Ok you challenged me.  From the turn of the century. Union has had 42 state champs.  Woodford 30.

If my Xavier U. math is correct. That gives Woodford 34, Union 23 at the end of 1999.

How about it has been 19 consecutive years that an Ervin family member has qualified for the state tourney.  The last year without a qualifier was 2002.

The 1st time in 14 consecutive years that an Ervin family member will not be in the finals.

Sayre has its 1st state qualifier.   Making 146 KY teams to ever have a state qualifier.

I thought semi-state is technically the first round(s) of the state tournament which would keep the first one alive as Paxton Ervin made it to SS1.

What’s with the second trinity at the bottom of the list, GOO?

That is a really good question. LOL.  I will have to look at my research and see exactly what that is. I find mistakes every time I look at my compilation of data. (probably a typo of some kind.)

Can't seem to find sheldon clark. Martin County will have to start a new list if branson smith wins it. Faridale aka Fairdale

sheldon clark is Martin Co. #13 with 18.  I will combine Sheldon and Martin b/c it was just a name change.

Oh it says “Marian County” made me over look it.

GOO: question for you: What schools did all of the "no longer exist" schools on your list become? Who is Owensboro's one champion?

Ahrens trade closed in 1980

Flaget closed in 1974

St. Joseph closed in 1969

Westport became Westport Middle in 1982

West Hardin Combined with East Hardin to become Central Hardin in 1991

Other schools with Qualifiers that no longer exist are

Millerburg Military Institute closed in 2006

Jessamine County split into East and West Jessamine in 1997

Bush High School became Bush Elementary

Durrett closed after 1981 school year.

Stuart High school became Stuart Middle school in 1982

Aquinas Prep became part of Louisville Country Day in 1967

Thomas Jefferson became Thomas Jefferson Middle School in 1982

Greenville High School became Muhlenberg Sough High School in 1990

Owensboro's state champion was Lance Moorman in 1977 at 105lbs

And yes I am a geek for having done all this research.

Union stretches the lead of state champs to 68, stretches the win streak to 6 in a row, and crowns the youngest champ.

Doesn't this also tie them with Woodford Co for most titles?

Yes, unless you count a couple small school titles.

Interestingly enough I read a write up on Howard Schnellenberger at Flaget High School being recruited by Bear Bryant. I bet those were fun times.
