  1. In our case we are just trying to manage our first year of wrestling year round only vs spring wrestling and hoping right into football. We will take any advice we can get and do our best to get our wrestler out there competin

Be prepared for the UWW Cadet Freestyle Tournament in Akron. It's a miniature version of Fargo. Many of the best guys in the country are typically there.

  2. This is from themat.com. It may only be true for certain age divisions. I'm not sure.

"Please be aware that wrestlers are not allowed to DROP in weight class from the regional to the nationals. Whatever weight class the wrestler weigh-ins at for the regional (not necessarily competes at, but what the scale actually reads) is the lowest weight class the wrestler is eligible to compete at for the nationals."

The above info is for the Kids Nationals. For Cadet and Junior Regionals, I believe weight class options are controlled at the State level. I know in Ohio, you can choose any weight class at Fargo if you qualify via a Regional. Also, new this year, the top 4 at Regionals qualify for Fargo, not the top 3 as in the past.

I think the flexibility on picking a weight class is because Regional qualifiers don't count against the fixed numbers that each State is allowed, so a Regional qualifier can't knock out a wrestler that qualified at the state level because the weight class is full, they are just added on as extra wrestlers.

  3. I'm not a doctor but have been through this before:

If the Meniscus tear occurs towards the edge of the meniscus, they trim the cartilage and you're back in a few days. If the tear is towards the middle, where there is more blood flow, they stitch it up to heal the tear. You're off  for 8 weeks while it heals. The knee has a brace that keeps the leg straight. I think you can bear weight as long as the leg is straight.

The meniscus provides some padding in the middle of the knee joint but not really stability, so when you return, your knee joint should be sound, other than weakness from not using it for 8 weeks. Probably no more likely to re-injure than before the original tear.

Again, I'm not a doctor, I just listened closely during a similar experience.

Also - I would think it's up to you and you're kid as to whether he returns (assuming clearance from the doctor). If he can get in shape and win a wrestle off that's his choice.

  4. They still have attendance zones. If you don't live in their school district, you are required to pay tuition. They are not like a perocial school with no defined zone. And if you enroll after you have begun your highschool eligability, you are subject to a year of ineligability, without a bonified change of address to their district.

I like to just read this forum, but I had to get a login to correct this. In Ohio, if a public school has open enrollment, there is no tuition required to open enroll in that school. Sometimes the open enrollment is limited to adjacent school districts, sometimes it's the whole state. The open enrollment could also be limited due to capacity at the school, but if you are accepted, there is no tuition.

Also, starting this year, if you transfer or open enroll in a new school once you have started high school, you only have to sit out 1/2 of the regular season contests in any sport that you participated in the prior year. You are immediately eligible for any sport that you did not participate in the prior year.
