Irish and heavy83 are perfect examples of coaches looking at the big picture. I'm much more interested that my youth kids are improving, giving 100% effort, and learning how to be decent people than their win/loss record. I don't even keep track of their win/loss records. There are plenty of moves a Youth coach can teach that will win lots of matches at the Youth level that won't work at higher levels. We focus on the techniques we believe will work at all levels. If the win/loss record was all we worried about we would coach completely different. Like heavy83 stated there's plenty of time to put tons of pressure on the kids.

The way the weight classes are currently setup I don't see how it could be done with any real meaning. The majority of weights would be walk-throughs. Only the 60-80 lb. kids would truely have to qualify. The rest would simply have to wrestle in a Regional. There are 6 regions. It has been the majority thinking that if a team wants to have a "Champions Tournament" after our Youth State more power to them. I don't want everybody to win either. But, at 5 years old and 35 lbs. how do you put those kids in a 50lb weight class. That's the equivalent of a 152lb kid wrestling in the 189lb bracket in High School. Nobody would even begin to believe that's a good system. When you have kids spread out from 1st thru 6th grade special allowances have to be made. It's never going to be perfect.

You are. There are no PREDETERMINED weight classes. We start with the lowest actual weight to the next 8 kids, assuming they are within 10%, and that's a weight class. I'm saying throw out the predetermined, by some individual, weight classes. Keep the age groups the same. We do this every single weekend in Cinncinnati and it works great. I've never heard anybody refer to the CYW league as a riduculous format.

Thanks Ranger for expressing what most of us feel. I could write pages on the difficulty of having one state ELEMENTARY champ per weight. If anybody wants to really listen to all the issues then show up for our meetings. 2 hours x twice per year. This is an extremely difficult dilemma on how to institute this formula. There are no weight classes in the 5/6 & 7/8 age groups. So in these brackets, every bracket winner is the true state champion. It is my opinion the same formula can be used in the 9/10 & 11/12 age groups. This would satisfy the "TRUE STATE CHAMP" crowd as well as acheiving the original mission of the KSYWA which is centered around participation and doing our best to help grow Youth wrestling in Ky. All comments are welcome but if you truely want to contribute talk to your Regional Rep about the issues first. That will clear up alot of misconceptions.

11 & 12 year olds will not be separated. It is one division. In the case of multiple brackets within the same weight an effort will be made to base brackets on age then weight.

Yes, there will be team trophies. If there are multiple kids, from the same team at one class, only the highest scorer receives team points. This means only one point scorer per weight/age class. No advancement points. 1st 16 2nd 12 3rd 8 4th 4

    Thoughts from Middle School Tourney

In Central Ky. they formed a league and wrestle just about every weekend. Those coaches are doing a great job of promoting Youth wrestling. Ryle held a Youth tournament (3rd yr) and over 400 kids wrestled on Jan. 10th. I don't pretend to know every tournament being held in Ky. but I am sure the Youth coaches are doing all they can to promote wrestling as evidenced by the huge growth. I don't know how many Middle and High School tournaments are held throughout the season but remember both of these organizations have been around for considerably longer than Youth.

    Thoughts from Middle School Tourney

Slight correction: The KSYWA was officially organized 2 years ago with bylaws and a board of directors. Regionals are being held at 6 different locations with the State Tournament being held on March 7th at Fern Creek High School. By the way, we're expecting close to 1000 kids. Easily the largest wrestling tournament ever in KY. If you need information on the Youth organization or have kids that may want to attend Regionals and State send me an email. I will be glad to help.

In 30' you can train just about anybody to be a tableworker. Get some bout sheets, from your High school coach or off the web, have a couple kids wrestle a match with a ref while scoring the match and you'll be fine. Parents are always a bit apprehensive at first but actually enjoy it and learn much more about the sport. We only need one person to keep score, another to flip the score pad, one timer, and one more to keep the kids lined up on deck. Three people can do it just as well if the scorekeeper also operates the score board. We appreciate all the teams help and feel it is vital to keep Youth wrestling growing. In just 3 yrs we've added well over 40 new teams.

    2009 Kentucky State Youth Regionals

Ranger is correct. Regional weight will be used for state bracketing to eliminate the log jam of 1000 kids trying to weighin on Sat. morning.
  16. Starting this Wrestling Season all wrestlers must compete in a Regional Tournament in order to gain participation in the State Tournament. Posted below are the Regions as outlined in the Spring 2008 meeting. Bylaw 6. Regions - Regional host sites shall be rotated amongst regional schools. Each region is responsible for establishing a schedule of host sites in a fair manner. Regional sites must be approved no less than (1) year ahead of time. REGIONAL PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED TO WRESTLE AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT(exceptions include bereavement, injury, or illness with doctor's excuse. An injured or ill wrestler will be required to WEIGHIN at the sametime as all other wrestlers at the designated regional host (satelite locations are allowed). Weigh-ins shall be performed within 24 hours before the scheduled start of the tournament. Weigh-ins shall be supervised by no less than (2) coaches from different teams. These weights will then be turned in to the Board and then forwarded to the State Tournament host where they will be used for bracketing purposes. NOTE: Region weights will be used for STATE. We need teams to hold Regionals in all but the Louisville Region, being held by Fern Creek.
