    State Duals

    1) A public-private split or a big-small class split won't be happening any time soon. Forget it. The numbers don't support it. You want the best of 40-ish teams (most of whom do not fill out all 14 spots) to be considered a STATE champion? Please. Plus, if you think EVERY public/independent school district has the EXACT SAME enrollment criteria, you haven't done your homework. They don't. Josh and I have seen dozens of kids in various sports who lived in one district and played in another. 2) As far as gaining traction from the KHSAA: A: All qualifying must become uniform. Meaning all regionals must be held the same week in the same style. Check every other sport and you'll see this to be the same. So it may mean one weekend every school in the region gets together at one school and wrestles and has Duals. Weekday matches between region rivals would NOT count (in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, football, regular-season wins over teams do NOT matter in postseason tournaments). Now you could make sure every team has at least one dual with every other team in the region prior to region duals and use those results for seeding (no different than what the other team sports do on the district level). B: That being said, NO sport in Kentucky uses a round-robin approach to decide district/region/state champs. None. Softball does have double elimination at State. All-A softball (not a KHSAA official title) is experimenting with round-robin pool before single-elimination 8-team tournament. What's this mean? Your region duals qualifying become single or double-elimination and the last team -- meaning one, no region runner-ups qualify for a KHSAA state tournament in any "team" sport -- left standing heads to State Duals. C: An eight-team double-elimination State Duals could be held on a Saturday at any number of neutral-site arenas (NKU, Pikeville Arena, Corbin, Memorial, Diddle, EKU, Murray State, Morehead State, Bellarmine (site of state volleyball), Campbellsville (college wrestling program), Lindsey Wilson (college wrestling program), Cumberlands (college wrestling program)). KHSAA isn't too keen on having team state titles handed out at high schools, but at the same time, it's not too keen on outrageous rental fees (which rules at Yum for any state tournament outside boys' hoops any time soon). D: Most likely, the last four weekends of the season would change to this: Region Duals, Region Individuals, State Duals, State Individual. The problem is someone getting hurt at State Duals would/could jeopardize their run at a State Individual title. And it's unlikely that a KHSAA state title (i.e. Duals) would be awarded midway through a season. It would have to be at the end. Plus, how do coaches factor in the every growing Elementary and Middle School state tournaments? The KHSAA doesn't care because that's not their jurisdiction. And they're NOT going to change the schedule/extend the season to fit them in. This means the elementary/Middle state tournaments (and qualifying) could find themselves changing dates). Here's the problem folks: A lot of people say "Well, State Duals should be KHSAA sanctioned." And that's nifty, but not many people have sat down, thought it through and come up with a calendar and criteria. Tennis is the same way. The tennis folks are trying to have Duals (like the NCAA does with its team championships) but haven't devised a way to make it work out in terms of logistics. Other states do both (individual, team) in both sports (wrestling, tennis). And none of them are ideal (and most states that do it have far more teams than Kentucky does). It seems all of this would be a big hassle/headache just to be KHSAA recognized. I'm not being sexist, but it's the same reason cheerleading is not likely to be a sport in Kentucky, yet bowling and archery are well on their way. Cheerleading doesn't want to go through the protocol (roster limits, dead period, transfer rules) in order to be a sport. Wrestling doesn't want to have to make drastic changes to meet the KHSAA's wants.

    Newberry done for the year

Reigning 215-pound state champion, LaRue County junior Drew Newberry, tore his meniscus and knee in a football game last week. He is out the rest of football season and will miss wrestling season. He should be back for both for the 2011-2012 school year. http://www.thenewsenterprise.com/cgi-bin/c2.cgi?053+article+Sports+2010093005925053053011
  3. According to a thread on KentuckyPreps, middle-school athletes have been banned from ALL varsity sports for Jefferson County PUBLIC schools (this does not include Trinity, St. Xavier, DeSales, etc). Someone else said this includes any team (such as JV and freshman) ran directly by the high school. Apparently a lengthy e-mail is out stating such. This would really appear to hurt sports such as wrestling (getting 103, 112 and 119 pound kids is tough enough), girls' cross country, girls' hoops. Football and soccer would be affected as much as middle schoolers can't play varsity football and can only play JV soccer if a junior or senior is NOT present on the field. Can any of our friends in Jefferson County confirm? I'm from Hardin County, so I'm not as well attached.

Middle Schoolers banned from varsity for Jefferson Co Public Schools?

Just because ONE school district makes the rule DOES NOT mean the rest of the state should follow suit. Meade County went for years without allowing middle schoolers. First year they allowed them, the girls' cross country team went to state for the first time in a loooooooong while. I can name a long list of high-caliber girls' basketball players who had major impacts as eighth-graders. You can look at the state wrestling qualifiers at 103 and 112 and even 119 and know middle schoolers can play a big role. Just because your JCPS decided to handcuff itself does not mean the rest of the state should have to abide by some warped JCPS decision, too. I don't care if you just happen to be the largest school district.

Middle Schoolers banned from varsity for Jefferson Co Public Schools?

Confirmed in today's Courier-Journal: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20100401/SPORTS05/4010379/Middle-schoolers-can-t-compete-for-public-high-schools Middle schoolers can't compete for public high schools By Jason Frakes

Middle Schoolers banned from varsity for Jefferson Co Public Schools?

    1) In order to wrestle for South Oldham, you'd have to enroll/attend a S.O. feeder middle school (assuming there is more than one). 2) If an eighth-grader does that (wrestle varsity for South Oldham as a middle schooler living in Louisville) but for their freshman year enrolls at Moore, Fern Creek, Western, etc., and does NOT move, the kid would be ineligible to wrestle their freshman year. No offense Pinned500, but that's a cheap - and NOT incredibly bright - way to circumvent the rule. Wrestling folks aren't the only ones upset. Middle school girls are quite prevalent on high school cross country, soccer and basketball teams, too.

Middle Schoolers banned from varsity for Jefferson Co Public Schools?

According to a post on KentuckyPreps' Football forum, this is for ALL sports on ALL levels (freshman, JV and varsity). Don't know the reasoning, but some KYPreps posters have said it has to do with recruiting. Some also said the JCPS is going to put more emphasis on middle school sports. I think if anything, this would open up the recruiting wars more b/c now, teams will be trying to entice kids who have NOT established where they are going yet. This hurts wrestling bad. Girls' hoops and girls' cross country, too. A lot of soccer teams won't be able to field JV teams now (of course back in the 90s, middle schoolers weren't allowed and most every team had a full JV squad, so who knows).

2011 State Tournament Will Be @ Frankfort Again

Olympic_wish, Sure the X-T regular season game would do well in Commonwealth ... but it would still roughly be half empty. PJCS was just remodeled/expanded and there will be tons of empty seats next time the X-T face off is held there. Plus, why would X-T move all the way to Lexington? The further away from the Ville, the less fans in attendance.

2011 State Tournament Will Be @ Frankfort Again

Olympic_wish, WKU has a nice football stadium and it's not that far from Louisville (straight down I-65). X and T didn't come remotely close to filling WKU in 2009. http://www.khsaa.org/football/2009/6afinal.htm Attendance: 9962 Just because ONE specific football game might fill half of Commonwealth doesn't mean the other classes should be held there. Plus, if folks are NOT willing to make the easy drive down 65 to BG, you really think 30,000+ will drive 80 miles to Commonwealth? I have my doubts.

2011 State Tournament Will Be @ Frankfort Again

Holding state wrestling in Freedom Hall would be like holding girls' hoops or girls' volleyball in Rupp or high school football at Commonwealth: Can't afford it. Can't fill it. Bigger (in these cases the biggest or next-to-biggest in the state) does not mean better in certain cases. I like Freedom Hall. Go there 10+ times a year for UofL basketball. Not sure KHSAA wrestling would fill it or could afford the rent. Would be a LOT closer for me, though.

2011 State Tournament Will Be @ Frankfort Again

Not sure leaving Frankfort is the best idea, however: -- New arena at NKU (the Bank of Kentucky Center). Beautiful. Plenty of hotels and restaurants. And in a wrestling-loving area: -- New area in Corbin. Area is wrestling crazy, and being in a smaller area, they may go all-out to showcase a big-time event. Drawback is travel for most teams. Not many great hotels and restaurants. -- Pikeville (East KY Expo Center). Travel would be an issue for a lot of folks, same as hotels and restaurant availability. -- Broadbent or Kentucky International Convention Center. Going to Louisville would be closer for a lot of teams, and no shortage of hotels and restaurants. Moving back to Louisville would increase media coverage (especially by the four major TV stations in Louisville). Freedom Hall would be way too big (it would feel empty). Broadbent is older (much like Frankfort). And the Louisvillle Gardens is older too, but is plenty big enough and would give the tourney an old-time feel. -- New Horsepark Arena or Memorial Coliseum at UK. Lexington is decent wrestling area. Plenty of hotels, restaurants and media coverage. Fairly centrally located. Rupp would be way too big.

  25. http://www.ucadvocate.com/articles/stories/public/201001/13/04O5_sports.html UCHS wrestlers win Mt. Vernon tournament for sixth straight time Advocate Staff Report news@ucadvocate.com The Union County High School wrestling team took home another championship at the West Frankfort Redbird Invitational last Saturday, making them the sixth straight tournament winner in the six years it has been implemented. Union scored 214 points just ahead of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, who had tallied 196 points. Taking third place honors was Highland of Illinois with 146.5 points. Union took 12 wrestlers and all 12 came away as medalists. There were six first-place winners including Brock Ervin at the 10-3lb. weight class with a pin over Devin Wilson of Carmi, Illinois who was ranked second in the state (of Illinois) in that weight class. In the 119-lb. class, first=place honors went to Gabe Ervin who defeated Zach Frasier of West Frankfort, Illinois, going 11-9 in overtime. In the 130-lb. class, Keaton Thomas defeated Curt Kaufman of Mt. Vernon with a score of 16-7 and was awarded first place in his division. Taking champion honors in the 135-lb. class was Isaac Thomas who defeated his opponent 7-4 and Caleb Ervin once again took first place in the 140-lb. class by pinning Mitchell Murrell of Mt. Vernon in 3:22. Caleb recorded three pins for the day and was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by the coaches. Thomas Buckman in the 171-lb. weight class pinned his opponent, Jacob Ewers of Mt. Vernon, in 4:26 for the win. Buckman also had three pins for the day with an outstanding showing at the tournament. In the 152-lb. class, Jake Risinger finished second for the tournament with two wins but lost a battle in the finals with a score of 8-2 against Jake Marshall of Mt. Vernon. At the end of the semi-finals and the beginning of the consolation round, Union was trailing Mt. Vernon by 29 points but after a pep talk by Coach Dennis Walls, the momentum changed.
