  1. This question reminds of the debate a generation ago. I'm not sure when it ended, sometime in the late 1980s I think, but the DII and DIII national champs and AAs were allowed to compete in the NCAA DI national tournament. Most failed to reach AA status at the DI level but a few dominated--anyone heard of Carleton Haselrig for Pitt-Johnstown? The NCAA disallowed in part because of fairness issues. The lower division wrestlers didn't have the grind, it was argued, during the season and were more fresh in March.

I'm not saying any of that applies to middle school kids. I just believe that a kid should be a kid and worry about high school championships when he's actually in high school. I don't begrudge any kid or his coach/parents who wrestles up. I can't help but think of Felipe Martinez who was virtually burned out in many folks' opinions by his senior year.

  2. I guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm against it. We're really only talking about the first few weight classes anyway though.

KHSAA is the Kentucky HIGH SCHOOL Athletic Association. To me that means a kid should be in HS to compete. Average high schoolers have their hands full and don't need to be competing against the stud middle schoolers. On the other hand, stud middle schoolers often are not mature enough emotionally to handle the stressors of hs sports whether it's from their coach, family, or self induced.

The Mark Hall example is extreme, but that shouldn't be able to happen. 4 years of competition in HS is sufficient in my opinion

  3. I think it's pretty classless to drag these boy's names into a post obviously written to slam Coach Brown. Nothing good for Trinity, Coach Brown, the boys, and especially wrestling in general comes from this. Standup should be a gentleman and apologize. Take your issue to the man and not on a board where kids read.

I'm proud if the youth team at the Shamrock Club. We've had great support from Coach Brown and he's as fine a man and coach as anyone in Kentucky wrestling. When I grew up many said the same kinds of things about Lakewood St Edward and their program.

I hope Standup takes some time to self reflect before shooting off again.

  4. No, I think he does. There is a definite anti-Smith bias out there. Has something to do with why Iowa and Okie State don't get along.

What the Iowa fans did in booing Dake was inexcusable. What he did in response was priceless.

Right call in the Stieber match. Oliver is excellent and will be back though.

  5. Thankyou, Mpire. It was good having Austin with us this weekend. I've said this before, but he is an awesome young man. He and Joe clowned all weekend, ate good and basically giggled all weekend. Your strength drills Joe did with you all summer absolutely helped him get where he is. As any Dad knows... our kids don't always want to listen to us. But, put them at a first rate fighting/lifting gym with a bunch of other studs and you training them and you will see results! Thanks again for letting Austin join us this weekend, it was a pleasure having him.

249lb finalist? That kid he beat was a giant. Awesome match.

  6. I forgot one. Dunyasha "Tubbo" Yetts did it. Picture a wicked fast 5'8" 185 lb rb and a extremely string and ripped 150 lb wrestler. He played/wrestled at Purdue in the early 1990s before transferring to tOSU and finishing 3rd at the NCAAs in 1995.

He subsequently became a sports agent and swindled Antoine Winfield and some others out of millions. He did time and returned to Steubenville and was coaching wrestling as a felon. He violated parole and is now back in prison.

The moral of the story is to stick to one sport and study!

  7. Mpire writes a lot of stuff, but one thing he's 100% accurate on is how competition makes you better. Yenter has a nice pedigree already. How much better would he be if he wrestled at Medina, Top Gun, Brecksville etc?

How impressive is Union county? I can see how the northern Ky schools are doing well. Trinity/X are blessed with talent pools and resources too. Larue and Union doing what they do without any nearby schools to push them is very noteworthy.

I'm a wrestling nut. I grew up in NE Ohio and have lived in South Carolina, Virginia, Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. Most of the time programs rise or fall to the competition around them. Ky schools arent ready for St Edward/Perry etc. but it's remarkable we're producing Big Ten caliber kids, even though it's just a handful.
