SHEPHERDSVILLE - Success breeds success.

That is definitely on the mind of Bullitt Central wrestling coach Josh Durham as his Cougar team goes after an unprecedented third straight regional wrestling championship this season.

A year ago, the Cougars accomplished the feat with wrestlers in just 12 of the 14 weight classes. Now, Durham has 29 wrestlers out for the team and he certainly expects to fill each weight class this winter.

Not all of the weight classes will be filled by veterans, but there are eight wrestlers back in the program who competed in the regional last year.

"I'm thrilled," Durham said of the increased participation this winter. "I think part of it is word of mouth. Some just wanted to give it a try. I think the success has helped also. The prospect to come out and compete for a team that could win a regional title is important."

Bullitt Central had a few more wrestlers when the season started a year ago, but lost some for various reasons over the four-month season. To keep more wrestlers out this year, Durham will put some of the younger wrestlers in a regional junior-varsity meet as well as a JV state meet.

There will be a few wrestlers that will thin themselves out, but the numbers are encouraging for the long-term success of the program which is entering its fifth-season of existence and the third under Durham.

"I hope to have 20, solid, dedicated wrestlers," the coach said.

Obviously, Bullitt Central is thinking three-peat with the return of some of their top wrestlers as well as having a full squad.

"It is the goal," Durham said with an emphasis on "the". "The problem is that I have a lot of new wrestlers in the varsity line-up.

"My seniors want it and will work for it," the coach added. "It won't be as easy as the last two years and it wasn't easy the last two years. We'll have to step it up."

Bullitt Central could well be the site of the regional meet this year. Western is next in the rotation to host that meet, but there is a question if they will even field a team this year. If not, the meet would fall to Bullitt Central which is scheduled to host it next year.

Heading into the first week of the season, which will be highlighted by the first annual Bullitt Tooth Tournament on Saturday at Bullitt Central, Durham has a number of different options in most of the weight classes.

The top returner in the lower classes is senior James Badgett who finished seventh in the 103-pound division a year ago, a spot higher than he finished as a sophomore. At this point, Badgett will start the season at 112-pounds, but he could still get back down to 103 pounds.

"He wants to be better than last year in state," Durham said. "I'm not real sure where he is aiming. He wants better than seventh."

Badgett started last year up a class before moving back to 103 in the middle of the season.

"He's still eligible for 103," his coach said. "He's 109 right now. I think he'll do fine at 112. He won't have to cut weight and he'll be stronger and healthier. It's his senior year. I'll let him make that decision.

"He's working a lot harder," Durham added. "He knows this is his last year."

If Badgett stays at 112, then Durham will insert sophomore Preston Glass into the 103-pound class. Unlike a year ago, when the Cougars didn't have many small wrestlers, Durham has four wrestlers who could compete in the two smallest groups.

Moving up the ladder, first-year senior Justin Clark is penciled in at 119-pounds while freshmen Randall Daniel, another new wrestler, will compete at 125-pounds.

Bullitt Central has experience at 130-pounds with the return of Tony Tinnell who competed in the regional last year and should contend for a title. Another inexperienced wrestler is junior Patrick Underwood who will compete at 135-pounds.

One of the six football players who will compete for the wrestling team this winter will be junior Akeem Bennett at 140-pounds. Bennett wrestled a year ago, but there was a log-jam at his weight level and he could not fit into the team's regional plans. Still, Durham is expecting big things from Bennett this winter.

Senior Michael Chaney will be a strong wrestler at 145-pounds as he has been to the state meet each of the past two years.

Move up two weight classes could be senior Justin Walls who will go at 152-pounds this season. He started at Bullitt Central at 112-pounds and then was at 135-pounds for the next two seasons. He could wrestle at 152- or 145-pounds this season.

The middle weight classes also include junior Dylan Rutledge at 160-pounds. He wrestled dome at the JV level a year ago.

One of the area's best wrestlers is junior Jeremiah Walls who will compete at 171-pounds to start the season. He has been to the state meet each of the past two seasons and just missed medaling a year ago. He could drop down to 160-pounds.

In the bigger classes, Corey Allen, a senior, returns at 189-pounds while sophomore Dalton Hook, another football player, will wrestle at 215-pounds.

The heavyweight will be sophomore Larry Brown who advanced to the state meet a year ago.

Durham will also be looking at some point this season to get some action for Eric Abbott at 135- or 140-pounds as well as for Jarett Jetter at 215-pounds.

"For a lot of the new guys, there are people underneath them who could step up and take their varsity spot," Durham noted.

While wrestling is important for most of the team, it is really a four-month sport for most of them. There is no AAU summer circuit like for basketball players.

"We work on the theory that it's not the time you work, but the time you put into that work," Durham said. "I will say they have been very serious about working hard every day."

Bullitt Central has a busy schedule this year, but once again there is very little action at home. The only matches in the Cougars gym will be the Bullitt Tooth Tourney this Saturday. The only other home match is set for Jan. 30 when Pleasure Ridge Park, Meade County and Southern will be at Bullitt Central.

The regional tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 with the state championships the next week in Frankfort.

Mat Hawks must overcome inexperience in region meet

This season for the LaRue County Mat Hawks promises to be quite different than any season experienced by head coach Gary Canter. Previous teams have sported wrestlers who were older and experienced to inexperienced, but older in age. Never before has he started a season with a knowledgeable, but inexperienced and young team like this year.

Plenty of contenders

SK, Campbell offer challenge to Ryle

By Terry Boehmker

Post staff reporter

Ryle's three-year reign as 6th Region wrestling champion could be in jeopardy this season, according to coach Tim Ruschell.

Even though his team was voted No. 1 in a preseason poll of local coaches, Ruschell expects the regional tournament to be "a dogfight" because Simon Kenton and Campbell County also have talented lineups.

"This will be a very interesting regional," Ruschell said, "because the top three teams are all in the hunt for the title."

The regional tournament is two months away, but local teams will get an early idea of how they stack up at the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Duals Tournament on Dec. 14-15 at Dixie Heights.

Ryle won last year's conference tournament with a 7-0 record in dual matches and went on to win the regional tournament, but the Raiders lost seven of the 14 starters on that team to graduation.

Ryle's top returning seniors are defending state champions Bryan Peace at 140 pounds and Mason Reid at 171 pounds.

Peace was voted Wrestler of the Year by local coaches after finishing the season with a 51-1 record. Reid was close behind at 46-2.

Ryle's other returning state qualifiers are sophomores Michael Osborne (112) and Zack Rowland (130), juniors Will Hogben (189) and Jacob Bradford (215) and senior Will Gilliland (145).

It will be up to them and the seven newcomers in the starting lineup to extend the Raiders' string of regional titles.

"Don't count the Ryle wrestlers out," Ruschell said. "We've got some kids who have worked hard in the off-season that could make some noise."

Here's a look at the other wrestling teams in Northern Kentucky listed according to the voting points they received in the pre-season coaches poll:

2. SIMON KENTON - The Pioneers have the potential to be one of the top teams in the state with eight returning starters leading the way.

Juniors Robbie Vaughn and Stephen Norbury won regional weight class titles last year and three of their teammates - Ben Winkler, Matt Neal and Jordan Wilson - were second-place finishers.

The other Pioneers looking for a return trip to the state tournament are Korey Belew, Ryan Vaughn and Tony Turner.

"If the (vacant) weight classes get filled with the right wrestlers, we will match up with any team in the state," said coach Jim Wilbers.

3. CAMPBELL COUNTY - All five of the Campbell County wrestlers who won regional championships last season are back in the lineup.

The winner's list includes seniors Talor Deinlein, Thomas Brownfield, Kyle Griffith and Billy Fuller and sophomore Korey Shotwell.

The other returning state qualifier on coach Mike Bankemper's roster is junior Caleb Schneider.

4. SCOTT - The Eagles have five returning state qualifiers on the roster with seniors Gabe Supe and Justin Miley heading the list.

"Both of them have been in exceptional weight classes and competed against some of the best in the state," said coach Clinton Bell. "With that experience they should be able to cap off their careers with a state placing."

The coach also expects senior Gary Robbins, junior Evan Holten and sophomore Stephen Supe to make it back to the state tournament in February.

5. CONNER - Wayne Badida enters his 38th season as head coach of the Cougars with experienced wrestlers in eight weight classes.

The returning state qualifiers are seniors Ryan Dillon and Matt O'Bryan, who have been on the varsity roster since they were freshmen.

The other Conner wrestlers who placed in last year's regional tournament are senior Wil Cole and sophomore T.J. Bates.

6. NEWPORT - With more than 30 wrestlers on the roster, coach Jeff Middleton expects to put a full team on the mats this season.

The team leader is junior Jake Ilg, who is moving up to the 215 weight class after posting a 38-6 record and earning a berth in the state tournament at 189 last season.

Sophomores Josh Hale and Nathan Ilg are the Wildcats' other returning state qualifiers.

7. DIXIE HEIGHTS - The Colonels' only returning state qualifiers - Stephen Benson and Tony Heber - are switching weight classes this season.

Benson is moving up to 215 pounds and Heber is dropping to 189, but the seniors still give coach Ken Simmons a good back-to-back scoring combination.

Dixie's other varsity veterans are senior Dylan Curl and junior Joe Gronefeld. The rest are newcomers in the lineup, including four freshmen.

8. HOLMES - Coach Ken Bachman doesn't have enough wrestlers to fill every weight class, but he expects four varsity letter-winners to score points for the Bulldogs.

The veterans are junior D.J. Cooper and sophomores J.J. Thompson, Brandon Wren and Alex Dailey.

Bachman is glad to see Wren back in the lineup. He was sidelined by a neck injury last season after placing fifth in the 2006 regional tournament.

9. BOONE COUNTY - The Rebels return to varsity competition this season with a roster full of newcomers to the sport.

"They have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but very little experience," said coach Mick Raney.

Raney said the ones who have shown the most promise are senior Bobby Seilhammer, juniors Jordan and Justin Bernard and freshman Tyler Gies.

Mat Hawks upset top teams while winning Oldham Super Duals

They wrestled as if they had a chip on their shoulders. As the

LaRue County Mat Hawks headed into Oldham County, the team realized they had something to prove to the rest of the state. In the end, the youthful Mat Hawks left Oldham County with the 2007 Super Dual title leaving fifth-ranked Woodford, eighth-ranked Seneca, and ninth-ranked Simon Kenton fighting for second through fourth places.

Something to prove, this was the cry of the team the week before the super duals. Each day after practice seniors Lucas Carman and Matt Miller would gather the team in the locker room and one would holler,

After a two-year absence, Bullitt Central was back hosting a major wrestling tournament as 16-teams converged on the school on Saturday for the Bullitt Tooth Wrestling Tournament.

(For two seasons when the program was getting off the ground, the school hosted the Sharkbait Tournament, but after a coaching change didn't have an event for two years.)

The final count showed Bullitt Central with three individual titles as senior Justin Walls won at 152 pounds while junior Jeremiah Walls was the victor at 171-pounds. Senior James Badgett was the champion at 112-pounds.
