  2. hFloWrestler of the Week: Austin Myers, KY

    Revenge is best served GOLD!

And that is exactly how things went for West Virginia bound big man Austin Myers who defeated Kenny Brinson 8-5 to take home his third NHSCA National title. It was just a season ago that Myers was defeated by Brinson to win his third title and that was all that Myers had on his mind when he and Brinson met for the second straight year in the finals.

The deciding factor for the Myers were the three backpoints he picked up to take the lead before riding out Brinson and killing his chances of joining the NHSCA four-timers club.

After the action packed match, Myers went to say that revenge was definitely on his mind.

“He took my chance for four titles, so I had to take his,” Myers said after the match.

En route to his third title, Myers recorded three straight pins – all in less than 40 seconds – before a pair of decisions in the semis and finals. His great performance, which was highlighted by his win over Brinson in the final, makes Austin Myers the FloWrestler of the Week presented by Cliff Keen.

  3. Have to say the award and recognition for Austins work in freestyle and greco was very special and one of the highlights of his career he has said many times being his states first Ever Double AA was his greatest accomplishment in the sport he was hesitant to do both but I knew he could and me and Coach Carr told him so and it was great .

THANKS Coach Carr and Smith and Kentucky USA wrestling I hope Austin can do even better this yr at Fargo and I'm sure he plans on supporting and giving back to help promote the sport and help the kids in any way he can .

That is one cool trophy .

    Well deserved. Great athlete.

With most youth and high school wrestling seasons now complete, it's the time of year where many wrestlers will transition from competing in folkstyle to freestyle. "Freestyle wrestling really teaches the fundamentals of the sport," says University of Iowa Head Assistant Coach Terry Brands, a two-time Freestyle World Champion and 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist. "The more skills you master in any style of wrestling, the better wrestler you can become."

  9. Josh Johnson (john hardin) didn't place as a 7th grader, but took 2nd his 8th grade year, 3rd as a freshman, 1st his sophomore year, 3rd junior year and 1st his senior year. 5 time state placer Is a great accomplishment.

Josh placed 2nd in the 8th at NH, and would have been a team state champ at NH if he had stayed as a freshman taking 3rd at state. Just a memory now! 5x and team champ!!! better. lol

USA Wrestling’s regional events are contested in freestyle and Greco-Roman, the only two styles of wrestling at the Olympic level. Freestyle wrestling is exciting, creative, and dynamic because points can be scored from almost anywhere. The most recent Olympic wrestling gold medals were won by freestyle wrestlers, Jordan Burroughs and Jake Varner in 2012, and Henry Cejudo in 2008. Other notable freestyle wrestlers include Cael Sanderson (Olympic gold medalist and four-time undefeated NCAA champion), Jake Herbert (World silver medalist and two-time NCAA Champion), and Tervel Dlagnev (World bronze medalist and two-time Division II NCAA Champion). Greco-Roman wrestling is known for powerful lifts and big throws, as all attacks must be made above the waist. Current Chief of Donor and Alumni Relations Steve Fraser was a gold medalist in 1984, and Rulon Gardner won gold in 2000.

  12. The Top Reasons Why You Won't Wrestle Greco

    February 18, 2015 / Myrmidon

Greco-Roman wrestling has taken a back seat to freestyle wrestling in this country for nearly its entire inception. Now with folkstyle’s popularity growing every day, the Olympic styles (especially Greco) have begun to be marginalized. As a competitor and coach, I find it a chore to try and convince wrestlers coming out fresh from their high school and college seasons to even give the sport a try. I am sure I am not the only one that can attest to this bizarre obtainment from Greco. It almost seems as if there is a spell that has been cast over the wrestling community; one that creates a bad stigma in my eye. Well, I am here to create a list of the top reasons why you won’t wrestle Greco:

    1. You are afraid.

What? You were expecting more? I hate to break it to you, but that is unmasked truth. Perhaps it might be an over simplified answer, but it is a harsh reality none the less. Every excuse I have heard in the book is just a thinly veiled ruse as to the real innate fear that dwells in your heart and mind. Still not convinced? Very well. I can break it down for every single excuse you have already formulated in your scared little head:

    “Greco is stupid”

Greco is upper body wrestling, half of what you use in folkstyle. Are you telling me half of what you use is stupid? You are just afraid of getting out of your comfort zone.

    “That’s not how I wrestle.”

True but it is the way some other people wrestle, some tough wrestlers. If a guy goes upper body with you, will you be ready to defend that? Or are you are just afraid to be prepared?

    “I don’t like throwing people.”

Greco is not just throws. It is upper body positioning, something you refuse to learn. What you really are saying is you don’t like being thrown.

“I’d rather focus on folkstyle or freestyle.”

Most developmental tournaments have Greco on the same day as freestyle. You don’t want more matches? You are just afraid to lose to someone in Greco that you can beat in freestyle.

“All I do is shoot leg attacks.”

…so you must always win, right? Don’t be afraid to learn.

    “I don’t get it.”

…you are afraid to learn new rules. Why were you not too scared to learn folkstyle or freestyle the first time?

    “The rules are confusing.”

See above. You mean to tell me the first time you watched baseball you knew exactly what the hell was going on?

“Greco can’t help me get better in folkstyle.”

Don’t complain when you get thrown, or have no options when you can’t finish a shot on certain tough guys. You are afraid of cross training.

“None of my friends wrestle Greco.”

Sorry to pull out the cliché, but would you jump off a bridge if your friends did first? Separate yourself from the pack. You are afraid to be different.

“No one wrestle Greco at all.”

It is true that Greco has low numbers in this country, but it is huge in Iran and the ex-Soviet Bloc countries. You are afraid to embrace other cultures.

    “No one good does Greco.”

Take that excuse and ask Chael Sonnen, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, or Matt Lindland if Greco helped their UFC careers. You are afraid to be great.

“There aren’t any opportunities in Greco.”

Besides having two Olympic training centers, there are tons of regional training centers located at various colleges around the country that train in Greco. You are just afraid of your options.

    “I can’t afford it.”

Really? Are you afraid you won’t be able to pay that smart phone bill or your Starbucks?

    “Greco is gay.”

How can you be so flippant and judgmental? If you equate the classic style of wrestling to homo-erotic display then you have more deep seeded issues that you are afraid of.

    “I am a girl.”

Minnesota Storm Cup offers a women’s division. Maybe if more women would compete there would be a higher demand. Are you going to sit there and tell me that you are afraid to be a trailblazer?

    “I just don’t like Greco.”

It’s fine to have a preference, but if you only did everything you liked when you trained you wouldn’t be any good. I hate doing sprints, but I know that I need strong lungs to beat my opponents. You are just afraid to work harder.

There countless others that I could go on and on about, but you should get the picture by now. Now I am not saying any of these excuses aren’t legitimate by any stretch of the imagination. All I ask is that you look deep inside yourself admit the truth to yourself:

You are afraid you might actually like it.

02/18/15 – State Wrestling Tournament Postponed

    February 18, 2015 2014-2015 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 18, 2015

In the interest of the safety and welfare of our competitors, coaches, workers and officials, and to ensure that participation experience for the student-athletes is optimal, the KHSAA has postponed the State Wrestling Championships, originally scheduled for February 19-21, until March 9-11.

“KHSAA State events are large-scale undertakings, and with the expansion of the State Tournament several years ago, we are very limited in options for holding the event,” said Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We absolutely have to be able to put down at least eight mats to get the tournament completed in two days, and that in and of itself limits our options. We are thankful our hosting partners at the Alltech Arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park were able to work out new dates. We tried to work cooperatively with another event that is scheduled for Sunday and rearrange schedules, but that group was unwilling to move, leaving us very few options.”

KHSAA Assistant Commissioner Michael Barren, who oversees the sport of Wrestling, added, “we have been able in very short order to rebook the large block of rooms we use at the official headquarters, and reschedule vendors and secure the arena on the first available three-day period for that facility. It was critical in working with the Commissioner that we make this decision as early as possible in the interest of the safety and welfare of our competitors, coaches, workers and officials. We will allow a one pound growth allowance for each of the weight classes in an additional effort to accommodate this postponement.”

Tackett stated that a great many options were reviewed before finalizing this move. “These championships are years in the making and scheduling, and it isn’t easy to simply move any of them. I know that Mike (Barren) and his tournament staff will work with the folks at Alltech Arena to get things moved in on March 9, and utilize the regular schedule for March 10 and 11, as we work to get this event completed and allow the students their well-earned opportunity to compete. I am sure from the micro-view of the many constituents, there will be second guessing and other alternatives suggested, but my job, and that of our office, is to weigh all of the factors and make the best decision we can for the entire state. The one pound growth allowance would have been a problem in the past, but with the emphasis on safe weight management, the wrestlers are required to be at or near their normal weight and should be able to maintain without issues. It will be difficult for our office to manage this event nearly simultaneously with the start of our girls’ basketball tournament, but we have successfully managed overlapping events before and will call on our legions of volunteers and workers to ensure that both events are first class for the students and all involved.”
