crazyotto 381 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 “Back in the day” DII champ got a bid to the big dance. Clearly there are guys at the smaller divisions that can compete, Thomas from Williams Baptist comes to mind. Many others to be sure. Should this practice be reintroduced?
Old wrestler 92 Report post Posted March 15, 2018 I love the idea and definitely wish it was still in play. I'm not sure if they eliminated this practice due to A)the lower level divisions not being competitive enough B)the lower divisions were too competitive (stepping on toes) or C)D1 programs felt it was unfair to allow kids to compete for multiple national titles. I know SIUE was extremely competitive throughout the 80's when they were D2. Carlton Haselrig (UPitt Jonestown) is a folklore collegiate wrestling legend, winning 6 NCAA national titles, including defeating future Olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle. If you haven't read Haselrig's Wikipedia, do yourself a favor, he's a freak.
