of the input and enjoy! 103 Way Co Travis Sullivan Un Co Adam Carr Wood Co Shane Parks Tri Dan Smith Whit Co Dalton Evans NO Andre Zeppa PD Jon Voth Lar Co Tritsten Hines Sen Elliott Martin Bull Cen Badgett Mc Cen Daniel Bowling SK Robbie Vaughn Ryle Casey Chitwood FC Tommy Warren SO Paul Huhnke Con TJ Bates Scott Steve Supe Cam Co Priscila Brownfield And Co Ben Joseph NH Brandon Wilder 112 Wood Co Coty Lewis JC Cory Spencer Eas Joaquin Luna Un Co Chance Puckett Way Co Coty Vinsant HC Matt Zarth Lar Co Lucas Carmen CH Mason Bradbury NH Josh Johnson NO Antonio Zeppa Doss Alan Marksbury Cam Co Korey Shotwell Scott Gabe Supe Tri Jacob Barton PRP J. Rebel Rankings 2005/2006 - #5

oghrdz1212 - the current 112 rankings for these guys are based a lot on the Jeff Co. tournament. Coach Coomes sent out the brackets to all coaches (thanks Coach Coomes!!!). Burkett is now at 103. Lile lost to Higgs in the consilations and Marksbury turned it on. Big tournament results carry a lot more weight with me.

    Rebel Rankings #2005-3

A very exciting week in the world of KY wrestling. The WCI lived up to the hype (as usual) with a number of matchups between highly ranked wrestlers: 103 #3 vs #4 112 #1 vs #3 119 #2 vs #3 125 #1 vs #3 140 #1 vs #2 171 #1 vs #2 189 #1 vs #2 215 #1 vs #2 Not to mention 3 of the top 4 teams in the state! All of that said, not much changed at the top of the charts (excluding Murton changing weights and Byrd getting healthy) except at 125. I have included the records of those wrestlers who were in the finals at WCI (as they were announced). I have also extended the list to the top 17 at each weight. Next week I will hopefully have 20 guys at each weight that I am comfortable with ranking. Please continue to provide feedback as the more guys I include on the list the greater chance I will miss a dual result that could affect the order. state dual

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that too. Harrison is on the outside looking in for now. And why does hosting get you into the tournament. If that's the case let's let Frankfort and Franklin Co. have automatic berths to the state tournament.
  5. Ranger123

    state dual

Pappy - I have to disagree with the #3. Yes, Harrison finished higher at the 5 star, but with that format you can't totally believe the team scores. South Oldham had Campbell Co in their pool vs John Hardin for Harrison, not exactly equal competition. Head to head I definitely give the advantage to South Oldham. Also, go back a couple weeks and South Oldham dominated the Conner tournament (including Harrison). But I agree with all else. It should be a great dual tournament. Exciting re-match between Woodford and Larue in the finals. But a lot of work and tough teams to beat to get there.

    Toughest region

For those of you who do not appreciate my weekly rankings, I have developed something more scientific. I know there has been discussion on here before about what region is the toughest. And people have looked at the number of placers by region and top teams just to name a couple of methods. Well, this is something that has my interest as well and I believe some re-alignment is in order, but we will save that for another day. For your information, I am a true numbers guy. I have a degree in Statistics and spend my days working with numbers and using historical data to make predictions about what will happen in the future. That said, I think the best way to evaluate the strength of the 8 regions is state tournament scoring. All regions are on a level playing field with the opportunity to send the 4 best competitors at each weight class. This actually gives the weaker regions a slight advantage as tougher kids may finish 5th in a hard region. But, the regions that put up the most points should be the toughest. I only have good results for the past 6 years (I adjusted the scores using statistician magic for the years before the field was expanded to 32), but here is what I have found: Points Region 6 3,105 Region 7 2,617 Region 5 2,149 Region 2 2,087 Region 4 2,035 Region 8 2,012 Region 1 1,810 Region 3 947 Region 6 has been the dominant region with Campbell Co., Ryle, Simon Kenton, Conner, Scott, and Dixie Heights scoring in the top 25. Next is Region 7 with Woodford Co., Henry Clay, and Dunbar in the top 20. Region 5 has South Oldham, Eastern, Fern Creek, and Oldham Co. in the top 25. Region 3 only has 3 teams in the top 35 (PRP #29, Desales #30, and Valley #32). I think this shows a lot of evidence that Region 3 is not on par with the other regions. I am not saying there are no good wrestlers in western Jefferson County, but the guys are not pulling their weight when they get to Frankfort. Of course many people will make the argument that some regions are skewed because of the success of one team, such as Woodford Co. in Region 7. So I re-calculated the point totals eliminating the top team in each region and the results are very similar. Region 2 has the largest drop-off (without Larue Co.) and Region 1 moves up due to its balance. Again Region 6 is the dominant region and Region 3 lags behind. Points Region 6 2,108 Region 7 1,467 Region 5 1,393 Region 1 1,347 Region 8 1,341 Region 4 1,220 Region 2 1,184 Region 3 756 So I next eliminated the top 2 teams in each region with the same results. Points Region 6 1,439 Region 1 990 Region 7 953 Region 5 935 Region 8 853 Region 2 843 Region 4 625 Region 3 576 And again with the top 3 eliminated. Points Region 6 804 Region 1 794 Region 8 679 Region 7 635 Region 2 520 Region 5 538 Region 3 409 Region 4 140 The bottom line is Region 6 is the cream of the crop from top to bottom (tough for me to say growing up and wrestling in Region 7 country) and Region 3 needs some help. As of now, it does look like Region 6 has come back to the pack for this season and Region 7 looks tough. Unless some guys really step up in the next month, Region 3 will again trail the pack. Region 7 590 Region 5 581 Region 2 466 Region 6 403 Region 1 339 Region 8 338 Region 4 239 Region 3 91

    Toughest region

Not too bad for a down year in Region 6. Right now, 3 teams in my top 16 (Ryle #8, Campbell Co. #9, Simon Kenton #16).

    where are the new ranking

I just wanted to clarify my comment. I wasn't specifically pointing out Trinity and St X. I don't think those guys seek special treatment at all. I just think those closest to coach Coomes seem to get a lot of attention.

I agree as well, but my point was that he has a better shot at 130, though slim.
  14. Ranger123

    130

My guess is that Howard's goal is to win, not place 2nd.
  15. Ranger123

    130

chief - I'll give you the top couple of guys are really, really good at 130, but come on, let's be realistic. They are not Jacob Murton. And I'm not saying he is unbeatable. I'm just saying 999 out of 1000 matches he's going to win easily. Not so for Parker and Peace.
  16. Ranger123

    Toughest region

pld - before last year Harrison stunk it up in Frankfort. Last season was the first time that they really put up any points. I did coach in this state for a few years. That experience hasn't given me a lot of respect for the KWCA. From what I can tell it is an organization in name only. It really accomplishes very little and is doing nothing to contribute to the growth of wrestling in KY. eville - as far as my methodology, it depends on what you are trying to gauge. My intent was to show if the regions are balanced historically. In any given year there will be fluctuations (region 6 is down a little this season, but still darn good). But over a number of years, which should actually be longer than 6, are the strength of the regions reasonably balanced. I would say not even close. Based on this, it looks like Region 6 is sending #3 and #4 seeds that are winning a lot of matches and probably leaves a lot of #5 guys at home that could have pulled at least a #3 in other regions.

    where are the new ranking

That's a change. I was in the coaches association for over 2 years and never saw a single email from Coomes. Maybe my input wasn't as important as the guys from Trinity and St X and the like even though I was a paying member head coach.

Not to discount their chances this year (though I think Woodford will be unstoppable in February) he may have his best opportunity for that team title next year.

    WCI

I with you pioneer. I didn't see him, but from what I hear, Trice was one of the best without argument. And that's what it took to pull off that sort of feat (a freshman winning at a higher weight class). Add to that the competition at 145 this year. But Courtney has a lot of work to do this year and the next 3.
