    coaching

Coach Hall at Fern Creek has done a good job! He has turned out some very good wrestlers and also helped a lot of kids off the mat too and teaches them alot more than just wrestling!
  3. They were fun to watch, I thought Robt. Smith wrestled well! He looked like he has been hitting the weights hard, stronger than ever! Jarius Murton did well had a tough match that he pulled out at the end! Thanks again for a fun day! Good luck this season!
  4. I want to thank Coach James for a great camp yesterday. The format worked out well, the clinics were good and the wrestle offs were very entertaining. The turnout was a good mix of high school and middle school kids who really had a good time learning from the college wrestlers. Good luck to the Tiger Wrestlers and thanks for spending so much time with the kids!

House Joint Resolution 203 passed for Wrestling

Which State School will be the first to add Wrestling? WKY EKU - (great candidate) NKY Murray Morehead UK - (ACC has wrestling why not SEC) UL - (cant believe the Big East doesnt have wrestling) KY State Who have I missed? Sounds like we have the politicians interested in supporting it now we need a State School to make it happen. How do we go about this KDSMIth? Should we now start a letter writing campaign?

    Imagine DreAM College Matches

Magicbone, I replied to your other post so I will reply here too: Cooper vs Murton Murtons a Frosh while Cooper has had some success already. My pick is Cooper beats Murton in the newly formed KY Collegiate championships in overtime. They both go on to become 2X NCAA All Americans during their careers and Hall of Fame Coaches in KY. Cooper starts his own team of just family members called the "Super Coopers". Murton coaches an all star team with his brother called "J&J Wrestling". Smith vs Ruschelle Smith is to weak from losing so much weight to wrestle Ruschelle and gets beat 12-8. Smith does hit a headlock and scores some points but Kyle gets his legs in and tires out the 125lb Smith who hasnt eaten in a week. Bradbury vs Davis Bradbury uses his incredible speed and stamina and shoots over 100 times during this match and sets a NCAA record for shots taken. Davis using his incredible strength and intelligence and only gives up 1 takedown to Bradbury's over 100 shots. Davis wins when Bradbury is DQ'd for wearing an illegal singlet. Braima vs Robinette I havent seen these two wrestle before but just knowing that they are two good ole KY boys, I know it will be one helluva match!! Obviously I have no idea who would win, just got bored on a Saturday waiting for the season to start up. I do know a couple of these kids and hope they wont take offense at these predictions, I only wish them all the best!

    College Wrestlers

Magicbone, We are planning on bringing down a few from Fern Creek, not sure how many yet. Improvements, you may be asking the wrong crowd that question. I'm not sure us high school folk would be a good source of information in that area, the KY kids at Campbellsville are obviously good enough to be there so they probably know a lot more about it than most of us. My only advise would be to WIN, seems to make any other problems go away. You tell me whos looking good down there? What is the big difference between HS and College?
  8. The Louisville Courier Journal published a small article on the preseason rankings for Wrestling. I am encouraged that the sport is receiving this exposure. My compliments to the CJ and the Rankings Coordinator for getting this information published. I hope to see more rankings in papers with each and every update. Did this information get published in any other newspapers around the state? It will help the sport for more people to see the rankings. I hope all teams do a good job of getting their results and schedules reported to the newspapers for publication. Does anyone know of any templates to be used when reporting results to the newpapers for duals and or tournaments?

CJ Article - Reporting Results and Schedules

It was in the Courier Journal Friday.
  10. This camp is coming up 10/29, it should be a good time and a good bargain as well! $30 to attend 2 technique sessions, a tshirt and lunch and then free attendance to watch the wrestle offs for the varsity spots. Very reasonable! Coach James is hoping for a good turnout. He has been very supportive of wrestling within the state. This is a good chance for middle and high school wrestlers to get a glimpse of wrestling at a higher level. Sounds like a good number of KY kids wrestling for spots in the lineup.
  11. Indiana University Assistant Coach and Real Pro Wrestler, Mike Mena will be conducting a camp at Lafayette High School on Oct 29th. See the link for all the details. http://eteamz.active.com/fcthswrestling/handouts/

    Big vs little schools

Woodford and anyone who knows anything about OH HS wrestling knows theres no shame in losing to Eastwood. The Cubberly boys are some tough kids and that team is one of the best in the midwest.

    Youth Tournaments

Ive taken my son to these for the past 4 years. I really like these tournaments, IMO the spring is one of the best tournaments in the country. Great competition and extremely well ran. The format is a little different, basic folkstyle, but one 3 minute period, basically a take down tournament. If you go out of bounds you start in neutral, if you dont turn a man in 10-20 seconds your come back to neutral. The spring (last weekend in April) has the best competition and more kids, 3500+ at the Columbus Convention Center, kids from California to New Jersey for this one. The spring tourney is billed as the largest one day wrestling tournament in the world. The fall is at a high school, I think its Winchester Canal and its much smaller but still good quality kids from OH, MI and midwest states. Both of these tourneys will get you in and out in half a day, no 45 min waits between matches, when your bout is ready to go, you better be ready. It can be tough but its the same for everyone. One of the wrestling websites ranked the Spring TofC as one of the top 5 tournaments in the country. The first few years my son was lucky to get more than 2 matches. Now after 3-4 years, hes starting to place, 2-2nd place and one 7th place finish, these are usually 50 man brackets in the spring. Hes very proud of every medal from these tournaments because the competition is the best, always national finalist at this spring tourney.

    Any Divison 1 Prospects

I think everyone is missing the point that D1 is not just Big Ten and Big 12 schools. Theres plenty of D1 schools our kids could hook up with and wrestle their way to a spot. D1 or D2 or any level, I am saying that with a full understanding that the programs are hard and beyond what most have experienced at high school. But I think the KY kids would grow with the experience like any other kids and rise to the occassion. I'm not saying they would walk in and get a varsity spot and win an NCAA Championship their freshman year. But over the course of 3-5 years, I do believe that if they have the desire and committment, the same as with most successful high school wrestlers, they could learn to wrestle competitively and have a rewarding and successful collegiate career. Im sure most kids thought the high school wrestling room was tough anc crazy when they started, no different in college. One of the biggest factors is heart and how bad they want to do it. I guess I have to ask the people who have commented on this post negatively about KY kids wrestling in college if they have any personal experience with collegiate wrestling and how they survived it? Then compare their high school success to some of the kids that are being criticized. Point being that if they survived and they arent 2x or 3x state champs then the current 2x and 3x champs and nationally competitive kids should do ok. Good example is Knable at IU, he was a 4x KY State champ. He has worked hard and is seeing some varsity time for a good IU squad and its his 3rd year, I think. What other KY kids are wrestling in college?

I think Jacob Murton is one of the top kids at his optimal weight and has the skills to wrestle with any D1. Just compare Murton to some of the kids that are signing with D1 and his credentials stand up very well. I still think some of the other top KY kids could wrestle with some D1 if they had the desire but doubt that they will pursue it. BAP, I dont doubt what you say about the D1 rooms being crazy and tough. Where do you wrestle?

Heres your D1 schools with wrestling, I think a few of our kids are good enough to make the squad but doubt many will be found at these schools come next wrestling season. Grapplin, Good post, points well taken. I just dont like to hear kids called names when it only applies to the few and not the majority who are trying to better themselves through participation or graduation. I also want to point out that alot of D2 and smaller schools are better academically than the larger D1 schools. Many of the D2, D3 schools are private schools with much higher standards than the large D1 schools with 10,000+ students. Many kids actually prefer the smaller schools because of the lower professor to student ratios and unique aspects smaller schools can provide versus the larger campuses where kids can easily get lost in the crowd. Some athletes actually prefer the smaller D2/D3 campuses and elect to attend those schools by choice not because they cant get accepted at D1. This is especially true in KY for wrestling where the only programs are good quality schools but not D1.

Recruiting in wrestling is alot like any other sport, the high school season doesnt have the importance it used to have. Its like any other sport (except football) the recruiting is done during the "Open Season". Thats when coaches can really get out and watch kids compete against one another on a national scale, which is what recruiting is all about, trying to lure the best kids (athletically and academically) to their school. Its not about raw talent its about getting the kids most likely to succeed on the mat and in the class room to their schools. They all have limited monies available to invest, so its a calculated risk on their investment. Full rides are very rare, consider the fact that schools charge $15K-$30K for a year of tuition depending on the school and then theres housing, food, etc...... A four year full ride is a big total investment, you do the math 4 X $. Coaches are judged not just on wins and losses but also on how the limited monies available are allocated which usually reflects heavily in their wins and losses. I have rambled, but my point is this, some of the KY kids will undoubtedly recieve offers from all types of schools, but mostly they will be partial offers that will not enable the kids to realistically consider the school because of the overall expenses associated with a college education. This is even more of an issue with KY kids because they are forced with out of state tuition rates because their are no D1 schools in KY offering wrestling. To the guy calling JC kids at Cincy "MORONS", how bout a reality check! These kids are just trying to survive. Alot of these kids didnt have alot to begin with, so for them to play at a D1 is awesome. If UC didnt like the money from basketball they would have changed a long time ago. If you had a chance to play at a big time school for a big time coach who has turned out quite a few millionaires in his career, what would you do. Alot of those kids are making good money and have a stable life because of the time Huggins gave them at UC. They may not have graduated but they have the experience and that can be all the difference for alot of these kids. It can happen for KY kids, and I hope they all get opportunities to further their wrestling career in college. But they really need to hit the books hard and attend off season nationals to get the most recognition.

    Small School State Duals

I still dont understand why the small schools wont be participating in the KY State Duals. I thought the duals was a tournament endorsed by the KWCA and not the KHSAA. As I understand it, the coaches have voted to have a small schools dual tournament. How does this affect the KWCA KY State Duals? How can we get clairification on some of these changes? What is the criteria for determining small and large schools? Which is the criteria used for inviting teams to either of the tournaments? Will the original KWCA KY State Duals be only for schools not designated as small schools or will it include all schools, large and small to ensure a better quality tournament? Are invitations based on prior years performance or current year? When are the invititaions sent out? When are the tournaments? I have heard that small school duals are set for Larue, where is the other tournament?

    Small School State Duals

Why cant they do the small school thing and get it out of the way and then compete in the KY State Duals too, the way its set up already! If the small schools dont compete in the KHSAA Duals will they reduce the number of teams invited to KHSAA Duals?

I think a big tournament and 2-3 duals a week year round is stretching it a little, thats like the kid who practiced in his sleep, sounds like an urban legend, wrestling style, haha! I dont there are any tourneys in IN or Ohio right now. I cant think of any until Fall TofC in Oct. If you know of any please let us know, we would like to go.

I disagree, our better programs train very effectively and probably use some of the same methods that are used in their better programs. Ky has good and bad programs as does Ohio. We have some very dedicated coaches who have wrestled and trained all over the country and utilize the best concepts from all over. I agree Ohio is a good state for wrestling, but KY can, does and has had good wrestlers too!
