Im curious about the relationship of the Ervin boys. How is Brock related to Mitch, Caleb and others? Just wondering how big he might get, I think Mitch finished out at 160lbs, doesnt sound like Brock will get that big considering where hes at now as a 10th grader. I think hes as much fun to watch as any KY kid wrestling today. Always shows a little funk in his style that you dont see out of many KY wrestlers. Seems to be aggresive at the whistle and doesnt stop until the match is decided.

So what are some ideas on getting more kids involved. Coach Anderson from Seneca was a great example of getting kids to come out every year and developing competitive wrestlers in just the 4 years of high school. He ran open mats during the spring that were open to all, seems like every kid in town had a relationship with him just from open mats. He would help everyone and not just his own kids I think it definitely helps if the Coach is in the school system, what are some other ideas for getting more kids involved in the sport?

I just wanted to comment how impressed I was with Garth Yenter. I had not seen him wrestle much, but thought he looked huge for his weight and looked very solid during his match. He pinned and teched his way to the finals and then beat a good wrestler in Paden.

Indiana State Tourney was yesterday too. The video is still available, not sure for how long, but it is an excellent production and example of how to televise and operate a state finals. Great footage of Jason Tsirtsis, fantastic high school wrestler. http://www.livestream.com/ihsaa

Congrats to John and his family and good luck in the future!

Overall it sounds like the KY Tourney was a big success. Congrats to all the kids on a great season. It's great for us who couldnt attend to be able to watch on the net. So, I can only comment on what it looked like on the video. But it looked like they needed a big mat light and different covering for the floor. Overall the wrestling seems to continue to improve each year, congrats to all! I'm guessing the backpack if full of medals?

To get back on track a little, Jordans summer camp room has a ton of KY state champs listed as having attended his camps. Basically a Who's Who of KY State Champs

Who has Union lost in the Quarters?

That is a cool post GSP, could a Larue with 8 left in the Championship Bracket pull it out? I've heard people talk about how important it is for the team for the kids to wrestle the whole tournament and not to give up once they get knocked out of the Championship bracket. A team with alot of medalist can outscore a team with a few champions most of the time. Im predicting a dog fight between Union, Campbell and Larue in that order

Eliminating Middle School Wrestlers from High School teams

Grappler, I hear what your saying and I applaud you for coaching and doing all you do. But I still have a hard time being complacent about the HS numbers being insufficient. If theres no one to fill a spot I can see a MS wrestler filling a spot but I still feel if theres a HS kids willing, he should get the nod after all it is a HS team. I also think the same rules, all rules should apply to a MS wrestler as the HS wrestler, grades, boudaries, transfer rules, etc..... -

I will concede that for some schools, allowing both programs to be as one is the only way to have a program, but IMO the 1st option to fill the HS spot is any HS wrestler willing to fill it. -

Isn't this the most obvious reason not to allow MS in HS. I think the win at all cost has distorted some views about high school athletics. It shouldnt depend on who's better, it is a HS team to benefit the students of the HS. If there is a HS wrestler that is willing to participate there should be no question. This is not college nor professional its high school athletics to support the kids not the best at any cost. -

Raider, I agree with some of your points and your programs as well as Ranger's are good programs, but I still question how the numbers are affected adversely or favorably by allowing MS to wrestle HS. The MS kids can still wrestle at their own level, if anything I would argue that programs would lose more HS kids who get beat by a MS wrestler and give up the sport. Microcosm of real life? Sounds good but cmon give me a break, this is high school wrestling, its a sport not a life struggle, dont take it so serious. Regardless of everyone's own personal stance, KY is one if of the few if not the only state allowing MS kids to participate at the HS levels. I will respectfully continue to agree to disagree. -

Remember I said some would scream. You both make solid arguments and I believe in time MS wrestlers in your programs HS ranks will diminish and be eliminated by a solid group of HS kids who have risen through the ranks and wont be displaced by MS kids outwrestling them. Lets face it the only reason 95% of MS kids are wrestling in HS are because the HS ranks are missing a weight class or because the HS kid has little to no experience and the MS kid has learned to wrestle already. I say the HS kid needs to learn to wrestle in HS more than the MS needs to be wrestling in HS. It shouldnt always be about the putting the best team on the mat at all cost. -

I think the Jefferson County rule was more geared at other sports where coaches were sitting HS aged kids to give up and coming MS kids more playing time to benefit the team down the road. The example I'm thinking of is girls softball, I know of one instance where SR's were made to sit to play MS kids to try and develop their talent, the team was terrible all year long. I have never supported MS wrestling HS and I know some will scream about this comment but IMO it makes it to easy to give up on getting the HS kids to participate. The state needs more HS kids participating in sports to benefit from the acitivities. Its not just about how good the kids are but what the kids get out of the participation of the sport. Instead of allowing MS kids, recruit harder for HS kids. Give them reason to play such as academic credts the same as gym and instead of gym class, to participate in a sport. -
Sorry Coach I new it was close

When and where is the Region 6 tournament and expected time for Finals?
-
Seems futile to keep arguing this, so heres a question moving forward. Where will the Meyers be wrestling next year?
-
The KHSAA rules the athletes are eligible or not, its up to the Coach as to whether the Athlete can even join the team this late in the season or compete in place of some a starter.
-
Oops, just noticed it said for Coaches only, Im not a Coach, just bored at work. But if I were a Coach, see above!
-
Lots of variables but most teams I know of say come back next year. Rules: Depends on the rules of the program before the season. If a coach has established a last day to join the wrestling team, then its up the coach. # of Kids: But realistically if you have a full room of kids, maybe even 2 - 3 kids deep at each weight (i know its crazy but some teams do have full Varsity, JV and Freshman programs), then I tell him to come back next year. Maybe tell him he can be the Team Equipment Manager or help with stats, to get a feel for the sport and then if he shows initiative and the coach feels so inclined let him practice with the team. But hey if theres no rules on the timing of coming out and your open at the kids weight let him join the team. But if your not open at that weight and you've wrestled 75-85% of your competition, I would have to be loyal to my boy thats been there all year.
