Well, I didn't get a chance to see much in the way of meaningful results, but with the Raider Rumble looming, we will get a good idea where some of the top kids should be.  Early indications are that we will see another nailbiter of a team race at state between the same teams as last year (Union County, Campbell County, St Xavier), but I wouldn't count out Trinity or Woodford County jumping up to steal a spot in the top 3.  Right now all of the top dogs (prior champs) in the light weights are lined up in separate weights.  If that should change we could see a shift in the team results.

I'm not sure if he is wrestling this year or not but Henry Clay had a heavyweight that looked really good with limited experience last year named Maurice Gibson. He defeated Jorge Mendes #7 from Bourbon Co. 8-2 in the regional tournament last year.

Only one freshman ranked above 145 lbs. Just an observation. Some exciting matchups looming for sure. Oldham looks loaded with sophomores with six in the top ten.

Just goes to show that the kids in upper weights who compete at say 170 and up as freshman have a tough go at things. Their are exceptions ATM, miller, Mathews, mueller. But those guys are just flat out good and impressive.

I think as a state we are moving to the next level where we have a "generation" of talented high school kids now who are very talented and experienced and it will be much tougher for freshman and especially 8th graders to jump up and compete. There will always be exceptions, but I believe they will be few and far between from here on out. And at some point in the near future I think the KHSAA will eliminate MS kids from competing up.

I don't like the middle schoolers competing at the high school level. I realize I'm in the minority here though.

Hopefully numbers keep growing and we get both high quality and high quantity. Only 60-70 kids per weight class state wide. It's impressive to see the top end talent coming from such a small pool. Lots of Division I talent in the Bluegrass.

I believe the talent in ky has really grown over the last 5 years. If you look at how many kids have moved onto college for wrestling it's apparent. I would say that this because the amount of kids that continue to train and compete all year long.

As far as the middle school kids I believe that they should move up if they are able to compete at the high school level. I believe it is no different than when a 4th or 5th grader moves up to middle school. I believe this drives kids to get better and continue to grow. I thought it was awesome last year to watch sheffer and androni place at the high school tournament as 8th graders. The work they put into making that happen must have been tough. I think that motivates other kids to try and follow the same path. Talk about mental toughness.

I hope more kids continue to train and accomplish these same goals. I think it helps our competition as a state top to bottom.

I'll take Jason hall over Jose Vega 8 match out of 10 any day of the week. I think Bobby Poynter could make his way in to the finals

I understand you supporting your guy. But for ranking purposes you are comparing a state champ to a state qualifier. Nothing to discuss.

Not to sure if it will just be these two battling it out.

In the 90's and into 2000 they changed the rule allowing middle school kids to compete at HS a few times. A few other states allow it. As long as they earn it and not just thrown in to fill spots it is fine and don't think it will change. I really really don't llike the 32 man bracket at state and only one qualifying tournament now. The district- regional format was good. Most regions you have to win one match to make it to state. My has grown at lot the past 5 yes, in fact its been growing a lot the past ten. As a senior in 2001 when I received a D1 schalorship it had been a good four yrs since a real D1 quality kid( Joe Carr Jr) since then there have been several receive schalorships well deserving with many more to come in the future. The addition of middle school and youth wrestling in ky and new HS programs have contributed the most to the improvement in ky wrestling

I'd say several of the top 113 will see each other at Ryle next weekend should be a good bracket

I thought Sean fausz was smaller than that, surprised to see him at 138 being a Fargo all american and on the us fila team I think he would make a great match up with Brock at 32

Kahl is a good wrestler. He and brown will meet up this weekend at raider rumble. Just curious but how is Stephan's (mcc) ranked #1? 2 guys ranked behind him placed at state and he didn't. Is it because he's a senior at 106?

Excuse me 3 guys ranked behind him placed at state and he didn't

Good question. He was injured at state and yes a senior at 106 is tough.

I think I remember Shaefer just workin him in the state tourney.  I believe hurst lost to him by 2 earlier in the year when hurst was down at 106.  He is a strong 106 lber.  He can catch some of these smaller guys in a bad position and stick em.

182 is the toughest class in the state if everyone stays there ,any of the four top kids i saw at the rumble could win state there or possibly completely dominate 170 if they dropped ,I think Mathews and Frankone stay for sure ,not sure about smith i would say hes there as well of the four Courtney looks as if he could make the drop easisest but who knows .doubt any of them go up but they could probably do damage there as well .
