Take Aways From Middle School States

The KHSAA doesn’t even take into consideration the begs and cries from the wrestling community. Good job KFWC for hosting a state tournament how it should be.

    Coach of the Year

Congrats Keith! How did Josh Walls not get it? Just curious. Like last year when union shattered records in the high school tournament and Robert Ervin didn’t receive it. Impressive for Ryle to get 3rd as a team bringing 6 kids tho. Props to them.

    State seeding and match length

I believe it is last years state tournament placement then overall record. The KHSAA released those criteria this week. If they all placed 4th last year at state and carry the same win percentage then who knows?

    State seeding and match length

I believe up until this year, the first round of Indiana's state tournament no points were awarded. Could use that same format here.

    State seeding and match length

If people are worried about a first round bye for top seed, do it like Indiana does and the top seed wins their next match, they receive advancement points for the bye as well.

WKY Semi State Rankings (Region 1/2) - Updated

“Caldwell County shut out Hoptown 61-0: Logan Brown [9-3]” According to former Coach Dennis Walls, that did not happen. https://www.yoursportsedge.com/2021/02/08/hoptown-splits-trigg-duals-matches-w-photos/featured/

    hypothetical question?

What if you were in the semi-finals and won, but during the match an injury occurred. A sprained ankle for example and could not wrestle the finals. Does your opponent receive a head to head victory over you if you have to forfeit the finals match?

    Congrats to Saul Ervin

Went 3-2 at the MAC Championships. Lost to #10 in the semi-finals and lost to #7 in the 3rd place match. Glad he was selected.

    Middle School State

Middle School Region 3 had 12/15 weight classes where everyone who weighed in made state.

    Middle School State

If they do, there will be a lot of kids that make it in. Region 3 has 15 spots to fill. Two weight classes only had 1 kid in it.

KHSAA - it's not too late

As with all things during COVID, we have to be prepared to adapt. With this new ruling from the Governor, I think it’s time the KHSAA adapts in the right direction towards normalcy with the standard protocols and guidelines. These guidelines just so allow for more participation. Do the right thing KHSAA, Julian Tackett, Mike Barren, and board of controls.

    Region 2 Rankings

It’s what the KHSAA wants to do, take away an opportunity from 40+ top ten wrestlers the shot at top 8.

    USA Wrestling State Tournament?

Hopefully the week after state and maybe give an extra pound. Definitely something that would be incredible. There’s going to be 24 kids in each weight class not make it to state. So two weeks between wrestling, someone may gain a pound or two

    State news

This whole situation is just pathetic. The excuses the KHSAA are coming up with make no sense. Just shows their ignorance when it comes to wrestling tournaments, and wrestling in general. Mike Barren and Julian Tackett, you did this. Hope you get all the backlash you deserve and at least give wrestling a chance next year. Please get someone on the BOC that knows wrestling, will stand up for wrestling, and actually have a backbone to take no for an answer when dumb*ss proposals are presented in the future. It’s for the kids.

Go ahead and give Trinity, St X, or Johnson Central a major point advantage then. Not fair at all to those in the really tough regions. Thanks KHSAA.

    A Better Post-Season Proposal

Very well put together. I believe this is a proposal that everyone in the wrestling community should get behind and have an urgency to fight back against the current KHSAA plan. I really hope coaches/AD/superintendents step in and fight for what is right.

    State news

Should let 12 kids into state. The 4 semistate winners get first round bye, and that gives 3rd place kids at semi state the chance to wrestle their way back into discussion. But, it won't happen. I know for a fact Mike "Baron" was proposed an option for state over the phone that allowed 32 man brackets, followed protocol by utilizing 4 different gyms (coaching may or may not have been an issue) and allowed spectators. Second day, the top 8 would have been brought back to finish all in the same gym. Coach Dennis Walls, formerly of Union County, was the one who proposed this idea to Julian Tackett and Mike Barren. They said it was a great idea that could definitely work and in Lexington. What they did was take those four sites and made it into a semi-state and brought on only the top 2 from semi-states. We have a BOC that only utilizes athletic directors and pushed out all of the acting wrestling coaches, making it easier for the KHSAA to say screw off, we don't care about wrestling and do it their own way. Have athletic directors that don't have a backbone to stick up for their regions wrestling teams. Every other state tournament has ran normally. Football used Kroger Field. We all know dang well that the Sweet Sixteen will use Rupp Arena, and not be forced to semi-states and only bring in teams (same ratio they dropped wrestling by) to the actual state tournament. They should be ashamed of themselves.

    State news

I went with top 10 to keep it simple. Also went with top 10 teams. Used Rangers latest rankings. "Miss State" is top 10 kids who will not make it to state. There is a big discrepancy between the "semi states". In the team breakdown, "make state" is top 10 kids on given team that are top two in the semi state. Outside qualifiers are kids who are ranked outside of the top ten but top 2 in their given semi state. St. X and Trinity lead the way with 3 kids each ranked outside of the top ten but qualifying for an 8 man state. Eli Mattingly-Neal (#18 @ 126) and Ayden Lehman (#24 @ 132) are some of the big ones that pop out. Lehman did wrestle 126 recently. Kid that potentially won't qualify: 106: Hardin, Campbell, Raney, Matt 113: Teutsch, McKee, Griffith 120: Lattin, Benner, Stanley 126: Quintana, Tucker, Stull, Isaacs 132: Herron, Ross, Lewis, Nardelli 138: Stull, James, Andreoni, Johnson, Sproles 145: Bowers, Chapman 152: Phan, Grandstaff 160: Ketchen-Carter, Conrad, Hyden 170: Slayton, Baker 182: Riggins, Walls, McWilliams, Haggan 195: Adams, Whitehead, Hatchett 220: Boone, Elliston, Brooksbank, Leicht 285: Mooney, Arthur, Smith Some state champs, runner ups, multi time placers that are getting screwed. Some, it is their senior year. Way to go KHSAA
