This year's champs vs. champs of the past

Recommended Posts

ok...what wrestlers who won state titles in the past would you like to see wrestle this year's champs? only match wrestlers who won titles in the same weight class and give a prediction.

example:

103: Garth Yenter- Campbell County (2011) vs. Luke Metzker- Henry Clay(2000). Not such a close match. I originally thought it would be, but I think Metzker's size, and the fact that he won 103 when it was still full of upper classmen would give him the edge. 10-4.

112: Brock Ervin- Union County (2011) vs. Jason Davioux- Scott (2000). Davioux, at the time, was considered one of the most technical in the state and was very slick. He was a Jr. this season and was very very good. I think Brock may be one of the best in KY in the last several years. Definitely the best freshman. I think this is an OT match, going either way. But I have to make a pick... 8-6 Ervin in OT.

etc...

so what do you all think?

The 171 match would be a great one. From what I have heard about Charasika, he was an amazing athlete and was super strong. Most of the guys you mentioned were before my time though, except for Brad Cooper.

103- Yenter vs Chris Valentine (Woodford) Valentine was huge for a 103.

112- Ervin vs Dan Carman (Henry Clay)

119- Ruschell vs Jason Talbot (Oldham Co.)

125- Fahy vs Joe Carr (Woodford Co.) I'd like to see Fahy deal with the length Joe Jr. had.

130- Carr vs Brandon Wilkins (Campbell Co.)

135- Cooper vs Brad Cooper (SK) Just because I'd like to see Brad make Kevin cry.

140- Salyer vs Paul Kaiser (SK) Since Zach beat an SK guy I thougth it would be nice to match him with another.

145- Whalen vs Isacc Knable (St. X)

152- Ervin vs Ian Horn (Woodford Co.)

160- Lampe (St. X) vs Jacob Holbrook (Campbell Co.)Holbrook was only scored on twice the whole year.

171- Jude vs Charasika (St. X) Tendai was a monster

189- Buckman vs Miguel Merritt (Hoptown) Miguel made good wrestlers look awful

215- Durbin vs Livingston Merritt (Hoptown) Merritt's legs were bigger than Durbin's body.

285- House vs Mike Ramsey (Campbell County)Keep with the North Hardin vs CC match up.

This could be a little unfair for this yrs winners because my guys won state more than once

103-Storms-2X 103,119 & Runner-up in 1992 at 130, got a bad call for stalling in OT

As someone who has been on the mat with both guys, I give the edge to Yenter at 103. Storms was strong, but not as technically sound as Yenter is at this point. And don't start with the stalling call. :)

Watch out Ranger you will start to show your age! I haven't wrestled Yenter but Storms was strong, but I must defer to the elder on this one.

As Ranger said Yenter is too much of a technician for Storms

And no way Ervin beats Ritchie. Ritchie would make him beg for mercy.

I dont know Ritchie, but in my 12 years at the state tourney I have yet to see a better 112 than Ervin.

Dave Ritchie was absolutely amazing. By Ervin's senior year who knows he actually probably will be better, but I watched Dave Ritchie wrestle his senior year and he made kids blow snot bubbles at state. I believe he pinned a defending state champ in the finals??

GOO & Ranger - don't bet against Storms. Tommy not only dominated in state, he always found a way to draw the toughest kid in the tournament and managed to beat most of them when SK wrestled a very tough out of state schedule. Storms was at most a 125 pounder his sr year, and wrestled up to make the team stronger. He could have dropped to 119. I seen him weigh 128 the monday following districts fully clothed drinking water. 130 was too big for him, and it still was a stalling call in OT that took down the champ.

I figured this discussion would wake up old pioneer. I agree you absolutely hate to see a state finals match decided by a stall call, but as so many of us say, beat the kid to the point the official can't decide the match. And my opinion on the Storms-Yenter matchup is looking at 103. That year I don't think Storms was as good a wrestler as Yenter; he relied a lot more on strength than later in his career.

OK here is one for some of you older guys.

Caleb Ervin 2011 Vs Jared Trice (Hop-town)1989.

I'm not sure who wins this one. A battle for the ages.

Yes, a battle for the ages. But that is asking a lot of Caleb. Trice is like Paul Bunyan or something, his stories are larger than life.
