Wrestler in finals DQ'd

Recommended Posts

I was talking to some guys yesterday about the state finals about 10 yrs or so ago. Tim Lawson won and the kid he wrestled just ran off the mat didnt shake hands or anything and was DQ'd.Who was it ? I thought it was a kid from Eastern, one guy thought the kid was from Caldwell, and the other guy didnt know . Anyone remember?

From what I remember the match was tied with just a couple of seconds left and it looked to me like Badejo let up a little thinking they would just go to overtime. Lawson was thinking otherwise and got the takedown as time ran out and the crowd went wild. Badejo and Lawson shake hands and right after they do Badejo turns and takes off in a dead sprint and hurdles the state officials/media table(with the tourney at Atherton at the time the table was about 10 feet to the side of the mat on the gym floor). Badejo disappears into the stairwell and about 15 seconds later at the opposite end of the gym a garbage can is thrown down the stairs and soon after Badejo is escorted from the building.

I believe his team points were taken away and no one was officially runner-up that year.

I remember hearing about this one.  I am really surprised that they took his medal away. (I also didn't hear about the garbage can.)  From what I heard he was DQ'ed because he jumped over Louis Stouts head (Wrestling commissioner.)  Most of the people I talked to thought he should have still gotten his medal.

This is Ti Badejo.

I did jump the table. It was case of temporary insanity. I couldn't believe they awarded him the points. He had been stalling all match. Phil Coomes preached endurance, men were made in the 3 period, and I went hard all match. I thought time expired. I had wrestled Tim earlier in the season at the finals of a tournament in which I pinned him off a throw in the first round. His coaches told him not to wrestle me straight up. I felt it wasn't right, me and Tim had wrestled eachother a number of times over the past years and every match was a war. Why should he not honor the battle when it really counted, at the State Finals. The refs continuosly hit me for stalling when I was the aggressor. I felt cheated and at 17, I had no control over my emotions. I had only been wrestling for three years and overcame the odds. I placed second my junior year and felt I was the winner my senior year. I respect Tim as a champion however I am also and will always be a champion in my own rite. Anybody who knew me knew I worked hard for mine. I would love to see the tape(Willing to buy it). I saw Tim when I was in college, he got a scholarship to Eastern Michigan, I only recieved two offers during my high school carreer. To me that was a slap in the face considering the amount of growth and potential I displayed over a three year period which started at Central High Scool and Ended at Eastern. Most kids in Kentucky are born on the mat. It took a long time to understand, but I'm over it now. I loved wrestling with a passion and encourage all strong minded youths to engage in it. I will never forget the experience. Only the strong survive and I'm still here. Thank God

Peace Ti Badejo
