  1. Making the Transition from Folkstyle to Freestyle http://www.teamusa.org/~/media/USA_Wrestling/Newsletter%20Content/300x375TB.jpg With most youth and high school wrestling seasons now complete, it's the time of year where many wrestlers will transition from competing in folkstyle to freestyle. "Freestyle wrestling really teaches the fundamentals of the sport," says University of Iowa Head Assistant Coach Terry Brands, a two-time Freestyle World Champion and 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist. "The more skills you master in any style of wrestling, the better wrestler you can become." That's what Teague Moore learned in his wrestling career at Oklahoma State University, competing for legendary head coach John Smith, a six-time freestyle World Champion and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist. Smith’s ability to teach freestyle skills—and incorporate how they crossover into folkstyle—played a huge role in Moore becoming an NCAA champion and three-time All-America wrestler. Now the head coach at American University in Washington, D.C., Moore said: "My freestyle experience and exposure are the only reasons why I succeeded in folkstyle. Without freestyle, I would have been mediocre at best." Understanding the Differences Folkstyle wrestling puts more emphasis on controlling your opponent, while freestyle puts more emphasis on exposure points. The goal from the bottom position in folkstyle wrestling is to get away. The goal from the bottom position in freestyle is to avoid being turned/exposed. In freestyle, the goal is to pin or expose your opponent’s shoulders to the mat. Learning each discipline provides crossover opportunities that can help a wrestler become as complete as possible. "When training in freestyle, an athlete must have total body awareness and control," says Moore. "With proper positioning, a wrestler can execute with minimized exposure to defense. The best executed offense eliminates an opponent’s defense. The best example in wrestling right now is the (Jordan) Burroughs double, it secures a takedown and potentially secures back exposure while eliminating the opponents' quick front headlock defense or crotch lock defense.” Although this is only one example, it can be applied to many other scoring positions. The athlete that trains to execute an offense that completely eliminates their opponents defense will excel in folkstyle because of this laser-like precision offense." What’s more, freestyle wrestling teaches you things you can't get from training folkstyle only, says Dan Tramontozzi, head coach of the New Jersey Wrestling Academy, a wrestling club and training facility that serves wrestlers and teams throughout northern and central parts of the state. Exploiting the Similarities "Training freestyle in the offseason benefits your folkstyle game in many ways," says Tramontozzi. "Wrestling is changing and evolving everyday. I think freestyle training has a lot to do with that. You look at guys like Ben Askren and watch him "funk" and toss guys around after getting shot on. You normally don't learn that in folkstyle wrestling but that is what wrestling has become today. You have to train your body to be comfortable and know what to do in scramble positions and freestyle is a great tool to use. In order to keep up you have to learn freestyle, because that's what the best are doing." And that's what the best have been doing. Moore rattles off a list of names: Cael Sanderson, Jake Varner, Jordan Burroughs, Henry Cejudo, Brandon Slay, Kurt Angle, Tom Brands, Kendall Cross, Kenny Monday, Bruce Baumgartner. These men were all Olympic Gold Medalists. In addition, says Moore: They all wrestled folkstyle, but became legends because of freestyle." "Folkstyle is the style that captures more media attention in our country,” Moore acknowledges, “but moving forward, the champions of folkstyle will be well versed in freestyle wrestling. Learn freestyle and you will learn the best fundamentals for folkstyle." When Brands was wrestling, his focus was on being the best he could during that specific season. During folkstyle season he wanted to be the best folkstyle wrestler. During the offseason, he wanted to be the best freestyler or Greco-Roman wrestler. He advises coaches and wrestlers to take advantage of the opportunity to learn new styles and combine them to be successful. The sport is always evolving and so should a wrestlers training and practice habits. "Training and competing in freestyle wrestling puts you in positions and in experiences you are not in during the folkstyle season," Brands explains. "It helps you deal with different kinds of pressures. It helps develop a new set of skills that maybe your opponent doesn't have. And if he does, it will teach you how to counter different skills that opponent may be using. This is the time of year to work on something new. Freestyle is a great way to advance as a wrestler, become a more complete wrestler." Five tactical benefits freestyle wrestling can provide folkstyle wrestlers -from Teague Moore, head coach at American University 1. Front Head Lock Offense: This position is crucial to a successful freestyle career, if you can score every time you control your opponent’s head, your scoring potential becomes much better. This position is usually taken after defending an opponent’s leg attack (defensive FHL position). The Russians have mastered the offensive FHL by snapping wrists to clear inside ties and snapping collar ties from neutral. 2. Head inside single, from contact: Most youth wrestlers in the U.S. learn from collar and elbow position so it’s a natural offensive leg attack to attempt while clearing the collar. In the freestyle setting the finish to this offense forces a clean and “backside” finish that transitions easily to a leg lace offense. Young wrestlers that learn a quick “swing single to lace” offense will naturally develop a solid folkstyle technique because by it’s very nature the swing single to lace forces you to control an opponent’s hips, which eliminates the typical “funk” defense that is popular in folkstyle. The learned freestyle skill helps to develop a very proficient folkstyle takedown artist. 3. The backstep and backarch: It’s a basic technique for freestyle athletes to learn and should be one of the seven basic skills that every wrestler learns. The headlock, lateral drop, and body lock throws all utilize its skillset but folkstyle doesn’t appear to be emphasizing it with younger wrestlers. An athlete that learns to properly backstep and backarch usually adds a deadly element to their offense in folkstyle, with a five-point move. 4. Bottom offense: Bottom offense in freestyle doesn’t seem to offer much to a folkstyle wrestler, surface, but, in fact, the freestyle bottom position teaches a vital element to the folkstyle wrestler. Bottom freestyle demands a wrestler to learn a position to maintain a strong base. Positioning is not one dimensional in freestyle. A wrestler must learn how to position to defend a gut wrench, which is very similar to defending a tight waist in folkstyle. Defending and moving from an ankle lace attack can quickly teach a folkstyle wrestler how to reposition to defend an ankle ride in folkstyle. Although the bottom position in freestyle appears to happen with little movement, the reality is that it teaches a folkstyle wrestler how to reposition themselves and hold a strong base, which is a key element for younger wrestlers to learn. 5. The top position: Freestyle top position offense teaches a wrestler the importance of hip control. The wrestler on top in freestyle has to expose their opponent’s shoulders to the mat for points, but most of these scoring opportunities are presented after you open the bottom wrestlers hips. In a gut wrench, you must learn to properly lock and drive, but without popping the bottom wrestler’s hips, exposure can remain futile. Another common freestyle technique is the figure-four leg ride, or bent leg turk that allows you to hip your opponent over for exposure. This turn can be done exactly identical in folkstyle so this technique is a great way to transition the technique between both. If a wrestler properly learns how to control an opponent’s hips, cheap tilts, leg rides, and dominance in top position become easily transitioned.

  4. The Top Reasons Why You Won't Wrestle Greco February 18, 2015 / Myrmidon Greco-Roman wrestling has taken a back seat to freestyle wrestling in this country for nearly its entire inception. Now with folkstyle’s popularity growing every day, the Olympic styles (especially Greco) have begun to be marginalized. As a competitor and coach, I find it a chore to try and convince wrestlers coming out fresh from their high school and college seasons to even give the sport a try. I am sure I am not the only one that can attest to this bizarre obtainment from Greco. It almost seems as if there is a spell that has been cast over the wrestling community; one that creates a bad stigma in my eye. Well, I am here to create a list of the top reasons why you won’t wrestle Greco: 1. You are afraid. What? You were expecting more? I hate to break it to you, but that is unmasked truth. Perhaps it might be an over simplified answer, but it is a harsh reality none the less. Every excuse I have heard in the book is just a thinly veiled ruse as to the real innate fear that dwells in your heart and mind. Still not convinced? Very well. I can break it down for every single excuse you have already formulated in your scared little head: “Greco is stupid” Greco is upper body wrestling, half of what you use in folkstyle. Are you telling me half of what you use is stupid? You are just afraid of getting out of your comfort zone. “That’s not how I wrestle.” True but it is the way some other people wrestle, some tough wrestlers. If a guy goes upper body with you, will you be ready to defend that? Or are you are just afraid to be prepared? “I don’t like throwing people.” Greco is not just throws. It is upper body positioning, something you refuse to learn. What you really are saying is you don’t like being thrown. “I’d rather focus on folkstyle or freestyle.” Most developmental tournaments have Greco on the same day as freestyle. You don’t want more matches? You are just afraid to lose to someone in Greco that you can beat in freestyle. “All I do is shoot leg attacks.” …so you must always win, right? Don’t be afraid to learn. “I don’t get it.” …you are afraid to learn new rules. Why were you not too scared to learn folkstyle or freestyle the first time? “The rules are confusing.” See above. You mean to tell me the first time you watched baseball you knew exactly what the hell was going on? “Greco can’t help me get better in folkstyle.” Don’t complain when you get thrown, or have no options when you can’t finish a shot on certain tough guys. You are afraid of cross training. “None of my friends wrestle Greco.” Sorry to pull out the cliché, but would you jump off a bridge if your friends did first? Separate yourself from the pack. You are afraid to be different. “No one wrestle Greco at all.” It is true that Greco has low numbers in this country, but it is huge in Iran and the ex-Soviet Bloc countries. You are afraid to embrace other cultures. “No one good does Greco.” Take that excuse and ask Chael Sonnen, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, or Matt Lindland if Greco helped their UFC careers. You are afraid to be great. “There aren’t any opportunities in Greco.” Besides having two Olympic training centers, there are tons of regional training centers located at various colleges around the country that train in Greco. You are just afraid of your options. “I can’t afford it.” Really? Are you afraid you won’t be able to pay that smart phone bill or your Starbucks? “Greco is gay.” How can you be so flippant and judgmental? If you equate the classic style of wrestling to homo-erotic display then you have more deep seeded issues that you are afraid of. “I am a girl.” Minnesota Storm Cup offers a women’s division. Maybe if more women would compete there would be a higher demand. Are you going to sit there and tell me that you are afraid to be a trailblazer? “I just don’t like Greco.” It’s fine to have a preference, but if you only did everything you liked when you trained you wouldn’t be any good. I hate doing sprints, but I know that I need strong lungs to beat my opponents. You are just afraid to work harder. There countless others that I could go on and on about, but you should get the picture by now. Now I am not saying any of these excuses aren’t legitimate by any stretch of the imagination. All I ask is that you look deep inside yourself admit the truth to yourself: You are afraid you might actually like it.

Official Page http://khsaa.org/021815-state-wrestling-tournament-postponed/ 02/18/15 – State Wrestling Tournament Postponed February 18, 2015 2014-2015 News Releases FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 18, 2015 In the interest of the safety and welfare of our competitors, coaches, workers and officials, and to ensure that participation experience for the student-athletes is optimal, the KHSAA has postponed the State Wrestling Championships, originally scheduled for February 19-21, until March 9-11. “KHSAA State events are large-scale undertakings, and with the expansion of the State Tournament several years ago, we are very limited in options for holding the event,” said Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We absolutely have to be able to put down at least eight mats to get the tournament completed in two days, and that in and of itself limits our options. We are thankful our hosting partners at the Alltech Arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park were able to work out new dates. We tried to work cooperatively with another event that is scheduled for Sunday and rearrange schedules, but that group was unwilling to move, leaving us very few options.” KHSAA Assistant Commissioner Michael Barren, who oversees the sport of Wrestling, added, “we have been able in very short order to rebook the large block of rooms we use at the official headquarters, and reschedule vendors and secure the arena on the first available three-day period for that facility. It was critical in working with the Commissioner that we make this decision as early as possible in the interest of the safety and welfare of our competitors, coaches, workers and officials. We will allow a one pound growth allowance for each of the weight classes in an additional effort to accommodate this postponement.” Tackett stated that a great many options were reviewed before finalizing this move. “These championships are years in the making and scheduling, and it isn’t easy to simply move any of them. I know that Mike (Barren) and his tournament staff will work with the folks at Alltech Arena to get things moved in on March 9, and utilize the regular schedule for March 10 and 11, as we work to get this event completed and allow the students their well-earned opportunity to compete. I am sure from the micro-view of the many constituents, there will be second guessing and other alternatives suggested, but my job, and that of our office, is to weigh all of the factors and make the best decision we can for the entire state. The one pound growth allowance would have been a problem in the past, but with the emphasis on safe weight management, the wrestlers are required to be at or near their normal weight and should be able to maintain without issues. It will be difficult for our office to manage this event nearly simultaneously with the start of our girls’ basketball tournament, but we have successfully managed overlapping events before and will call on our legions of volunteers and workers to ensure that both events are first class for the students and all involved.”

Breathing Issues at the Horse Park

After talking with the Horse Park today to discuss future venues with them for 2016. I brought up the dust issue and was told that it has been discussed with KHSAA and been resolved. they have purchased a mat to put underneath the floor, and was used for the Cheerleading competition without any complaints of dust issues. If this is correct, I think this venue will continue to a great place to wrestle.

Always good to hear great thing about Kyle. Looking forward to being able to ask for him at the national office and he can make a big trip to KY to help with a training camp for our FARGO team.
  19. Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, CO October 16 – 19, 2014 KY USA Wrestling will pay the air fare for two coaches to attend this clinic. . The USA Wrestling Fall Coaches Clinic is a select group of 45 coaches selected by state USA Wrestling organizations. Participants are provided room and board at the OTC for $150. There is an optional coach’s packet that includes a USA Wrestling shirt and complete clinic video set for an additional $75. Each individual (or state) is responsible for all transportation expenses. Additional coaches (beyond the 45 OTC residents) wishing to attend may do so at their own expense (transportation, meals and housing). This is an opportunity to work first hand with the USA Wrestling National Staff and with the staff specialists from the US Olympic Training Center. The clinic is designed to share the most current training concepts with USA Wrestling’s member coaches. It is an excellent opportunity for coaches to live the technical and tactical training used to develop our elite World and Olympic level athletes. This clinic offers credit toward either a Bronze Certification (with a test score of 80% or better) or Silver Coaches College attendance for coaches who qualify. 2014 USA Wrestling Fall Coaches Clinic.pdf

    Fargo Recap

Great recap Jay. Our continued goal With KY USAW is to motivate our KY coaches to take the leap into FS/GR so they in turn will teach more of these great styles to there teams and up their individual wrestling skills and make a better Folkstyle wrestler. In return, making more AA's for their team and Kentucky. It has been a slow process, but we are getting some great coaches onboard that have the same ideas and many suggestions.
