    Hair Bonnets

Oh sure....blame it on the coaches!! Should they also be responsible for making sure your shoes are tied, and your butt is wiped? LOL...just kidding. But seriously, this is a funny thread. Is the hair cover thing really called a bonnet? Is that the technical name for it? Man the times have changed, it used to be your only option was cutting your hair with whatever sharp object was handy which usually wasn't a pair of scissors. It seems to me that they should penalize the wrestler with the bonnet if it interferes with the match. TJ Bates at the state tournament his 8th grade year lost a point because he had under armor shorts underneath his singlet. It was tucked in before the match, but it slid out during the match. His opponent was given a point, and he lost the match by 1. I don't see any difference here.

    Grade Year

When this issue was getting debated in the m.s. league, I talked to some school administrators about this. Most of the school administrators will tell you it's bad to hold a kid back after a certain grade level, because they get bored and all kinds of stuff. I believe they recommend 3rd grade or earlier. On the other hand, if a kid is struggling in school to make D's, C's & B's, if he's held back and becomes a straight A student...that is a success I would say. It's a very personal choice. If it's based on academics, and for the right reasons, then more power to them. But if otherwise it may end up hurting the kid and that's a shame. An interesting argument against the school administrator (an assistant principal)....correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard school districts do not get extra money if a kid repeats a grade. I heard something about school districts get a set amount of dollars per kid for 12 years of school. If the kid repeats a grade, that pool of money does not get additional funding. If that is true...then to me the school administrators have a conflict of interest there big time. We had a kid on our team who was very, very smart....and was moved up a grade. But he was very immature for that grade and constantly acted up, showing off for the older kids. He probably should have been held back to kids more his maturity level. Ultimately it's a decision the parents have to make in the best interest of their kids. Hopefully they choose wisely.

    Officials

i realize this thread was started to discuss the better refs and why, but it has sort of people don't want this thread to get to a point of personally attacking refs....and perhaps another thread should be started, BUT...i wanted to throw this idea out there on how the referee situation could be improved. In ohio, their refs are required to attend a certain number of actual training sessions. they usually cover a few specific topics. such as stalling. they review films, etc. there is usually a senior referee who watches the film with the group, and they discuss it. it seems to me this is how they develop consistency.

    Beast of the East results

I could not agree more with this. To me (not a referee at all) but it seems like refs in our state call stalling on the bottom man in cases where he's not really stalling, he's just being dominated. In a lot of these cases it seems like a stale mate would be more appropriate. I could be completely wrong here, but it seems like refs lean towards stalling on the bottom guy when it should be a stale mate. Then refs allow kids on their feet to simply block off for an entire period before hitting a kid with a warning. If a wrestler is just tying up and hanging on the head for more than 20-30 seconds...give him a warning at least and be consistent, 1st, 2nd, 3rd period...it shouldn't matter. About the valvoline 30 pt inspection....that's a good one. I agree with Ranger that the refs could be more strict on this, but really why would they want to? I understand it's the rules...but it's not what should be emphasized. I've noticed in college wrestling, those refs are very loose on that stuff. It's more like what grapplehed is talking about...as soon as the top guy is close to position, blow the whistle. It seems like those refs are not emphasizing small technicalities on starting positions. They emphasize constant action.

    Middle School Districts/Regional/State

I don't know if clubs are "needed". I think they are, but without clubs, some high schools would not be able to have a feeder program. For example, at Conner Middle school, we were allowed to start a m.s. wrestling club, but not a school sponsored team. Our flyers had to be approved by the board of education, and that was the fist thing that had to be removed. It had to be a club. If clubs were not allowed, that would have been 1 less wrestling opportunity in this state. As far as this whole thread goes, these things have been discussed extensively at the coaches meetings. BigCoach is the MAN with the plan as far as this stuff goes. He knows what he is talking about here. I've always viewed middle school wrestling as this: an opportunity for middle school kids to compete at a level that they can compete & learn at that is appropriate for them. If an 8th grade kid is good enough to compete at h.s., not just fill a weight class and avoid a forfeit, let him compete at state duals or whatever. That's a h.s. coach's call. But if he's just filling an empty weight class, and getting creamed..that doesn't do the kid any good, and that's bad coaching in my opinion. Middle school events should try to avoid the main h.s. events, because they can. There might be a day where some conflicts are unavoidable...but i don't think we're there yet.

    Campbell vs. Ryle

he was out yesterday, he will be at 135 for the year. CC's 130 bumped up to 135 and was beat by Ryle's 135. I believe it was Aylor from Ryle, not sure though. Pretty solid wrestler.

    Western Hills duals

Patti - i agree with the stalling call. Jake Lee was stalling, no question about it (in my opinion). You can probably guess by my name who i'm going for. I will say this, with all due respect to Haynes, Haynes should let the refs do the reffing, the coaches do the coaching, and him do the wrestling. His coaches were rightfully protesting stalling...that's their job. Haynes was raising his hands in the air begging for a stalling call (at least 3 or 4 times). I don't know of many refs who will turn right around and award a stalling call for a kid who is asking for one. Justified or not. Like i said, no disrespect intended to Haynes - he's a tough wrestler, but I don't think many refs will call a stalling when a wrestler is waving his hands asking for one. They don't even seem to respond too much when coaches are screaming for one! ;-)

    Westen Hills 11-24-07

There was some pretty good wrestling today. I'm sure all the individual matches will be up soon. Team wise, it was Campbell County & North Hardin for 1st and 2nd, Campbell won a pretty close dual. Lafayette & Franklin County would have been for 3rd & 4th. It appeared Franklin County won that one, but I'm not sure. Great job to the people running this tournament. It started exactly on time, finished early and everything ran like clockwork!!

    Middle School Preseason Rankings

Troxell is tough, out of the 3 kids ahead of him, all are capable of beating him on a good day. This is a solid weight class. Hitchings is straight up better than him. Brent is without a doubt #1 in that weight class. However, I think Brent may end up lighter than 103 unless he grows. Cooper will most likely be at 110 or above according to him. Stout is a very solid wrestler, and would most likely give Luke a very good match.
