    10 Reasons Why...

Beach Wrestling (also called sand wrestling) is a simple version of wrestling. Wrestlers are competing on their feet and can score a point if they can earn a takedown or push their opponent out-of-bounds. Two points wins a match. Wresters can pin their opponent if they can force the opponent’s back to the sand. Here are 10 great reasons to participate in beach wrestling. If you have questions on how to conduct a contest, or want info about the AAU Beach Wrestling Worlds, held in Norfolk, Virginia on October 8th, send me an email at robertteet@yahoo.com 1. Enjoy the Outdoors- Take the time to enjoy the great weather. Play Frisbee, corn hole, or enjoy a picnic. Friends and family are more likely to watch you wrestle if they are able to enjoy the outdoors too, more likely than attending an indoor wrestling contest. 2. Contests- Sand Wrestling events are simple to host, and help wrestling become more popular when held in conjunction with other outdoor events. AAU and USA Wrestling sanction Beach Wrestling contests. Many matches last just a few minutes, so only 2-3 wrestling rings are usually used. Team Duals and two-out-of-three match modifications have also been used. 3. New Wrestlers- Wrestling is very natural, but the complexities of mat styles can often discourage participation. The simple rules encourage new athletes to join the world of wrestling. 4. New Spectators- Witnessing an outdoor sporting event will certainly gather attention, even if they didn’t hear about the contest. The rules are simple for everyone to understand, even without prior wrestling knowledge. Fast paced bouts help hold the attention of onlookers. 5. Retired Wrestlers- The simple rules of sand wrestling encourages retired wrestlers to compete, especially in events that offer 30+ or 35+ age groups. When seasoned wrestlers are encouraged to return to wrestling, there are more opportunities for youth wrestlers to learn from experienced athletes. 6. Women Wrestlers- Many beach wrestling contests feature women’s divisions, encouraging more women wrestlers. As the number of female participants continues to grow, more high school state associations will consider sanctioning girls wrestling. 7. Neutral Position- Sand Wrestling is primarily contested with each wrestler on their feet, a great opportunity to improve their skills at the Neutral position. Wrestling on your feet is used in every style of wrestling, yet many folkstyle programs focus primarily of ground wrestling. 8. Smarter Wrestlers- The sand slows down each wrestler’s footwork abilities, allowing time to think about their next move. It is easier to learn from their mistakes. 9. Intense Training- The uneven surface of the sand shifts your weight and forces you to engage more muscles. This includes exercises (such as jogging, bear crawling, jumping, etc) in addition to wrestling, which will help you become a better wrestler on the mat. 10. Chance to Swim- If you are practicing on a beach, or at a local park with a nearby pool, then take advantage of the chance to swim after sparring. No other activity builds muscles and burns fat as effectively.
  3. The first AAU Beach Wrestling World Championships are scheduled for October 8th, 2011 in Norfolk, VA. Nearly all age groups will compete, including Veterans (30+). There will also be a Women's High School and Women's Senior (18+) division. Wrestler's may enter twice (their age group and next oldest age group) for a chance to become a 2x AAU World Champion, and both contests for each double entered wrestler will count for thier team. Veterans can also enter in the Senior (18+) division. For those who are interested in more information, please send an email to robertteet@yahoo.com for a flyer for the event. Thanks
