    State news

It truly baffles me that it can be repeated over and over and not cause huge concern that our Association is Ok with just getting this ran and over with and not put the best product out their for our sport and these kids. This attitude of “ we should just be thankful” is getting old, while so many states have and are showing that it can be done in the normal format. How can it not be a goal to create the most competitive State as possible. Also “semi-state” is not like an extension of the 1st day of state. You don’t have the ability to wrestle back to a third place at state. Using the same information others are using on this thread as where kids are at (Kentucky Wrestling Forum’s Rankings by Ranger, which always seem pretty accurate). Regions that have 5-6 of the top ten leave home 4 of those wrestlers while other regions that have wrestlers down the list get an automatic trip to state. Also the state race now becomes about the higher ranked teams in same regions eliminating each other while other regions advance wrestlers based on lack of competition. It’s crazy that this whole foundation is built on a governor and his medical sidekick to establish how many people can be together with no ability to make a concession to all post season events to be normal and use a venue that can accommodate this sport.
  3. Well we’re closing in on the State Duals which means State is right around the corner. Any answers yet with what was proposed by our Coaches Association to the KHSAA? I know a few teams submitted a detailed proposal to the Coaches Association on what could work for just this year. Can we get some information on this forum to what we have to look forward to. So far I’ve heard 4 advance out of Regionals to a Semi State(1/2,3/4,5/6,7/8 regions grouped together to make semi state). Then only 2 come out of a semi state to make a 8 man bracket at State in a high school located south of Lexington. Your points from Semi state carry in to State for a team championship. I’ve also heard a proposal to have a Eastern State Champ and Western State Champ and finally I’ve heard small school and a large school state championship was being pushed by some. Hotels are open and the opportunity to travel is there. Why can’t we have the Regionals, advance the too 4 as always to a Semi State, advance the top 4 then have a 2 day 16 man bracket to give the wrestlers the best chance to compete. Most Parents and teams want to travel and if it’s in Lexington, most can get there within a couple hours. The good folks out in Western Kentucky seem ready and eager to travel since Region 1 is full of State Placers that with a 2 man semi state advancement, leaves several state placers at home. Same with Region 5/6 combined. We need to give all the kids our best as parents and coaches. I don’t see the Girls or Boys Basketball championships being watered down or a venue change. Just my 2 cents.

  13. Has anyone discussed or are planning to do any dual tournaments from Kentucky I. Other states like Grand River Rumble, Viper Pit or King of the Ring? I have a few wrestlers that are looking to wrestle over the summer and wanted to see if anyone else has the same with their programs. With the unsureness of the Covid impact, most football players seem to be waiting for their season to start. But we have a couple that are wrestling only and would like to compete.
  14. Cole Thomas, Noah Duke, Rusty Craddock, Levid Rodriquez will be going to Rocky Mountain in 2 weeks. May have 1 or 2 more from Ryle to make the trip.

Open Mats Simon Kenton High School

Thank you Joe and Jarod for offering this up to help NKY wrestlers find mats to work out. As much as we all enjoy training the kids, it seems like all clubs and schools are doing their part to keep everyone safe and to do their part in stopping any chance of spreading the virus. Stay/Get healthy and we’ll all be back on the mats by summertime!!

    Transportation for Virginia Beach Nationals

Any post season wrestling, we pay On our own. As soon as State is over, the school season is over. We travel together and I take as many kids as I can fit in my wife’s SUV. We all share costs on hotels/house rentals etc. if you can make it a family event and add some fun, it’s worth every minute!!

    Takeaways from state

The tournament ran so much smoother with John and Jase Carr and Jason Hale with the track wrestling. I know Ryle high school purchased it and had it on at school Friday at lunch for all the students to cheer on their friends. Also so many friends reached out about watching it on Friday while at work. TRACK was a huge hit this year. Again, thank you to Jon Carr for all he does for this sport. Secondly, I want to say thank you to the Officials this weekend. From the matches I watched and coached, they allowed the wrestlers to wrestle and continued to keep up a good pace. I don’t remember seeing or hearing of a match decided by a call the official made, instead of what the wrestler did. Competition looked awesome and the finals had some incredible matches. Look forward to the KHSAA preplanning for next years roll up of the mats and moving the main mat to the middle. Hopefully they will embrace the fact that all the coaches wrestlers and fans want to always do what showcases these great athletes and continue to put the student athlete first ahead of what’s easier and quicker. Thank you Kentucky Wrestling for another great year!!

    Toughest weight classes at state

I can speak from 3 aspects of this weight class and the need for it. I wrestled lightweight at first and it grew my love for the sport. That love Grew into coaching over the last 12 years in NKY and that love created a 92 lb 8th grade that was allowed to compete at 106 his 8th grade year and finish 3rd. The following year that freshman was at weight at 106 and won 106lb. Without that weight class, high school boys that are freshman and sophomores have 1 less opportunity to fall in love with this sport and go on to grow it with their children. I’ve had the privilege to travel nationally and watch some of the most skilled 106 lb kids compete in the nation. Watched the same young man My son had wrestled 6 times Their freshman year, go on to place at Super 32’s amongst others and become Nationally Ranked today. I get to watch daily the 1st 106 lb Ryle freshman female qualify for state. That same female freshman was a world team champion. Imagine if we listened to closed minded people that only want to shrink the sport because Of a few forfeits or some team allows a 8th grader to fill their line up. I guess kids like my son, Irvin’s, Moore’s, Messerly, Wheeler, Yost etc don’t have a place in the large volume of HS wrestling in Kentucky. Good luck to all the 106, 220 and all the weights in between wrestling this weekend.
