Raider twosome ready to rumble

State champions Peace, Reid win divisions, helping Ryle finish third

BY ADAM BAUM | ABAUM@ENQUIRER.COM

There were whispers throughout the crowd in Ryle's gymnasium Saturday night because Mason Reid and Bryan Peace were putting on a show.

Ryle's two defending state champions didn't disappoint at the Raider Rumble. Peace (140 pounds) and Reid (171) won their divisions, helping Ryle to a third-place finish as a team.

Grundy took first place, followed by defending state champion Union County. Ten Ryle wrestlers placed either first or second.

Peace pinned three of his opponents and won major decisions in his first match and in the championship match, beating Matt Miller of LaRue County (19-10).

Peace is considerably calm before his matches, probably because he's been in the hierarchy of Kentucky wrestling since he was in the eighth grade. Peace placed sixth in state as an eighth-grader, fourth as a freshman, second as a sophomore and first as a junior.

"I don't try and pump myself up before a match," said Peace.

"I try to remain calm and relaxed, but at the same time build some intensity and just focus on what I need to do."

Reid managed to pin all five of his opponents, but none more exciting than his championship match.

Around 40 seconds into the match, Reid lifted Louisville Trinity's Brad Hitchings into the air and slammed him on the mat.

Reid secured Hitchings for the pin just 50 seconds into the match.

"I try not to think about the pressure of being the reigning state champ," said Reid. "I just go out there and wrestle each match as if I were unranked."

Reid has a somewhat different approach than Peace before the match. he can be seen listening to music and jumping around to get ready for his match.

"I don't think too much about the match before I go out there. I just relax and go with the flow," Reid said.

Peace's "quiet intensity" makes for an entertaining match.

"Reid and Peace are at a different level than most of the guys that wrestle," said Ryle coach Tim Ruschell. "If everything stays the same, I don't see anybody beating them in state."

Peace and Reid will wrestle next weekend in a national tournament with the area's best wrestlers.

Neither wrestler has committed to a college yet, but they are hoping to attract some schools with solid performances, Peace said.

Ryle senior Will Hogben suffered a tough loss in his championship match to Ryan Houchens of South Oldham. Hogben placed seventh at state last season.

Overall, Ruschell was pleased with his team's performance.

"Grundy is a tough team and so is Union County, but we will continue to get better," he said.

"The big thing is staying busy. We want a lot of mat time so we have that experience at the end of the season."

Lakota West's Mike Baurtook home first place in the 285-pound division, beating Shaun Smith from Winton Woods.

Winton Woods' Joe Booker won the 152-pound division by pinning Conner Coyle of Ryle at the 1:37 mark.

Harrison wrestlers compete in Tates Creek Duals

By Joey Lewis, sports writer

The Harrison County Thorobred wrestling team traveled last Saturday to compete in its first match of the season, the Tates Creek Duals. The Breds, working with a roster that is incomplete due to the long play-off run by the football team, had a long, difficult day.

?We made a very poor showing and there?s really no blame on anyone but myself,? said Coach Russ Riegel. ?This tournament was a little early for us, overlapping football, and we were just plain not ready mentally or physically. We don?t have a full team without our football players, but some of our new kids did very well and some of our veterans had a terrible day. We just couldn?t get on track and let it get away from us.?

The Breds were able to win their first match against Lawrence County with a score of 48-24. After that, they fell in four consecutive matches

to Campbell County 51-21,

Connor 41-33,

Union County (ranked pre-season No. 1 in the state) 76-0,

and North Hardin 45-33.

?We could have and should have come away 4-1 and maybe lost to Union,? said Riegel.

Individual Harrison County scores by class were:

103 lbs. none;

112 lbs. Andy Lenz 3-2;

119 lbs. none;

125 lbs. none;

130 lbs. Cody Ward 4-1;

135 lbs. Trevor Maxwell 1-0;

135 lbs. Caleb Berry 4-1;

140 lbs. Chris Brunker 2-3;

145 lbs. Beau Sanders 4-1;

152 lbs. Seth Coy 1-3;

160 lbs. Bob Barkley 0-3; Charles Ammerman 1-0;

171 lbs. Brandon Barnett 1-0;

189 lbs. Brett Williams 1-2;

215 lbs. Itai Bear 2-3;

285 lbs. (heavyweight) Dan Kiskaden 2-0.

?This was just a tough day,? said Riegel. ?But the question is did we learn anything? And you can bet that we did. When we become a team and get our full team assembled, we?ll be ok!?

The Breds? wrestlers were scheduled to be in action again last night hosting Dixie Heights on the Hilltop.

Their next action will be on Saturday as they travel to the Nelson County Duals.

Mat Hawks face battle to retain region dominance

It has been a decade since the LaRue County Mat Hawks have lost a regional dual. It has been a decade since the Hawks have not been a #1 seed for the Dual State Championships. It has been a decade since the Hawks have not been the favorites heading into the season to capture a regional championship. All that has changed this year for the Hawks and this Friday the Hawks are the underdogs as they host John Hardin at 7:30 p.m. for a regional dual.

Diante Wright attempts to pin a Calloway wrestler before time ran out on Thursday night's rumble

Braves charged on without three starters

Jerritt Hovey / Advocate Sports Editor

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Union County Braves defeated Calloway County last Thursday night with a victory of 78-0. Pinning ten out of their 14 weight divisions, the Braves made sure that they walked away with the win.

The following Saturday, the Braves traveled to Ryle High School in Boone County for their Ryle Raider Rumble. There were 15 teams from the Tri-State area and while missing three key wrestlers, Jake Wempe, Diante Wright and Levi Griggs, to ACT testing, the Braves were still able to come in second at the tournament. First place went to Grundy with a score of 288.5. Union's score was 277, while Ryle's was 242 and South Dearborn was 224.

Union County's individual scores were Neal Reburn (103) in seventh, Jarvis Elam (112) second, Aaron Carr (119) fifth, Matt Young (125) third, Caleb Ervin (130) second, Luke Ervin (135) second, Isaac Ervin (145) first, Josh Willet (152) fourth, Mitch Ervin (160) first, Jarrod Burke (171) fourth, Isaac Thomas (112) seventh and Tim McKenney (189) placing eighth.

During the Raider Rumble, there were three really key matches that stood out to Coach Walls. The first match was that of Mitch Ervin. Ervin was able to pin Josh McCowen, a wrestler from Grundy, and placed first. Another key match was between Caleb Ervin and Louisville Trinity student, Grant Ohlmann. Ohlmann is the Power Lifter Champion at Louisville Trinity.

The last key match that Coach Walls was impressed with was not a winner but was still a good match nonetheless. It was between Aaron Carr and Jeremy Hurley. Hurley, another student from Grundy, is ranked number one in Virginia as an All-American wrestler.

"Being down three starters and still coming in second is not bad," Coach Walls said. "Once we get those starters back, we'll be a force to reckon with. I like to tell the boys that it's not a sprint, it's a marathon."

The Braves will travel to Harrison this Friday and Saturday for the 10-Team Duals. Teams hosted at the Dual will be Forest Park, Southridge, South Spencer, Heritage Hills, Reitz, Tell City, Memorial, Harrison, Louisville Trinity and Union County. The Duals will begin at 5 p.m. Friday night and 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Mat Cats win at Bourbon, struggle at Nelson duals

By Staff Reports

The Anderson County Bearcat wrestling team recorded a nice win at Bourbon County last Wednesday but were overmatched in four of five matches Saturday at the Nelson County duals.

Wednesday, Anderson defeated Bourbon County 57-24 despite not having any wrestlers in the 103- and 130-pound weight classes. Not having a competitor in a weight class hurts in team scoring as the match is recorded as a fall, or six points for the opponent.

Anderson's Ben Joseph (119 pounds), Tom McNaughton (171) Marcus White (189) and Zach Cotton (285) all recorded pins.

Saturday, the Bearcats fell to four very strong programs but managed a tie against Bullitt Central, a program that is a defending regional champion.

Christian County defeated the Bearcats 56-24 and Harrison County, ranked 13th in the state coaches' poll, notched a 55-24 win over the Bearcats before the Bullitt Central match, which ended in a 42-42 tie. Louisville St. Xavier put up a 60-24 win over the Bearcats while North Oldham, one of the budding programs statewide, defeated the Bearcats 54-27.

Individually, Joseph and White had an outstanding day on the mat, garnering 5 victories in 5 tries. White pinned 2 opponents, while Joseph had one fall. Cotton also had a very good day, picking up 4 wins with 2 pins. Corey Vincent (125), Devin Jett (135) and McNaughton all had 3 wins with 2 pins. Other Anderson wrestlers with at least one pin on the day were Hunter Lilly at 112 pounds and Ricky Kaelin at 140.

Harrison wrestlers sweep their competition

20071212-113048-081-081006.jpg

Photo by Donald Richie -- Mike Cordray tries to get in a good position against his Western Hills opponent last Wednesday in the Wrestling Breds home opener. Leading8-2 with just over three minutes in the match, Cordray secured the win by a fall.

By Joey Lewis, sports writer

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, the Harrison County Thorobred wrestlers hosted their first home meet of the young wrestling season and their first tri-meet in eight years in the Southside Elementary gym.

The Breds came away from the evening with two wins, defeating both Dixie Heights and Western Hills.

?That?s a good way to start the season, two wins in one night,? said Breds? Coach Russ Riegel.

In the first match, Dixie Heights defeated Western Hills by a score of 36-24.

The second match of the meet was a 46-24 win over Dixie Heights for the Breds.

Senior co-captain Josh Ashbrook, who was in the Breds? line-up for the first time this year due to the extended football season, performed very well in his first match.

Ashbrook scored two take-downs and a near fall for a 6-1 lead in the first period against Dixie Heights. A take-down by Ashbrook in the second period increased the lead to 8-1 heading into the third period. He scored five more points for a 13-3 major decision worth four team points.

In the fourth period, the Breds? took the lead and the match was never in doubt.

To end the match Itai Bear, wrestling in the 215 lbs. division, lost by a fall in 0:19. Dan Kiskaden, weighing-in at 200 lbs. but wrestling in the heavy-weight division against the 230 lbs. 15th-ranked wrestler in the state, lost by a fall in 1:16.

The second match for the Breds was an important match. It served as the preliminary round match for the Region 7 Super Duals to be held at Dunbar High School on Dec. 20 and 21.

Harrison County came away with a big 77-24 victory over Western Hills.

In the first period, Harrison?s Mike Cordray, who was in the line-up for the first time, won a hard-fought match by a fall in 3:21. Cordray was leading 8-2 at the time with four points coming just before the fall.

In the second period, Breds? freshman Brandon Barnett defeated KHSAA ranked wrestler Josh Bell by a fall in 5:05 in his second match of the year.

?Brandon should be one of our studs during the next three years,? said Riegel.

In the third period, the Breds? Kiskaden again found himself facing a larger heavy-weight wrestler in Western Hills? 265 lbs. Jacob Bowles. This time Kiskaden pinned Bowles for the win in 3:49.

On Saturday, the Breds were on the road for the Nelson County Duals, where they came away with a 5-0 record on the day.

In their first match, the Breds? defeated Bullitt County by a 46-24 score.

Harrison?s Andy Lenz faced the No. 7 ranked James Badgett in the match. Lenz started off slow but got two take-downs in the first period and put his opponent on his back in the second. In the third period, Lenz again put Badgett on his back, earning a major decision and a 13-4 lead.

Ashbrook was called on in the match to defeat a fourth-ranked wrestler in Bullitt?s Jeremy Walls. He did just that in what proved to be a very good match for spectators, scoring two near falls in the third period for a 4-0 lead.

Barnett won for the Breds in both the 171 lbs and 189 lbs spots.

?This match was a great morale builder for the next four,? said Riegel.

In the second match of the day, the Breds? beat Anderson County by a score of 50-30.

The highlight of the match was a win by a fall for Ashbrook in 0:29 that proved to be the fastest fall of the meet.

The Breds? third match was a 40-27 win over Christian County.

Harrison gave up one forfeit in the 285 lbs. class to lose six points and lost one decision in overtime and lost another by a fall on the mat.

Senior co-captain Beau Sanders got the meet?s fastest fall with a time of 0:32.

Barnett moved up to 189 lbs. class to win with a fall in 1:44.

In the fourth match of the day, the Breds came away with another win, this time a 61-18 margin over Franklin County.

Barnett picked up another win in a close 5-2 match against Franklin.

In the fifth and final match-up for the Breds, they defeated hosts Nelson County by a 40-30 score.

Harrison County was put at a disadvantage by giving up 18 points in forfeits while Franklin County did not have to forfeit in the match.

The team showed up to big in the first period, however, five falls recorded by Lenz, Trevor Maxwell, Chris Brunker, Seth Coy and Bob Barkley for 30 Harrison County points.

Ashbrook and Sanders both overcame fatigue to win their decisions. Ashbrook won 5-0 and Sanders won 7-4, both taking the full six minutes to get their victories.

?They both have to work to be the best,? said Riegel. ?They both realize what it will take to be the champion.?

Harrison County?s Lenz was named the school?s Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Sanders has led the team so far this season, putting up an 11-1 record. Lenz is close with a 10-2 mark on the season. Caleb Berry has posted a 9-3 record for the Breds and Ashbrook and Barnett are both 7-0 on the season.

Harrison County?s current season record is 8-4.

The Breds were scheduled to return to the mats last night as they traveled to meet Covington Holmes and Simon Kenton.

They will again be in action Saturday, taking to the road to participate in the Johnson Central Duals.

Campbell County wins NKAC duals: Camels pay back Ryle, which also advances

BY ADAM BAUM | ABAUM@ENQUIRER.COM

Campbell County won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference duals Saturday, beating Ryle in the finals 49-21.

The two-day tournament was hosted by Dixie Heights and crowned Campbell County as the top-team in the NKAC.

It also means that Campbell County and Ryle will represent the NKAC in the state tournament duals.

The Camels had seven wrestlers finish first and five others finish in the top four.

Fans present for the final match between Ryle and Campbell County described it as, "The loudest and most exciting match of the tournament," and they were right.

Both teams went back and forth early on, trading victories, but soon enough Campbell County took control.

Possibly the most exciting match was between Campbell County senior Talon Deinlein and Ryle's Matt Aylor in the 130-pound weight class. The match was close throughout, but Aylor took the lead in the third period 4-3. With around ten seconds left, and the score still 4-3, Deinlein threw Aylor onto his back and recorded five points of back-exposure to win the decision 8-4.

Deinlein injured his ribs earlier in the day, but fought through the pain for his teammates

"I just pulled out a throw and thought whatever happens, happens," said Deinlein. "That was a risk I was willing to take."

Deinlein placed third in his weight class.

Campbell County and Ryle wrestled head-to-head three weeks ago, and Ryle came away with the victory.

"They thumped us pretty good," said Campbell County coach Mike Bankemper. "The fact that we came back after getting beat and made those improvements is important to our success as a team."

Aylor and Deinlein wrestled in that match three weeks ago and Aylor won a close decision. "You have to want it, and you can't be afraid to lose," said Deinlein. "Just keep your head up, don't get down on yourself and keep at it no matter what."

The standout wrestler for Ryle was junior Will Hogben.

Hogben, eighth at state as a sophomore last season, finished second in the 189-pound weight class Saturday, winning seven of his eight matches.

"We wanted to win our conference," said Hogben. "I have some great competitors in my weight class, and that helps me get ready for the state tournament."

The Campbell County first-place finishers had their way with the field, winning 50 matches and only losing one.

Those finishing first were: seniors Jeff Weckbach (125), Toby Liang (145), Thomas Brownfield (171) and Billy Fuller (285), with junior Caleb Schneider (119) and sophomores Korey Shotwell (140) and Jacob Lee (160).

Scott and Simon Kenton both wrestled well.

Scott wrestled eight matches and won six of them, while Simon Kenton won five of its eight matches. Scott beat Simon Kenton 36-35 to finish third out of the nine teams.
