I am not sure how many of you remember a wrestler we had a Holmes in 2014 Antonio McCloud. He placed at MS state in 2014. This weekend he finished his High School year on top. With a pin in his semi final match and a Major decision 13-3 in the finals. Antonio is one of those gifted athletes a coach love to have because he works hard and listens had a hard. We at Homes are proud to have Coached him in the beginning and very proud of the young man he has become. Congratulations Champ.Below is a link to the news article. @bulldogleader

They should compete with other under sized kids. You can’t just maintain a class where you need 8th graders to fill out a bracket.
How can you say this? We have several 10th, 11th and 12th in 106 this yaer. Look how they stack against the 8th and 9th graders. How would those guys fair in a heavier weight class. If anything 106 is showing we are doing something right on the middle school level. The smaller kids are getting Stronger and more technical. I find the 106lbers to be a fun match to watch.

1 hour ago, 119Rider said:I like the idea of proposed alignment with college. I would drop the 106 lb class though and make it 110. Get rid of 113 for a 118 weight then into the 20's. You still have a lower weight for the little guys and you give older wrestlers more of an opportunity to fill that weight. Best of both worlds.
The problem is if you get rid of 106 how many kids do we lose state wide? there are several who barely weigh 80 lbs already wrestling 106 now add another 4 pounds? You may think only 4 lbs but for a little guy 4 lbs is like 20 lbs to a 160, it would be like a ton. if anything add a class in some of the heavier areas

When I wrestled we had 167, 185 and hwt max 250

I did not know that there was a middle school level at the Youth state. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one. When GOO Jr. wrestled only 6th and lower wrestled at Youth state. But since there is I would agree that a MIDDLE SCHOOL kid that goes to the state tourney should not wrestle in the Youth state. If they are elementary kids wrestling middle school then they should be allowed to wrestle at Youth state regardless of there placement or lack of at the middle school state.
I would AGREE except the the youth state tournament is first broken by birth year. An 8th grader based on DOB should never wrestle a 6th grader. In some areas a 7th or 8th grade 1st year wrestler may automatically default to the MS state tournament and go 2 and out. it's cases like this that we a doing a disservice to our kids by not allowing them to compete at youth state. The old way of top 8 at MS were disqualified from youth was perfect. I say as much mat time we can give our kids the more we grow as a sport. IMHO

Lets fix the mindset 1st then we can fix the venue. Because Altech is NOT the best place to hold it.
The only way to fix the mindset is to get the KHSAA Control Board to actually care about the sport and the kids.Below are the members of the KHSAA Wrestling advisory committee, these are the people who can make or break our sport. We need change we need to gain their attention and support. They have to be willing to take new ideas and concerns to the Control Board.

Bob Davis, Meade County, Coach, 2020
James Kraeszig, St. Xavier, Coach, 2019

I don't disagree, but it is up to us as coaches and parents to grow our sport and prove our value to the KHSAA. We are making great strides on the youth and middle school levels hopefully those will carry over to the next level as our kids improve and the sport keeps growing.

DrBaker. KHSSA does not care if its not football or basketball. I will tell you that KFWC has several influential coaches and admins on here. What is said about the MS and Youth is heard very clearly.

Hey guys,
I am doing some research into the history of Holmes Ms State team standings qualifiers, placers and our 2 champs. Th farthest back I have found is 2014. Does anyone have access to these? If so could or would you share them with me. Our program started at Holmes MS in 2008-2009 season.

Coach,
DaShaun said he is in for 220. May I suggest you offer 275 to Dillon Wayne as he was HWT runner up and weighs right at 240. I think he would represent Team Ky well.

Kentucky USA Wrestling is paying $850 for a team entry into the Middle School National Duals in Danville Illinois on March 23rd thru 25th. Efren is putting together the Team gear which will match the Finals shorts given out at State. I have a block of hotel rooms already outside of Danville at a cost of $100 per night. I’m hoping that we will have a coaching staff of Coach Moore (WV) Coach Kinley(Madison Central) Coach Goss(Woodford) Coach Vlach and Coach Raney(McCracken) , Coach Messerly and myself(Ryle) all apart and helping out since their sons qualified. We will set up a couple practices either together or a couple different locations due to teams being in different parts of the state. The goal is to create a great experience for these wrestlers to represent Kentucky on a National level and build some friendships with other team members.

That's because was just a Beast. Off the mat a big teddy bear. Still our only HS State champ. but hopefully he will have company soon.

Nkawtg,
If we cut the DEAD brackets as you call them, that is like cutting off our nose to spite our face. As i add the numbers there are 167 wrestlers at 107# at the state level that would leave wrestling and go to other sports. That does not count the other wrestlers in the state at that weight class. So do we want to grow our sport or kill it? those 167 plus kids will grow up to have kids who will probably wrestle and then they start coaching the next generation. This is how we grow. If we start eliminating opportunities for kids to wrestle we start eliminating our ability to grow.
