  1. Feedback from Coaches: Here is the feedback I have gotten from coaches. 1. 9-11th grade only 2. Can not participate if qualified for state in previous years. 3. Can not participate if have higher then a 50% winning percentage in any varsity competition (EX. you got a kid who is not very good but is on the varsity team because no one else is at that weight, wrestler by default basically.) 4. One wrestler per team per weight class Thats what the coaches have said to me in emails.
  2. There are not a lot of J.V. wrestlers. Some teams struggle to field a full team and some have a few J.V. wrestlers, like 5. I think that a J.V. regional could realistically be held during one night. do the altered periods, 1-2-2. Regionals is definitely a good idea. So we are talking a possible 32 man bracket. The 5 match rule would hurt us.
  3. also, a rule that New York uses. They have JV sectionals and then state. Their rule states that if the default wrestler (wrestler who fills a weight class just because no one else is there.) has more then 8 varsity wins then he can not participate in JV Sectionals. Would this be preferred over the winning percentage rule?
  4. We are trying to encourage kids to stick the season out and that they have something to work toward even if they are just JV. We will see. If most of the coaches say just one per weight class then thats what we will shoot for. I have seen other states let 2 in per weight class per team.

    Recruiting

I work morning duty in the gym. All the middle schoolers at Moore gather in the gym and then are released to class at 7:30. I have a projection screen on the stage. I hook my laptop up to a projector and play it during that whole time. The kids can see it from siting in the bleachers. Just started doing it last week but I'll let you know how it works. I've had a few kids who have told me they do Jiu-Jitsu and want to be UFC fighters. I basically tell them that they are silly if they don't join the wrestling team. Wrestling is the best skill for MMA.
  6. Middle schoolers have tournaments every weekend. They can wrestle there. I have some middle schoolers that would fare well in the JV tournament but this tournament is for keeping those 9-11 graders interested in the sport. A good goal at the end of the season for them. A lot of coaches have said no seniors. We have to cut them out. No exceptions are made in other JV sports for seniors so we won't either.
  7. I modified the first post Grappler of old to only count head to head competition. Is 50% too high guys? Should it be lower?
  8. Ok, I've been thinking about a JV state tourney and someone mentioned why don't you just put one together and call it that. I think a good date may be on the same weekend as state duals. A lot of teams don't do anything that day anyways. That date for this season is Jan. 26th. I can throw it at my place(Moore). I think these younger guys need something to work for other then just being practice dummies. I would just like some input and suggestions on how we can get something like this started for this next season. We could do a blind draw or seed kids based on performances in other JV tourneys throughout the year. Seneca, Trinity, and Connor had JV tourneys last year. Anyone else? Will you have them this year? What dates? We would also have to discuss eligibility. We don't want varsity wrestlers in this tournament but then again some of us have guys who wrestle varsity just because they are the only one at that weight class. Do we go win percntage? grade level?

JV State Tourney? Coaches help me here!

How about 9-11 grade only and state qualifiers from the previous year may not enter? I think that would be the easiest to control.

    Head Coach Opening

ok so where is Dan going?
  11. Moore Traditional School is looking for middle school coaches. Coach Gibbons and Parker have moved back to their hometowns. They did an excellent job with the team in the last 3 years. If you don't know much about Moore we are a 6th-12th grade school. The only one in Jefferson County. Kids at Moore start out in 6th grade and wrestle there for 7 years. Huge advantage. We also got a brand new wrestling room and anything and everything to get better in wrestling. Did I mention a great A.D. who has made wrestling a top sport at our school. The middle school team practices 3 days a week and usually has meets on Saturdays. any other questions just ask.

Fern Creek names new head coach

Congrats Josh. Nothing feels better then going back to your alma mater and making it a better place then it was when you were there. My experience at Moore has been wonderful and I'm sure you will do great at your alma mater as well.

    Re-alignment???

if Seneca left Region 4 that would leave only Trinity St.X Moore Central Manual KSB Atherton Basically 5 teams. Who would then be added? No way you can leave it like that.

Moore right now looks like this, but you never know. A lot of things could change from now and the beginning of the year. 15. We need to get some type of referee recruitment program started here in Kentucky. I know in several areas there are times when we are short on refs. We need to encourage wrestlers to referee after their high school career ends. Wrestlers who may be going to college but staying in state this would be great for. Part time job that would be seasonal and around their schedule. I've mentioned it to my few seniors. I wish there was some type of recruitment packet that the state would prepare so we can get these kids interested and started on the right track to becoming a certified referee. Tackett has mentioned the shortage of refs but i really don't think there is a movement to get more. They could also set-up a booth with information on becoming a ref at the state tournament every year. Any other ideas or possible fixes to this problem?

    Region 4

I agree with Trinity coming in first. I think second could be a toss-up. Seneca lost a little. Moore lost two seniors, gains 5 experienced freshmen but none that will make an immediate impact. Central didn't lose anyone. I think St.X lost a few but they have so many JV wrestlers that they can replace kids pretty easily. Which individual wrestlers win regionals next year?

JV State Tourney? Coaches help me here!

Someone mentioned that the best way to do it would be that the wrestler does not wrestle in regionals. That would be your first team and varsity wrestlers right there. You then run into the problem of possibly having say a first year freshmen fill a weight class. I had a few of those. Do you not let them wrestle in JV state? If it comes to that situation do you then go by maybe win percentage? Example: - Wrestler must not represent your team in regionals - Exception: wrestler is the only wrestler at that weight class for your team and has a win percentage below 50%. ???? I'm not sure how to punish and unhonest team or coach. Do you just forfeit his place if he did and roll everyone up? Do you penalize the team from participating the following year? more ideas...

    Summer Wrestling Clinics

I know that St.X is about to have the Purlers on the 12th and 13th of May. Are there any other clinics coming up this summer? I'm trying to compile a list of tournaments and clinics to give to my wrestlers.

  20. The Horsepower Wrestling Club at Moore Traditional School will be hosting a 3 hour clinic featuring Real Pro Wrestler and Indiana University Assistant Coach Mike Mena. The Clinic will take place tonight, Thursday April 12th from 6-9pm in Moore's wrestling room. The cost of the clinic is $30.00. It's $15.00 for Horsepower Wrestling Club members. You can sign up at the door but need your parent/guardian present to fill out proper paperwork. If you plan on signing up at the door please show up at around 5:30pm. You can also download the flier here http://eteamz.active.com/horsepowerwrestlingclub/handouts then have your parents fill it out and catch a ride with someone else if need be. Coach Mena will be bringing an Indiana University wrestler with him to help assist. He will also bring some gear to sell so bring some extra money. This is also a great oppurtunity to show your skills in front of a college coach/recruiter. Coach Mena loves recruiting and takes all chances to evaluate talent. Also, if you are interested in coming let me know co I can give coach Mena some estimated numbers. Type down what you would like to learn. Coach Mena would like to customize this clinic to our needs.
  21. You can pay at the door. You need your parent/guardian there to sign the release.
