  1. Hope everyone is having a good summer so far! I don't get on this forum too often so I apologize if someone has already shared similar info on here. I finally got some down time and did a quick analysis of the semi-state format. As you all know the big discussion last year was whether to do 4 or 2 semi states. I personally was in favor of the 2 semi state option as I believe it offers us the best chance of allowing the 16 best wrestlers in the state to move on to the final round. I had previously done some analysis using @Ranger123 rankings to hypothesize the number of top 8 kids that would be mathematically eliminated if we were to do 4 semi states. Well, now that the tournament has happened we don't need to hypothesize anymore we can look back at the results and put names to the numbers. To do this we simply look through the semi state results, anywhere that a pair of regions has more than 4 kids placing is a kid that would have been mathematically eliminated in a 4 semi state system. Obviously you can make a counter argument that this means another kid in the other two regions was left out, that is true, but at least they had a chance to make it. We have to assume that if all kids are put into a tournament together that the best 8 wrestlers will emerge. In the attached excel file you can find this simple analysis. The conclusion is that because we switched to a 2 semi state system 19 kids were able to make it to the final round that would have been mathematically eliminated otherwise. Of those 19 kids, 5 went on to earn medals at the final round. Like I said these aren't just numbers, these are real people that worked their butt off all year to get to that tournament, here are their names: Brock Gross - LaRue County (Placed 7th in the state) Trent Cano - Great Crossing (Placed 5th in the state) Anthony Condi - Frederick Douglass (Placed 6th in the state) Aiden Zinser - Scott (Placed 8th in the state) Brandon Burchett - Faridale (Placed 6th in the state) Brayden Blevins - Simon Kenton Aiden Marquis - Conner Andrew Tarango - Bullitt Central Petey Graham - Ohio County Caige Clark - Ohio County Hunter Creech - Simon Kenton Caleb Jarvis - Fairdale Malachi Young - Great Crossing Deamdrell Mattison - Central Nicholas Horn - South Oldham Kyle Richmond - Campbell County Gillam Nicodemus - Ohio County Blaize Cart - Apollo Kolton Adkins - Johnson Central These are the people we did it for. These are the reason you should be ok with driving a little further and wrestling a long semi state tournament. Because we owe it to everyone of these kids to ensure they have a fair chance to make it to the final dance. Over the last few years we have posted a lot of negative about the decisions of the KHSAA and the changes they have made, I've been a big part of that too. I'm not saying this format is perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But we went into this season with the plan to wrestle 4 semi state tournaments again, the KHSAA heard our concerns and adjusted the plan because of them. I want to urge all of you coaches and fans to reach out to your local rep on the KHSAA board of control and thank them for making this change. I think it's important that those people here us being thankful when things are improved rather than only hearing us complain to them when we're not happy. Again, I'm not saying this is perfect. Let's keep moving forward in trying to improve our championship and our sport in general, but let's be sure to recognize and be thankful when we do see some positive motion. A Better Post-Season Proposal

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree, and must have missed that when reading back through it. I had to fight with my emotions on every sentence when typing this, unfortunately they got the best of me here. We have to try to keep our suggestions to people in places of power positive. Otherwise we're going to dismissed immediately.

I must have missed this, I haven't noticed this at the events I have been too so far this season. I still believe there are facilities that could accommodate this format with multiple gymnasiums or rooms. Yes, it's an additional complication but nothing that can't be overcome.

So the 16 man bracket has to be run in 2 days regardless to avoid the 5 match rule. However, as far as spacing there are multiple gyms that are capable of fitting 4 mats with the required 5' spacing between wrestling areas (circles). With the proposal we are introducing the number of people in attendance should be essentially the same as the current proposal the KHSAA has. With the exception that we will still need to have room for the additional 112 wrestlers that are competing in the second session. In the proposal I stated that it will be less than 800, this is a fairly rough estimate where I rounded up significantly to generate a safe number for attendance planning. I have recently been informed that there are maybe not as many gyms that can accommodate these numbers as I had originally thought. However with this proposal only 2 gyms of this size are required. While with the KHSAA solution 4 separate venues of the same size would be required.
  5. Obviously a vast majority of us are not pleased with the currently proposed solution. It may be too late, but we can't let this go silently. I have attached an alternate proposal for this post season. The only chance we have to turn this thing around, if there is any at all, is to start asking for the same thing. I am urging all of you to read through this proposal and get behind it. The attached proposal outlines why the current solution is not acceptable. 46 of the top 10 ranked kids in the state are mathematically eliminated from contention already. That is 46 kids that have worked for years to get on the podium that the KHSAA is slamming the door on. Then it goes on to outline a new post season setup and its advantages. The new setup is as follows: Regional Tournament as usual 2 semi-states (Regions 1-4 and 5-8) with top 4 from each region. 16 man brackets. 16 man state championship, top 8 from each semi state. Next it outlines how a "COVID Friendly" 16 man bracket tournament could be ran in a normal high school gym with 4 fans per wrestler. And lastly it shows how this setup will not only result in a better and more fair setup for the wrestlers but also generate more revenue for the KHSAA than the other current proposal. I know this is not a perfect proposal and maybe you think that you have a slightly better idea, but we are not going to get anywhere until we all start saying the same thing. We need to work together and take this proposal to the board of control. If we can all stand behind one idea maybe, just maybe we can get them to change this. Otherwise we're going to be stuck with whatever idea they come up with on their own, which obviously is not what we want. At this link you can find the KHSAA Board of control. https://khsaa.org/2020-21-khsaa-board-of-control/ Our best chance is for everyone to have their Coach/AD/Super call their representative and show them this proposal. Please help me spread the word on this and let's see if we can get something done on this finally. Wrestling Post Season Alternate Proposal.pdf
