Thomas More - 8th place Washington and Jefferson Tournament

The Thomas More College wrestling team finished eighth out of 17 teams at the Washington & Jefferson College Invitational today (Saturday, November 12, 2016) at the Henry Memorial Center in Washington, Pennsylvania.

First-year John Shirkey (Erlanger, Ky./LaSalle (Ohio)) finished fifth at 133 as he had a pin in 1:06 in his first match, then lost 5-3, but finished the invitation with a 4-1 win and a pin in 4:31.  First-year Avery Jones (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) fell 17-12 in the first match, but then had a pin in 1:20 and one in 0:55 and had a 9-3 win to place sixth in the 184 weight class.

At 125, first-year Cody Shultz (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) fell 14-6 and was pinned in 4:14.  Four other Saints competed at 133 besides Shirkey.  Sophomore Aaron Cox (Ross, Ohio/Ross) had a 4-3 win, an 8-1 loss and a 5-2 loss.  First-year Dale Hensley, Jr. (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) had a 1:04 pin and then was pinned in 1:25 and fell, 8-3.  First-year Alex Holt (Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) recorded a 0:58 and 0:35 pins and then was pinned in 2:13 and had a 15-0 loss.  First-year Parker Buschelman (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) had a 10-2 loss, a 7-2 win, a 5-2 win before being pinned in 4:31.

In the 141 weight class, first-year Damian Walton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Taylor) had a 13-2 win, a 14-7 loss a 6:23 pin and a 12-3 loss, first-year Brandon Powers (Owensboro, Ky./Apollo) had an 8-3 loss, a pin in 3:41 and was pinned in 6:23 and first-year Derrick Soper (Lexington, Ky./Bryan Station) was pinned in 0:51 and 3:41.

Four Saints competed at 149.  First-year Kegan McAlpine (Chesaning, Mich./Chesaning) had a 7-5 loss and was pinned in 1:42 and first-year Kolin McAlpine (Chesaning, Mich./Chesaning) had a 6:08 and 5:49 pin and was pinned in 0:23 and 0:42.  First-year Ryle Regan (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) had a 5-1, a 5:00 pin, but had a 5-2 loss and a was pinned in 1:58, while first-year Eric Knittle (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) was pinned in 4:21 and had a 26-8 loss.  First-year Malachi Marlow (Mount Orab, Ohio/Western Brown) competed at 157 and had a 4:37, 4:03, 3:44 pins, but fell 9-8 and 10-7.

At 165, first-year Latear Dukes (Barryton, Mich./Chippewa Hills) fell 13-2, first-year Tre'Von Ward (Avendale, Ohio/Norwood) fell 17-2 and 5-3, first-year Austin Sutphin (Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) was pinned in 0:25, then had pins of 6:30 and 2:07 before falling 3-2 and first-year Jacob Bria (Glenn Ferris, W.Va./Fairfield (Ohio)) had wins of 17-2 and 6-4, but losses of 15-4 and 6-2.  Two Saints competed at 174 as first-year Andrew Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had wins of 11-7 and 10-2 and losses of 18-5 and 7-6 and first-year Dalton Jones (Ross, Ohio/Ross) had a 14-3 win and a 12-6 loss and was pinned in 1:20.

Junior Tom Bonaccolto (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional) joined Avery Jones in the 184 weight class and was pinned in 1:58 and had a 14-3 loss.  First-year John Butler (Lake Havasu, Ariz./Lake Havasu) competed at 197 and had a pin in 4:36, but was pinned in 2:41 and had an 8-2 loss.  At 285, first-year Quantavious Kelley (Albany, Ga./Monroe) was pinned in 1:29 and had a 13-2 loss and first-year Ahmad Hameidan (Florence, Ky./Boone County) had pins in 5:45 and 0:30, but had a 13-0 loss and was pinned in 2:28.

Thomas More returns to the mats next Saturday (November 19) when it travels to Findlay, Ohio to compete at the University of Findlay Open

Most college opens if you lose before semis 5th is the best you can do so good showing for Shirkey as well as the rest of the team .Hameidan hanging tough it looks like he's not nearly as tall as most he wrestles I would imagine so if he goes 50 50 any tourney that's pretty impressive although I'm sure he will strive and do better as time goes on .Dalton jones is a tough wrestler seen him here and there for years I'm sure he will do better and better as he goes .
