As someone else pointed out, he was sick.
Couple of ranked kids didn't wrestle yesterday. That's how we got two unranked kids in the 285 final.

38 minutes ago, FalconWrestling said:Quick correction it appears you listed Jimmy as the third ranked wrestler at 138 when it's actually his brother Konner. I will say again though that Jimmy wrestled like an elite wrestler last night
You are correct. I goofed. Right family, wrong wrestler. That's entirely on me.
I think Jimmy was shocked I wanted to interview him, but his dad - coach was thrilled.

I was asked to freelance cover yesterday's 21-school, 180-ish wrestler Jefferson County Tournament of Champions for The Courier-Journal.
Wrote a recap and ran results (all 21 team scores, results from all 3 placement matches for all 14 weight classes). They actually had the story online (at 7:20 p.m.) and tweeted out before I got back home to Hardin County. Was treated VERY well by the staff at Fairdale and met some coaches from around the Louisville area.
Live tweeted the finals as well at https://twitter.com/nateinsportsAnyhoo ...

FOOTBALL CLASSES OF THE TOP-20 FINISHING TEAMS AT STATE IN 2013
1. St. Xavier (6-A)
2. Campbell County (6-A)
3. Union County (2-A)
4. Woodford County (5-A)
5. Simon Kenton (6-A)
6. Trinity (6-A)
7. Ryle (6-A)
8. Oldham County (6-A)
9. LaRue County (3-A)
10. Henry Clay (6-A)
11. Moore (4-A)
12. Southern (6-A)
13. Wayne County (3-A)
14. Christian County (5-A)
14. Johnson Central (4-A)
16. John Hardin (5-A)
16. Walton-Verona (2-A)
18. Meade County (6-A)
19. Franklin County (5-A)
20. Fern Creek (6-A)
More than 1/3 (33.3 PERCENT) of the top 17 teams points-wise were 4-A or below (2-A Union, 3-A LaRue, 4-A Moore, 3-A Wayne, 4-A Johnson Central and 2-A Walton-Verona).
You also have to take into account that many 5-A and 6-A football programs have had teams for years. There are a ton of 1-A, 2-A, 3-A football programs that don't have wrestling.
You also have to take into account where wrestling is booming. For example, in two of your biggest cities/counties in the state (Owensboro-Daviess and Bowling Green-Warren), wrestling is almost non-existent.
You also have to take into account that JUST because you are a big school does NOT mean you will have success, either. Of the 81 (not 77) schools which were listed on the state scoreboard, check out these schools which finished 62nd or worse: 62. Iroquois (5-A), 62. Tates Creek (6-A), 64. Bryan Station (6-A), 64. Cooper (5-A), 69. Male (6-A), 72. Seneca (6-A), 76. DuPont Manual (6-A), 77. Daviess County (6-A), 77. Graves (5-A).
Of the BOTTOM 20 teams at State, 9 -- or 45 percent -- of them were 5-A or 6-A. That's NOT a good percentage when trying to convince big schools (which should have the enrollment to support it) to pick up wrestling. "Hey, if you pick up wrestling, there's a 45 percent chance that you'll finish in the bottom 20 teams or 62nd place or worse at State! How's that for success!"
I've been following high school sports since May of 2000. I've been around long enough to see the KHSAA get rid of districts (which made it EASIER to compete in the region tourney) and go to a 32-man bracket (made it EASIER to qualify for State).
In many regions, it took only 2 or 3 wins to qualify for state wrestling. Three total postseason wins (before state) won't get you to State in basketball, baseball-softball, volleyball or soccer.
It's easier to qualify for State in wrestling than it it is to get to state in most team sports (because each region only gets one State berth). Bowling gets two, but there are only eight regions. Plus, you're one-and-done in bowling.
If you REALLY want to dive into the numbers, total up the number of the small schools (4-A and below) who were among the 81 teams at State. And then figure out how many of the small schools earned a medal. I bet it's higher than you think considering:
1) There were plenty of big schools which didn't earn a medal
2) There are more big schools than small schools at State -

- 3-A football school (easily smaller than X, Trinity, Woodford, South Oldham, Campbell Co., Eastern)
If that's not showing up, then 70+ percent -- actually, more likely an even greater percentage -- of wrestling programs in this state aren't showing up.
-
Coach Brown,
Then Region 4 is at X this year (since it was supposed to host last season and didn't)
or it is at Trinity (next school in rotation).

This isn't the big scale kind of idea that I think you are looking for, but I think step one has to be to increase interest in the general population. One thing I have seen with family and my son's friends is that they would like to come see him wrestle, but they really don't want to give up a whole day Saturday to go to a tournament. We could get more students and friends to come to single or tri-team duals held during the week, in the evenings. They would have to be local schools for the travel, and I know making weight is an issue during the week for some. But most casual observers and students might come and watch one or two duals and support the team, but they aren't giving up a Saturday and traveling to the host school. This would also increase press coverage, which is step two.
Weekday matches won't increase press coverage, unless you're talking about small weekly papers.
When was the last time you saw the Courier-Journal, Herald-Leader or any Lou/Lex TV station at a Wednesday night dual?
And this is NOT a wrestling thing.
Same goes for weekday swimming, golf, tennis, track and cross country duals. The bad thing is in individual sports, you'll see your opponent plenty of times without a weekday meeting, which frankly, means little.
Midweek basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, volleyball matches get covered because of attendance, interest and implications (district seedings).
And once bowling and archery become bigger -- bowling became an official KHSAA sport in 2010 and archery is on its way with plenty of schools offering coed teams -- it will be the same way, meaning tournaments get covered but weekday duals do not.

Region 2
Anderson County (could see eventually shifted to Lexington region)
Barren County (first year, furthest away)
Boyle County (could see eventually shifted to Lexington region)
Central Hardin
Danville (could see eventually shifted to Lexington region)
Fort Knox
John Hardin
LaRue County
North Hardin
Nelson County
Could see Meade eventually end up in Region 2 as well as the Bullitts (same football district with Hardin schools, same track regions, in soccer district with Nelson)

Did we NOT learn anything from basketball a few years ago? It was one of the Louisville regions (6 or 7 in basketball) that had a referee fiasco. The tournament was scheduled to finish on a Thursday, but didn't finish until the FOLLOWING Monday or Tuesday and then the winner had to play on Thursday in Lexington.
The region in question will have to do everything in its power (go to single elimination, try to wrestle on the following Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) before State is pushed back.
I've seen State tennis held just hours after a tornado hit UK and there was still debris on site.
I've seen the State softball finals held at 12:30 IN THE MORNING.
I've seen State girls' basketball games tip off at 10 p.m.
Bottom line: State waits for no one.

State tennis has been seeded for a while.
Track and swimming both seed in regards to the people with the fastest times get put in the same heat, the slower times in a slower heat.
