    Youth Wrestling in High School

The evidence that maturity makes a difference, is made in the fact that no middle school wrestlers placed above 120lbs. I know there are advantages to the current system because youth wrestlers are eligible to wrestle any high school wrestler in practice as well. Without that ability, I do think it would hurt wrestling in our state overall. However, if you only take away 7th graders wrestling in tournaments and leave the possibility of practicing, I don't think it would affect the overall results at all. I believe the overall increased talent is mostly based on the amazing job the youth wrestling association has been doing. The ability to wrestle in practice with high school kids, is another factor. I think there is a risk when 7th graders are wrestling seniors (there is a difference in being 12 and 18 years old). This is crossing 3 age groups in USA Wrestling. Although they weigh the same, the maturity level is completely different. I think like football, maturity has a huge impact on safety. Which is the major point I am trying to make, I think 7th graders are at risk. Perhaps there is no data to back that up though, but I think it's interesting that no middle school wrestlers placed above 120 lbs. Keep in mind our youth wrestling team has been doing the best it has ever performed in national tournaments in recent years and still none placed above 120 lbs. I think we will continue to see less and less middle school wrestlers place at the high school level, especially with the recent weight change and better talent pool overall. I'm not saying we need to do this "now", this is just a discussion and I like to stir the pot.

    2012-2013 State tournament.

Kids used to get hurt all the time over the years it was at Frankfort simply because it was so cramped. They would run into railings, stairs, score tables, other mats... People had to walk on the corners of the mats to get to their seat most of the time. Come on peeps.... The dungeon is outdated and outgrown.

For the majority of coaches in the state, communication on the internet doesn't go much further than email. Put there are some things in the works.

    Stieber Oliver

The difference in Stieber's attempted takedowns in the first is reaction time. I think Oliver's takedown at the end was control, Stieber could only hold on (to nothing).
  12. I'd love to see some more fan photos and videos on the KentuckyWrestling.com facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/kywrestling/photos I saw lots of people recording this year with ipads and phones but haven't seen any posted. Anyone can submit, you just have to be a fan!
  13. Does anyone know of a wrestler winning a state title in KY, then transferring to another school and repeating?

Thanks coach, would like to see the Blue Raider Blog come back
  15. With the weight changes this year, you basically lost a weight class in 140. 135 became 138, and 140 was lost. All weights were shifted a little, but I feel that's the major result. I think John Fahy and Paul Hamilton would have split weight classes if this were the case and I think Paul Hamilton he would have been state champion. With the old weight classes, I think 195 Bobby Bryant would have had to wrestle Bernard Ray or Austin Myers, and I didn't get to watch Bryant wrestle, so I can't comment on that. (Although Ray and Myers were both outstanding). Obviously what-ifs... but it's interesting to think about the possible result.

    Multiple State tournaments

Anyone can start their own league, but I think the league we have now is very organized. I don't see any benefit to adding new leagues with their own state qualification. Until there is a need, it won't happen. Anyone can host a tournament so I don't see any benefit that would ever be gained by fragmenting the league we have for youth now. Do we need more tournaments? I think so, and I think we should have tournaments that involve more out of state competition because the pool in-state is so small compared to others.
  17. It was on track until someone threw a bone. I really wanted to know for my records, not for starting a fire.

Who lucked out with the weight change this year?

103 became 106? Change from 112 to 113. I guess MAYBE some of the 103 lbs were able to get down to 106 because of the extra three pounds. Maybe they would have been 113's.
