    State Finals Video

I spoke with one of the Coaches from Male high School he informed me the KHSAA is implementing a seeding for football the criteria is on their web sight.

    State Finals Video

When I called and talked to Mike Barren about when they (KHSAA) was planning on posting the wrestling finals his response was I don't remember if it was recorded. He then had to ask someone else in the office if it was recorded. Then he explained that a group I'm not sure of the initials FHSA or something like that records sports around the state and that there was a subscription cost of 10.00 to view it and that they felt it wouldn't generate enough revenue so they didn't record it. So The representative for wrestling at the KHSAA didn't know if the finals were recorded. These are the same people that won't seed the state tournament. Now we use Track through out the year so the tournament could be seeded fairly easy and streamed at each table through out the tournament and the finals. This past state meet they had to almost beg to go down to one mat for the finals. I was told they had a time schedule to keep and going down to one mat would slow that down and keep them from getting finished and out of the arena on time. If you remember the year before the officials had to roll up the mats at the end of the tournament now that took about 45 minutes to an hour. This year the coaches rolled all the mats up but one for the finals in ten minutes which theoretically would get them out earlier and made the finals better. My point is there is logical realistic way to improve the state meet making it a better experience for everyone involved. An example of how contradictory they are funds were raised to the have medals made and to purchase brackets that represent the work the boys put in rather than the bus token the KHSAA gives out. The KHSAA said they couldn't give them out on the podium so this last year they were made into plaques. The reason was that it wouldn't be fair to other sports that don't have the revenue to do that. So if their goal is everyone gets the same thing why are the basketball and football tournaments seeded and recorded. If we can't have someone at the KHSAA that has this sports best interest in mind. We can at least let them know what changes we are looking for as a group. Now I don't know how to do this but I think an online petition needs to be started with the changes that need to occur (seeding, video, location ect.). Having coaches parent ect. sighing it would have a stronger impact than one call hear and there. There is strength in numbers.

I spoke with the KHSAA and they did not record it. The NFHS typically records it and they felt there was not a high enough viewer ship.
  6. The definition of sportsmanship/character was shown in the 145 finals. After Nate Wheeler’s hand was raise Nathaniel Lawrence raised Nate’s hand acknowledging his win. Then in the back warmup area Nathaniel came to me and congratulated me and hugged me and thanked me for working with him this summer and said “Nate is the only person I could lose to and not be upset because I know how hard he’s worked for this.” He didn’t refuse to shake hands, throw his head gear or blame somebody for the loss. He acknowledged his opponents victory which in turn took away what he worked for that’s character. To top it off as I was walking up the stairs Ms. Lawrence waived at me and her and her husband met me at the top of the stairs and hugged me and congratulated me on the win and said thank you for working with their son they also spoke with my wife. This is the definition of Character/ Sportsmanship from an outstanding young man and his family. Who to watch

Watch for this Name M.Hall from South Oldham
  8. It's great we had three place first and a forth. Let's look at the tournament overall. I can only comment on what I saw. K. Kulmer I only saw one of his matches but he looked like a freight train he ran through the kid he wrestled. W. Andreoni can wrestle with any one he was had some great matches, two college coaches asked me about him. Several of the lighter weights from Trinity and St-X won matches. R.Morgan, M. Ocasio, C. Fink and J. McClintic both went 3-2. There was a huge improvement overall in the level of wrestling from our state. I watched several go 0-2 last year. As for the brackets I understand you can't separate kids from one state but at 141 all of them on one side is not good. In the seeding criteria it asks that you put which school or club you are with so they can separate those kids. So two at 148 same club meet in the quarters, so apparently that didn't apply. In the big picture our state is improving each year. Great Job Guys

    College Combine

This past summer I took my son to a college combine in NJ. We met with several coaches that shared that they struggle to get front of large groups of good kids to recruit from. So Next Level Wrestling club and Invicta wrestling academy will be hosting a Wrestling College Combine April 14-15. "there is a misconception by by many kids that they need to be a state champion or a national placer to wrestle in college. We want kids that want to compete in college that we can develop. Good grades help we just coach-able kids that are willing to do the work". Once we confirm all of the colleges I will post a list. That should be available after the College Nationals Wrestling Combine Next Level Wrestling and INVICTA Wrestling clubs will be hosting a Wrestling combine April 14-15. Our goal is to have 20-25 different colleges D1 through NAIA and 40 wrestlers attend this event. This event is open to Incoming Freshman through Seniors. This will be an opportunity to meet with coaches from different colleges and for them to see you perform. The format will be two days with half the coaches each day. The sessions will consist of skill test, drilling and lots of live wrestling. Each wrestler will receive two t-shirts one for each day their name and weight will be on the back so coaches can identify them. The shirts will be color coordinated for their grade. There will be a bio sheet on each wrestler each coach will receive a folder with a copy of all the wrestler’s bio’s. In between each session coaches will have a chance to speak about their program and what their college has to offer. Location: 50 Vincennes St: New Albany, IN 47150 Time: Both days 9-3 Registration Sat 8:30 Cost: $120.00 Lunch and drinks will be provided each day. Each wrestler is required to have a USA card. The waiver, payment and the Bio sheet must be received two weeks prior to the event. Please send a (photo) head shot. Character

At the region tournament this past weekend at Moore high school one wrestler showed his true character. This past season the 220 from St-X Isaac Marret and Damoreon Travis from Moore had wrestled twice each having a win. At the Dragon during their third match Isaac suffered a knee injury that ended his season. So this past weekend Damoreon was voted the MOW and after he received the award he came directly from the stage to Isaac and tried to give Isaac the award saying some thing along the lines you have been the best competition I've had this year. Isaac said I can't take that you earned it but you can go win a state title that's what I want. I think we need more kids like these two. See Damoreon's interview in the link below. https://www.courier-journal.com/videos/sports/preps/kentucky/2018/02/10/moores-damoreon-travis-winning-most-outstanding-wrestler-award/110300542/

    Jefferson County Tournament of Champions

Lampe wrestled great, any one could see he was struggling with an injury and was in pain. He finished when a lot of guys would have quit. So if that's part of your criteria great. Personally I was impressed with ability to push through. Now others have made great points about the other weights. 113 put it together 132 scored the most team points in the tournament 3 falls and a major in the finals 138 two falls and a major 145 2 falls and a major. So you can argue for any of these guys. We all know most coaches don't go back and look at what went on all day before voting some ballots are turned in before the tournament is over. Now you can't tell me there isn't a bias in the voting based on the school I've seen it for three years now. It started in the coaches meeting this year with comments from lets say some of the less mature coaches. Overall I personally think Lampe was outstanding for pushing through. For the upper weight it could have gone to either the St-X 195 awesome match in OT or the 220 from Moore. Moore got it could have gone either. Both had great matches. doing two one for Most Dominate and one for best match is great idea

    Tylan Tucker

Amen rather than embrace the fact that T. Tucker and many other wrestlers travel out of state to get out of their comfort zones and step up to the challenge. We all know that's what makes a kid better. But you know what I don't see on this forum from his dad or coach's is excuses blaming the ref or what ever crap people come up with. Rather than embrace or support it some find a way to knock it. Amazing absolutely amazing.

    Program Health

My opinion on this subject could go forever but I will try to stick to a few points. What I feel we are missing is expectations. What I mean is over the summer kids from all different programs come to our club and I ask each one of them where does your coach see you next year? Does he see you in a certain weight class or is there any thing in particular he wants you to work on. Of all the kids I've asked one had an answer and I've asked a lot of kids. Ironically he wrestles in Jefferson County and that program isn't struggling and by the way the young man didn't stay a word about a state title his response was a weight class his coach saw him in and certain things he needed to improve on. We have all had that young man that has come to us and he says he wants to quit wrestling because he want's to focus on football. When I talk with them almost everyone of them says that their coach wants them to focus on a certain position and they need to be bigger, stronger ect. An expectation has been put on him and a message that he is needed and it's no secret that many young men these days are lost in where they fit in. Another issue is that many of these young men don't come from family's with wrestling backgrounds and they don'y know what they are capable of. Grappler -of- old "What does he want from wrestling? I often believe they really don't know what they want because they don't know what they are capable of and motivation is so different for each kid. As coaches we need to step up and help them figure that out. As coaches what expectations do we put on our young men not just wrestling grades, life ect. Kids want to part of something they will typically rise to the level of expectation set for them. And when the parents buy in it works pretty well. So my second issue is when we as coaches myself included say I hate dealing with parents "if I could only just coach the kids" well that isn't the real world. Now I know there are exceptions to every situation but for the most part when the Wrestler and the parents know the expectations of the coach they typically improve. You can't change that attitude or culture of a program with out the kids and parents buying in. The bottom line is the CULTURE in some programs needs to change and yes it has to be FUNNNNN. Last year when each of the PENN state wrestlers that won national titles were interviewed they said "I'm just having fun with the sport" or something very close to that. When talking to wrestler who wrestles for Coach Kolat he said "we have fun it's a blast being part of that team". Lastly the issue of burn out we have all heard "I don't want him to Burn out". So let me quote Coach Tom Brands from the IOWA Hawkeyes "there is no such thing as burn out it's a lack of motivation". Now not every kids want to train year round and there is nothing wrong with that but here is nothing wrong with an setting an expectation for the next years season and for them to wrestle/train for a period in the off season a 6,8 or 12 weeks during the summer. If I'm correct doesn't football do summer work outs that aren't optional. The bottom line is that we as coaches have to take responsibility for not doing a better job at managing our sports. There are programs that struggle and there are other programs in the the same region or county that are successful so it can be done we have to mange this situation better.
