    M.S. wrestling in H.S. ?

I think high school aged kids wrestle college age kids during the Midlands Tournament. I personally dont like the idea of MS wrestling HS. It really just seems to be a by product of the state having poor high school programs that makes it practical anyway. It seems to work in KY and over time if the sport continues to grow will be diminished with the improvement of HS wrestling
  7. So do I understand this correctly; If an IN HS team is wrestling in KY and a MS wrestler is wrestling for a KY Team and matches up against an IN wrestler, the IN wrestler is not allowed to wrestle him because he is Middle School aged. Sounds like all coaches should bring Birth Certificates and Legal counsel to tournaments this season, jk

    KHSAA State Tournament

I always thought of the State Tournament for any state as really beginning with sectionals or regions or what ever you want to call the initial qualifying meet. Everyone gets a chance to stand on the podium, if you make it to the final state meet you at least earned the right to attend by beating someone. Sure some paths are easier than others, but isnt the idea for kids to grow and learn through hard work and achievement? I think our current format accomplishes those things. But I admit that I too sometimes wish it wasnt 3 days, thats a long time and lots of weigh ins, but overall I think it works well.

Who was the best KY high school wrestler in the past decade?

Lets set the record straight, not because of this post about whos the best, but because so many people on here dont know what happened to John Wolsiefer. He started his senior year and blew out his ankle during the championship match of the King of the Bluegrass tournament, (early Dec). He finished the match with a win and the MOW for the tournament, his record was 14-0. Unfortunately he had to sit out a few weeks and when ready to get back on the mat during practice he blew out his ankle again. He missed his grades at the semester turn and was ineligible, that was the end of his high school career. A sad end to a great high school career. There's noone to blame and no excuses. Since he couldnt finish his season he fell out of the wrestling mode and never went back. I more than anyone wish he would have found his way back to the mat but it hasnt worked out that way. Who is the best in the past decade is an argument that will never be resolved, I'm just proud that Kentucky wrestling has improved to the point we have so many great wrestlers to argue about being the best.

Who was the best KY high school wrestler in the past decade?

I alway thought Richard Starks was a sure win during his matches. He is having great college career too! He led his team to how many state titles while winning a few himself. I also really enjoyed watching Derek Scott, SO. I think he was 2 or 3 time champ. I saw him wrestle a lot, very aggressive, no stopping, very tenacious.

Do teams send wrestlers with their JV coach for this if their Varsity is wrestling somewhere else?

    Best in the State

It's great there are so many worthy candidates this year. I would have to give the preseason nod to a senior. They are deserving because they have been wrestling at a high level for a number of years now. Let the under classman prove themselves with another year and then ask the same question. It's not as important to be the best during preseason as it is at the end of the season. I like Hitchings, Bradbury and Johnson in no particular order.

    Discussion: Fargo & State

I think the State Title would provide more attention for the individual due to the fact most people in and out of wrestling circles can relate to a state title but few people know what the tournament in Fargo is about. So I think the State Title could be the most rewarding because it would be accomplished in front of all the local friends and competitors. I'm not saying to AA would not be rewarding just that it doesn't carry the same type of recognition. I would like to point out how difficult it is for a wrestler from KY to AA in any national event but especially in Greco or Freestyle. The styles of wrestling such as FS or Greco are just enough different that a good Folkstyle wrestler can compete in either style and do very well. But it becomes increasingly difficult to win against the better wrestlers because they typically have more experience and better training at the particular style. So my point is the good folkstyle wrestlers with little experience at FS or Greco can hold their own in FS or Greco against the average to good wrestler. However to beat the elite is another story. The elite in FS and Greco possess superior skills in the other styles and that becomes the difference, I thought this to be especially true in Greco. Theres a skill level in each style that seperates the best from the rest. The KY kids that have done well at Fargo are to be commended because it really is an exceptional accomplishment to survive as long in the tourney as they have. I think its the lack of special training in the particular style that keeps our kids from attaining the AA status.

    Fargo 2009

The bracket can be confusing and sometimes not completely fair. The bye can be the difference sometimes. Some kids get a bye early and some dont get one until very late or if they dont survive not at all. If I look at the 112 correctly Elmore,Ill (Fahy's next opponent) is 6-1 with no byes, tough draw! Fahy, Elmore IL, and Hacker CO, all have one loss. Fahy and Elmore face each other next, Hacker has Friedman who is undefeated. How will they determine the 4th place if Hacker loses? Would Hacker wrestle the loser of the Fahy/Elmore match to determine 4th place?

Looks like John and his next opponent both wrestled Kraft, VA. Fahy 6-0, 6-0 compared to McKinley 4-0, 7-4. Ill take Fahy, good luck John!

    Weights

Don't cut weight, lose any excess weight but dont cut for the sake of cutting to get to a lower weight class, it will only make you weaker and miserable. Get strong, lean and mean and wrestle your normal weight.

    Realignment and State Duals Update

In other sports I remember it working like this, you could coach your own son or daughter in a team sport, but I think there is still a dead period that coaches arent allowed to be around any of their own players. I think in wrestling you could manage the group as a team and allow you to coach the entire group as long as they are on the same team as your son or daughter. When you say you dont think wrestling coaches are not fanatical like other sports, I tend to agree. But I have seen fanatical wrestling coaches too and it only takes one fanatical coach and the situation changes and requires the kind of rule that is in place now. I agree with the rule for the reason it was intended, but I too would like to see it amended. But even as it is now coaches find ways around it, they coach everyone but their own kids and ask other coaches to help with their kids. Kentucky just really suffers because there aren't enough qualified coaches for the high schools let alone for off season wrestling. So when a qualified HS Coach is willing to go the extra mile for off season coaching and then isnt allowed to work with his own kids and there is no other qualified coaches to step up, it makes it bad. I dont know what the answer is but I hope they figure something out!
