  1. Let's just say I have been to my fair share of tournaments.  Without a doubt, this has been the worst.  Every single tournament that we went to this year provided better choices.  On Friday, in the early evening, I made my way to the concession stand and saw that my choice for something to eat was really an oversized (and overpriced) hot dog, or a piece of Chef Boarder type pizza.  At that point I decided I would buy a pop and be done.  Nothing else for three days from that place.  Had I been there for several hours I would understand.  But to think that people would eat that stuff for three days is ridiculous.  I have always happily patronized the concession area of the state tournament.  While not cheap, I thought it was reasonable considering the quality, variety, convenience, and the understanding that somewhere up the line there is a profit to be Mayfair enough.  This year I ate less, and was inconvenienced more.  Quick trips to the hotel and various food runs over the course of three days were required.  Hopefully they fix this problem by next year.

  2. So it was classy of Ryle's fans to boo him throughout the match?

I agree he shouldn't have thrown his head gear down like he did, but he let his emotions get the best of him and I think it's great to see that type of emotion. Not condoning him throwing his head gear at all, but it was nice to see a kid react like he did.

I don't think Ryle was booing Myron.  If you watch the video from ihigh even the commentators acknowledge that the fans didn't like the calls.  In watching the clip it was very obvious.

  3. As I sit here and look at my son crashed on the couch after going for three days, I cant express how proud of him I am. That was my first state tournament and it was one of the best things I have been to. good job to all the boys who made it. I hope to be back the next two years with this one and after that with his brother! Ryle dad if you find out what to do after sports let me know, because I have wondered what people do!!!

They could run concessions at the State Tournament next year.

  5. here goes the lack of communication again, but at least it has been rescheduled and the kids get to compete. it would be nice to know where so travel arrangements can be made. im glad this will be my sons last year in middle school wrestling, very disorganized and secretive.

It takes time to secure a facility to host a tournament.  Obviously you are clueless as to the preparation necessary to pull something like this off.  The Board will inform the coaches as soon as they have made arrangements.  Relax.

  6. I understand that the decision has been made and it is what it is, BUT, here is my problem. If you look at the votes, the final tallies are a little deceptive. If you look, 26 coaches voted for proposal #3. If you would take a closer look you see that the MAJORITY of coaches voted to wrestle this weekend. If you were to ask the 27 coaches that voted to wrestle this weekend, it is possible this pole would have came out a little different. No big deal, we can't change it now, I just needed to belly ache a little.

Fuzzy math.  If you were to have asked the question differently then yes the outcome may have been different.  You could say that a MAJORITY of coaches wanted to wrestle on a Saturday and if they had been polled to vote on 2/13 or 2/27 the outcome may have been different.  At least it is rescheduled.  Time to move on.

  7. Grapplearms, this is why we have the USA wrestling insurance.

I highly doubt that it would absolve the school district of liability if accidents/injuries occurred on their property due to the ice/snow.  A personal injury lawyer would go after both.......and of course keep at least a third.  I am crossing my fingers that rescheduling is an option.  It won't help the inconvenience, but the kids deserve their chance-that is for sure.

  8. ive got the fix dont hold events in hardin county anymore.  in these financial times im sure the hotels will be happy to lose all that money, except for those that have to pay anyway. i for one am not scared to drive in the rain.

It has nothing to do with the rain.  It has everything to do with the condition of the property tomorrow.  This isn't rocket science.  Nonetheless-a huge disappointment for all involved.

  9. Who do I contact to lodge a formal complaint?!!!!

    Pathetic!

I'd start with Mother Nature and if you don't get satisfaction then go straight to God.  Really now?  It is due to the weather.....no conspiracy to torment wrestlers and their families.  The schools have to maintain responsibility for their properties.  I am very disappointed too.  Parents make sacrifices, kids practice hard-cut/maintain weight, etc.  Clearly there are no winners when this happens.  Hopefully something can be worked out to re-schedule.

  10. There is one other avenue that teams need to take a look at, Union is a club but we still have paid coaches and use the school facilities. We do follow the school board rules just like the other teams in the county. The difference between us and them is we are insured through USA wrestling and the school is listed as additionally insured so no one can come back on them. I know that everyone has a USA card but don't know if the schools are listed as additional insured, if they are then the kids are covered to and from the event as long as it is a USA certified event. Keith Smith can better address this issue to make sure that what i am saying is correct.

Also, most school boards pay for state events (Bus and Hotel Rooms). You may need to talk to your school  superintendent and make sure that you are not paying for state when they would pick up the tab.

The school still has liability for the grounds.  So they have responsibility for the parking lot, sidewalks etc.  If it is a weekend, chances are they aren't going to pay someone overtime to clear it.  So they call off the function.  Some schools may be lucky enough to get buses.  I know Gray does not.  Heck-Ryle doesn't get buses unless the team pays for it.  School board doesn't pay for any of that.  I'm sure it varies by district.

  11. i plan on going and staying on friday night so my wrestler doesnt have to make the long drive the morning of the tournament too, but if the school system there cancels the event because of weather i guess i wasted my time and money in etown.  i think this is bologna, it seems there needs to be a better plan in place.  these competitions are for the kids and when you have situations like the state duals where some kids didnt get a shot to compete because of weather related decisions we are cheating them. they have worked hard all year to get to that spot and get that chance and then because of circumstances outside their control they dont get to compete, its not fair to them.  but i guess all that really matters is a few schools got to compete and get their "win," its not right for a kid or a team to have to take a forfeit in these instances. if it is all really about the kids, then someone needs to fix it so this does not happen.  this is my sons first year wrestling and if we make the trip and he doesnt get to compete  its not right either.

I sure hope the tournament is a go.  That is definitely the best case scenario.  I would love to know your suggestions for "fixing" the tournaments that are impacted by bad weather.  This is difficult for all parties involved.  Wrestling season takes place in the winter time.  Bad weather will always be a threat.  Since these functions take place on property owned by a school district there is some liability of the schools to ensure that the grounds are safe.  Let's face it......if they don't cancel and someone falls and goes boom the district may be faced with a law suit.  Same with allowing the team to travel in bad weather.  It all comes down to liability.  And I agree-that is a shame for the kids.  Gym time is at a premium in most schools, so rescheduling is a lot easier said than done.
