Maybe....The weight class starts at 70.  If a parent puts a kid on the mat and he/she is successful I will put him on my list.  What does that mean?  Nothing this is just something I put together for people to talk about.

Enough about me what about you.  Are you the tool that said 106 shouldn't be a high school weight?

Are you the tool that went on Ohio wrestling forum and started Kentucky bashing?  What do you have against younger kids wrestling up?  Which one of these younger studs embarrassed you?

Name calling. What a classy guy!!  I’m middle aged by the way no dog in the fight

You’re ranking 4th graders!  All I’m saying is it they’re 9 years old!

You can’t take that least little bit of criticism without name calling?

106 should certainly be a high school weight...just not varsity.

I love Kentucky. Stating high school sports should be, well, you know, for high school students isn’t bashing.

We have enough “wrestling dads” who’ve gone off the deep end in this state. I say it’s a mistake to put 9 year old 4th graders on a middle school team. I think it’s unwise to put a 7th grader on a varsity team regardless of skill level.

I coached middle school and youth here in Ky for 5 years and have coached and reffed in other states too. I don’t say it lightly but dads ranking kids (including their own) at this level is unwise. I was a decent DI wrestler but that doesn’t make my opinion any more or less important.

Our sport is dying in part because kids don’t stick with it. I think it’s partly due to rankings like this. My kid wasn’t much of a wrestler but he just scored a 36 ACT. I’ll take that over a middle school #1 ranking any day.

No reason they can't do both. I can't speak for everyone, but my 2 boys have been able to balance hard work on and off the mat. It hasn't been easy, but I feel pretty confident that their effort has yielded results I am proud of on both the athletic and academic from.

And just for reference, both of my boys were competing at the ms level as 4th graders (Spencer actually 3rd just prior to the 4th grade limitation was implemented).

I believe  that being able to rank  A kid that is 9  is a testament to how far we have came as a state in wrestling. Take it from a guy who wrestled in Kentucky in the late 80s and early 90s and now coach, there still work to do but we have came a long way.  The fact that we can give a nine-year-old kid a middle school platform to wrestle from  makes every West Virginia  and Tennessee middle school wrestling coach  envious because they don’t have that luxury  but all of them wish they could. Keep on hammering kid who ever you are, show them why they put your name up there.  Big thanks from Eastern Kentucky as well for all the work that goes in the report.

I know the "should a middle school kid be in high school sports has been beaten to death.

My one and only comparison is this.  Do you keep a kid who is doing high school academics in middle school? Or do you move him up so he can be challenged at the high school.  What about Covington Latin here in KY? Most of their freshman should be in the 7th grade and graduate when they are 16 sometimes 15.  That means entering college at that 16-17.

Why should sports be any different?

Amen, in this sport we all say you get what you earn if a forth grader does the work and has earned it he gets it. How can that be wrong?

Agreed. I can tell you that I watched this kid earn it on Saturday. He beat a scrappy, tough kid that is two years older than him for 3rd place at his conference tournament. The kid he beat had just beat the number 3 ranked kid in the previous round. Who cares how old you are. Not only that, where is this kid going to competition if he doesn't wrestle middle school? I would imagine this kid would spend about a minute total on the mat in most youth tournaments and wind up with  a gold medal and no good experience or learn anything to make him better from it.

Congratulations to your son getting a 36 on his ACT!! Mine’s a straight A student and was ranked as a 4th grader at one time too. He loved it as much as the report card. The reason why is because he’s a, KID!!! You might want to tell Mark Hall, Zeke Escalara, David Carr, Nathan Boston that being a 7th grade state champ in HS was “unwise”. And yes I’m forgetting some but these are the most recent examples that it does benefit kids and helps them along the way to have a successful life. Not just in wrestling but school and most importantly LIFE. I know each one of the kids personally and can tell you they are top notch young men. Now with your thought process, we should limit their success because it doesn’t fit your thought process. If you truly are a wrestler and fan of the sport, promote and embrace it, don’t tear it down.

Only 3 of the kids ranked at 106 Are in middle school guess the rest of the kids shouldn't be able to wrestle... Smart logic.

Heck back in the stone age (MY time) the lowest classes were 98, 105, 112.  According to the above logic I would not have been varsity until my Jr. year.  Most likely in my case I would have quit wrestling by that time if not able to compete until then. (We did not have a JV team).

I say it pretty much every year. We consistently see our best wrestlers coming through MS under 100 pounds. Not saying there are not great wrestlers above that. Just saying our best concentration of talent is always in the lower half. And when you look at the best HS wrestlers this state has seen over the last 20 years, many of them came through as small ms kids; a number of them down in the 70/75 range.

I agree with your statement. It has seemed in the past that the best wrestlers in MS have mostly been under 100lbs. Although this year I believe we have a mix of really great wrestlers at all weights. If you look at who "most" people would consider the top 6-8 kids in MS this year you will get kids ranging in almost all weights.

Also if a kid is wrestling at a high enough level while they are in 4th grade to be ranked. Rank them! My son has wrestled middle school since the 2nd grade. We didn't have rankings for MS then so I didn't have to worry about it lol.
