Is there anybody out there from McCreary County that can verify whether they are hosting the Eastern regional for Youth Wrestling on Feb. 23rd?

This is a great article on the mental preparation it takes to become a state champ. I believe, as coaches, we sometimes focus all of our time on the physical act of wrestling and lose sight that most kids need even more focus on the mental. Too many times we've all seen great wrestlers lose at state mentally. I only had one coach over the years that really understood this and the wrestlers that listened to him went on to become great ones. Keep these articles coming.

Coach Frohnapfel of Letcher County has offered to host the Eastern Regional on February 23rd. He can be contacted at robert.frohnapfel@letcher.kyschools.us Big Thanks to him and his staff for taking this on with such short notice.

As of today 02/05/2008 I received word that McCreary County WILL NOT BE HOSTING EASTERN YOUTH REGIONALS AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED. Any Youth team in the Eastern Regional that has interest please contact Stan Martin at stanmms@fuse.net

Statewide Youth Regionals will be held on February 23rd. (8) man brackets will be used just as they will at state. The weight classes are the same also except they will probably have to move kids around to get them matches as there are 41 weight classes for state. Times will be announced by each individual school. No I have not heard anything from McCreary.

There is no limit to the number of middle school matches for an elementary wrestler. We postponed this ruling for more discussion. Ranger 123 is absolutely correct in his reply stating there are some high school coaches that were elected as an advisory committee. There are going to be youth regionals this year. They are not qualifiers for state. It is the first year for them and we are using them simply as a way to generate more publicity for youth wrestling.

RYLE RAIDERS YOUTH TOURNAMENT DATE Saturday January 5, 2008 LOCATION Gray Middle School-Union, KY TIMES Weigh-ins and Registration need to be completed and forwarded by Wednesday January 2, 2008 NO REGISTRATION AFTER JANUARY 2!!! Wrestling will be from 9:00-4:00, with a one hour break at approximately 12:00. We are dividing the age brackets up and wrestling half of the kids from 9-12 and the other half from 1-4. The 1999 & 2000 age group, as well as the 2001 and after age group will wrestle at 9:00. The other two groups-1994-1996, and the 1997&1998 bracket will wrestle at 1:00. AWARDS Awards for the top 3 finishers in each weight class AGE GROUPS Born in 2001 or after, 1999 & 2000, 1997 & 1998, 1994 through 1996 Every attempt will be made to keep the wrestlers within 1 year and 5 lbs of each other with 8 man (maximum) brackets. Less than four in a bracket will be a round robin format. If we cannot accommodate this guideline we will notify the coach prior to the tournament. NO MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLERS!!!! ENTRY FEES $10 per wrestler (pre paid

The Youth Assocation has Elementary Duals on the radar screen for next year. We're trying to take this one step at a time. Getting the Regionals setup this year was our main focus. This will definitely be on the agenda for discussion at the state tournament this year. I think it is a great idea.

Since our meeting Union County has decided to host the Western Region. We now have all four regions setup. The region tournaments ARE NOT state qualifiers. They are simply in place to promote youth wrestling in all parts of the state and give the kids more mat time.

Just a note to thank all the coaches who attended our meeting today. Terrific turnout and more important we accomplished a lot for the youth wrestlers of KY. I look forward to working with everybody this season to keep advancing our sport. We now have three out of the four regions setup to hold our first ever regional tournament. I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to obtain the middle school region geographical breakdowns. Does anybody have them?

Elementary regionals are scheduled for February 23rd and state March 1st. As of today, 10/10/2007, St. X is holding the Louisville region and Campbell County is a maybe for the Northern Region. We still need Eastern and Western teams to hold those respective regionals. Any questions on how to do this direct all emails to stanmms@fuse.net

The final scheduled meeting of the KY State Youth Wrestling Association for 2007 will be held on October 14, 2007, 2:00 at St. X High School. Any team wishing to host a Regional event this year must be in attendance. Johnson Central is the planned site for this years Youth State Tournament. Tournament procedures will be discussed and handed out. A board member from the KHSAA will be on hand to speak to us about the direction the high school committee feels we should be headed.
