    Union County in St. Louis

Congratulations to UC for placing second at the St. Charles West Incitational in St. Louis this weekend. Great showing with teams from Missouri! Illinois, Iowa and UC. Brock and Trae won championships in tough weight classes, with Brock pinning in the finals. Anyone know if Brock got the OW award? Great showing for the Kentucky boys. Keep Them Home

So arguably the historically most successful college program in America is the University of Iowa. Only 18 of the 37 young men on the roster right now are from the state of Iowa, the rest recruited from New Jersey to California. That's true of every sport and all respected programs. Mark Stoops just recruited 7 of the top 25 football players in Ohio, but building around trying to keep the best in state talent here. There are enough D1 wrestlers here to build a nice program around them. It will need to be Louisville in the ACC. The SEC is not an option - although Mizzou kept their program and took wrestling to the MAC when other sports joined the SEC. I would still like to see a D1 program in the state.

    Hammer and Anvil

Here is where I do have to agree with Tarzan. Going up the weight classes you have Boston, Trae, Brock. Fauz, ATM. I have seen Kentucky wrestling for 30 years and can't remember a time when this many nationally ranked high school kids were in the state at the same time. Sure you had a handful of them, even one wrestle in the Dapper Dan and in the Olympics. However, let's be honest, you likely have 4 D1 recruits this year...with ATM a certainty next year. That's at least 5 D1 signees in the state tournament, with possibly more before it's over...not to mention NAIA signees. This year is really packed with talent...and at the national level. More than I have ever seen in Kentucky at one time. One question, Tarzan, I expect ATM can win high school nationals and I certainly expect him to get D1 offers (may have them coming already). Will he wrestle heavyweight next year to prepare for college? Not sure what his natural weight is and where he will expect to wrestle in college. Since we are all proud of him and his accomplishments, and we will be proud to say he represented Kentucky when he is winning big in college, we are already interested in how you think he might start preparing for college wrestling.

Tarzan: I didn't quite understand. Why did SK have to leave the tournament before the finals? I agree, that's just disrespectful to hard-working kids and coaches.

    132

Brock is the number 1 seed at 132 in St. Louis this weekend. Tough tournament! Teams from Missouri, Iowa, Illinois...and of course the Kentucky boys! Trae in a tough weight class with high state placers from Missouri and Iowa, in addition to Trae. will be fun. Good luck guys.

    132

According to the Fairfiield results I saw from this weekend, Sean Fauz was at 132. Will there be a Fauz vs. Ervin match at state, or will he be at 138 for the team? Of course, since Kentucky does not seed their state tournament, if they were both at 132 you could see two national caliber wrestlers meeting in the quarterfinals. Any thoughts on whether this matchup might happen at state?

Excellent results. Especially impressive considering the guys sick. Lees Summit from Missouri and OFRP out of Illinois are very good programs. This is really a strong representation out of Kentucky. Great job UC!!!

Not ALL of our best kids, Wildcat...but some excellent Kentucky representation there. There are some great ones at the Rumble this weekend as well against some out of state competition. Should be a fun weekend!

    2014 Team State Champs!

Very good point here, Mpire. When Kyle Ruschell was a senior at Ryle he deliberately went up weight classes and competed at events like the Beast of the East to prepare for college. In fact he kept growing and as we know became an All-American at Wisconsin. You have an excellent point about 120 and prepping for the next level.

    Union County's 2013-2014 Varsity Schedule

I personally know the coach at St. Charles West, who is a former Missouri wrestler. That tournament has some very strong teams from Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. Looks like the UC boys are looking for quality out of state competition...not afraid to leave the state and get match tough. Good luck and carry the Kentucky banner high this year!!!

The puzzle is Louisville. They do not have a wrestling program, which I assume is what you are referring to. Interesting!

    Brock Ervin commits to Illinois

Litmus Test: How many imes has Brock won the Mater Dei (IN) Invitational? There have been years when no Kentucky wrestler won the tournament...most years tougher than the Kentucky State Tournament...although we are getting better! By the way, I'm just pointing out that he has won outside of Kentucky, meant as a compliment to his skills. And recognized by a very good D1 program in a state (Illinois) that could argue it is one of the best high school wrestling states in America. (Based on national FS & GR duals).

    Johnson Central

I live in another part of the state, but Johnson Central looks like they cleaned up in Region 8, which has been Wayne County territory in recent years (Sheldon Clark years ago). Since I don't know much about them, are their 40+ win kids good - have they wrestled good competition in KY, Georgia and Tennessee - or have they padded records with forfeits in dual meets in Southeast Kentucky? Not being provocative here, just looking for information. As Mpire says, a couple of losses against excellent competition preps you for the show, so if the Johnson Central kids have gone against tough kids and have 40+ wins it looks different than if they have stayed close to home and had a lot of forfeits. Still, they knocked heads in Region 8. Any information?

    Best matches at State Duals

Don't assume they will meet. If KY seeded the state tourney they might be 2 & 3 seeds and meet in the semis. However, it is not unthinkable in KY that Stephen, Lampe and Cooper could all be on the same side of the bracket. We've seen this before...many times...but stop talking about how other states successfully seed their state tournaments to assure better matches late in the tournament, in particular the semis and the finals. But to mention that on this forum always gets a strong response.
