    1.  First thing that has to happen is that all results must be put in, and be put in relatively quickly along with updating the records portion of track.

    2.  KHSAA must require this, and have consequences for not doing so like in other sports.

    3.  A criteria must be set up that rewards who you wrestled and defeated.

    We already have all 3 of these requirements met for regional seeding the week before states.  This isn't anything new.

    As for ducking, this is a poor reason to avoid seeding.  It's an unfortunate byproduct but will only work to the detriment of the teams that duck in the longterm.

  2. So how can we get this changed?  It's not too late, and these kids deserved an opportunity for the fairest and most accurate outcome, even if it's a little more work for coaches.  I'd also like to see the best state finals possible, not a bunch of lopsided wins.

    It’s a sport looking for a champ. The other spots are luck of the draw.

    This is just silly.  Every sport at every level is looking for a champ in the playoffs, you still seed.

    The seedable teams had a common sense approach and voted PT to the 3. They were going to automatically be the 6 and would have met 3 seed JC in pool play if they didn’t vote.

     What you see as common sense, I see as ignoring criteria. Meanwhile PT gets rewarded with the easier path to the finals while JC and BC battle it out.

  4. I'm curious if there's another way that KY USA could be handling insurance other than forcing all athletes to upgrade to a whole membership?  Is there a one time fee, for example?  Requiring the whole membership basically triples the cost of this event for most kids, since most will not have the whole membership and likely won't have a need it in the future.

    If there's no better way, then I understand.  I'm just looking to knock down every barrier we can, and I know for many of the kids that I coach that cost is a major deal breaker for them.  We train all off season for close to no cost, and I'd like to continue to make it accessible to everyone.

    instead of bashing it, why not offer a solution that makes sense. We didn’t just pull some crap out of our rear end. This has been something we’ve had to look at since Christmas.

    myself, Teater, Ashbrook, Che and Spencer aren’t hard to find.

    Settle down.  I asked who decided it and when, and now you've given me a few names.  Thanks for that.  But I still wonder about the system of decision making.  For example, middle school isn't sanctioned, but we have a process in place for these types of decisions to be made, with a board of officers, official votes, etc.  Is there something like that for girls wrestling that I just wasn't aware of?

    Wrestle backs do not offer the opportunity to finish out as most would run into 5 match rule in the semi finals or just before….

    OK...  In a 32 man bracket, IF you lost in the first or second round without a bye (worst case scenario) and then won 4 in a row, you'd have locked in top-8 in this situation, even if you have to forfeit out due to the 5-match rule.  But in the system we're planning to use, you are already locked out of the top-8 as soon as you lost that first match.  Even if it was against the #1 seed.  So I would prefer we just let wrestle backs happen until they can't.

    If it were your athlete, would you rather be forced to forfeit out and take 8th place, or would you rather have no chance to wrestle back to the top 8 after losing in the first round?  This just reminds me of boys semi-states during COVID, when only top-2 go to states and wrestle-backs were meaningless.

  6. It looks like we limited the field to get to a one day tournament, but then we screwed ourselves by eliminating true wrestle backs.

    It’s crazy to me that all quarterfinalists get to medal, and anyone that loses early can’t wrestle back. When was this decided, and by who?  It puts way too much value in our seeding process, and protecting records.

     I understand the 5 match rule. But we would never do this to the boys.

    It's a great idea.  We are doing a pretty close version of it this year.  We don't have 6-8 dedicated coaches, but that is not for a lack of trying.

    For the record, I was there the first session with my son and it was a great experience.  I'll be encouraging all our off-season wrestlers to attend in June.  I hope other coaches will as well.

  9. I grew up wrestling in PA and the biggest difference I see between KY and PA is numbers. More youth, more middle school, more high school. JV squads with real wrestle offs that pushed the starters to work harder. Individual tournaments that you could be proud of to come in 3rd place, and you definitely wouldn't place if you didn't put in the work.

    Also way less travel and more competitions because every school had a team.

    I believe if you increase the numbers, the competitive spirit will take care of the rest.

    Idk, I could be totally wrong. But that's my theory.

    That’s simply nonsense. The population center is more than “a bit further north” than Taylor county.

    The population center of KY is Willisburg, KY in Washington County, which is 47 minutes north of Campbellsville.  It's 71 minutes from Louisville.

    Louisville is the most populated city, it's not the population center.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Kentucky#:~:text=The center of population of,in the city of Willisburg.

    For reference, it is 371 miles to drive from Paducah Tilghman HS to Johnson Central HS.  That's two big wrestling schools, and if you placed the tournament directly in the center they would each have to travel 185 miles.  Campbellsville isn't perfect, but it is pretty close to that center.

    I'm curious how many 7th and 8th place guys from Semi-State placed at State. If it was more than 10% I would be very shocked.

    This is an interesting question, so I checked... It's 14.3%

    106 - Micah Thompson (8th -> 6th)

    120 - Hunter Luttrell (7th -> 7th)

    138 - Nicholas Armentano (7th -> 7th)

    150 - Aiden Zinser (8th -> 8th)

    150 - Mason Kellett (7th -> 7th)

    157 - Brandon Burchett (7th -> 6th)

    165 - Jack James (7th -> 8th)

    285 - Kaleb Kiely (8th -> 3rd)

    That's 8 out of 56 kids that finished 7th or 8th at semi states, who then went on to place in the final round.

    That's actually a fairly high percentage when you consider that these guys all started with terrible draws against the top 2 guys from the other semi-state.

    Uh, maybe because Taylor County HS is a 320 mile round trip from Northern Kentucky?  Why have a tournament on an early Saturday morning so far away from the state’s population centers?

    It's a big state, where would you like to have it?

    The geographical center of KY is Marion County, which is immediately adjacent to Taylor County, where it was hosted.  The population center of KY is a bit further North, closer to where it was to be originally held.  Unfortunately that fell through.

    Union Co and Paducah showed up with pretty big squads and they travelled as far as anyone in NKY I think.

  13. I like that this post stayed positive, and I don't want to take away from that.  But at the same time I just want to reiterate your 1st item - which is that no one wants the semi-state format.  I want, and I think the kids deserve, a real state tournament with 32 man brackets, and it should be in an arena.

    Yes, two semi-states was far better than 4.  Yes, GRC did a good job and it's a fine venue as far as high schools go. But let's be real, Union County literally took up half the seats all by themselves.  If another school showed up like Union (I wish!) then our venue couldn't handle it.  I know my family was squeezed in like sardines in our little section.  Many people were in seats that couldn't even see the mats because of the standing area in front of the bleachers.  That's obviously not ideal for casual spectating.

    I just feel that if we don't fight for getting the old format back, then we can kiss it good bye forever.

    Other than that, I agree with everything you said!  :)
