ATTENTION Wrestling fans! All Star Classic is back!

Yes, we were discussing. Did you vote in Jason’s poll? You should. -

I think the greater point was that the top program in the state doesn’t participate. The fact this event is in the middle of football season was a close second though. What is really interesting is Jason being so think skinned about a critique. -
Oh, poor fella. Can’t take a critique?

I won’t defend points I never made. Ignorant because I have a different opinion than yours? Fathom the possibility that you’re not as right about everything as you think you are. Go rank some 11 year olds. -
Barnesville Ohio Tournament (Dec. 16-17)
Nkawtg replied to wrestlingready's topic in High School Wrestling
This is a great tournament and always has been. It doesn’t have the big school Ohio powers but has many D II and D III state placers. My alma mater used to win this every year! Go Claymont Mustangs!! -

I think you, and people like you, who push and push to make Kentucky wrestling a year round endeavor are hurting the sport in general. Your sons seem to have excelled and done well in the sport. Good for you and them. Maybe they didn’t play other sports? Maybe they didn’t like football? I don’t know. But doing this All Star event in Oct just takes away from the wrestlers who do other fall sports. Your attitude towards anyone questioning anything you do just reveals your “little man syndrome.” I love the sport. My kids are in college and med school so I have no skin in the game. Play the victim all you want. -

So now I’m a “pain in the backside”!? All for asking why you conduct an “All Star” match in the middle of football season in a relatively small state? An “All Star” match without including (for whatever reason) the top program in the state with many of the top kids!? It’s criticism. Not sure why you think you should be immune from it. -

Nah. It’s still a free country. I’m just asking simple questions. What’s the beef Jason has with Union County and why have this match in the middle of football season? -

Flo is national. That’s a bit different. Kentucky is a smaller state with probably a few dozen full teams. To do this event knowing the best program in the state won’t participate is odd. As you know numbers statewide are still kind of low. I’m just asking why don’t you put this on a month later when football winds down? And why so thin skinned about it? I have to put on an event to ask questions and/or criticize your timeline? What’s the beef you have with Union County? Why do you think they don’t participate? -

Kind of silly to say you’re trying to put #1 versus #2 when Union Co isn’t involved isn’t it? Why have this literally in the middle of football season? -
That’s simply nonsense. The population center is more than “a bit further north” than Taylor county. I get it. Things happen. People just want to do what they love. Too many “state” tournaments are held far from Louisville though, which is the population center of the state.
-
Uh, maybe because Taylor County HS is a 320 mile round trip from Northern Kentucky? Why have a tournament on an early Saturday morning so far away from the state’s population centers?

In a conference without wrestling. What does this mean for its wrestling team?

A lot can and will change. I do not foresee a traditional high school wrestling season though. The risks are too high. Best case is an after Christmas start, which is a good thing for the health of the sport in Ky anyway.

The 2020 Spatola Classic hosted @ SportsPlus Cincinnati October 3rd

You just proved my point. There aren’t many freshman ranked at the higher weights because they are competing against upperclassmen. The rankings at 106 are simply a ranking of freshman and sophomores. Change is coming to the weight class structure. Of course we need to enable our younger kids to compete. But to argue a 106 weight class is the best of the best is just lightweight bias and not accurate at all.
-
Nah. The top freshman and sophomores at 106 aren’t any more skilled wrestlers than the top frosh/sophomores at 126 or 152. The difference is the heavier weights are competing against upperclassmen while the top kids at 106 are dominating middle schoolers and freshman. It doesn’t make any sense to carve out a class for middle schoolers and 9th/10th graders. ...and don’t take it personally. I’m sure your kid is special. He just shouldn’t be called a high school state champion. Jealous? Nah. I’m way passed that and so are my boys. They’ve done pretty well for themselves and I’m happy, too. There aren’t 10 schools in Kentucky who can field an entire team. There are too many weight classes making for too many forfeits.
-
Unless your last name is Myers, a 7th grader will be 12 or 13 years old. I see two 7th graders ranked at 106 and no seniors. For that reason I think it should be a JV only weight. 8 of 25 ranked are not even old enough to be in high school!! That’s ridiculous
-
106 should absolutely be a weight class...just at the JV level. 8th and 9th graders who win state at 106 aren’t better wrestlers than their peers at heavier weights who get handled by seniors. Of course they end up more decorated but only because they win against middle schoolers. Not a single senior is ranked at 106 this season in Ky. it’s just not as impressive when a freshman wins a state title at that weight class because freshman nearly always win it.
-
Spoken like a dad and not a wrestling fan. 106 should be eliminated at the varsity level. Lowest class should be 113. Too many 12 year olds competing in “high school” events. Virtually no seniors and few juniors at that weight class. Too many high school weights presently and the no-brainer move is to eliminate 106 and 220. Make 106 a JV only weight because that’s effectively what it is when 8th and 9th graders are winning it year in and year out.

4th year of college wrestling and he can’t place at the Lindenwood Open!? Ygtbsm!!

The most intriguing scenario to me is that of what J’Den Cox faces. He’s an absolute stud and world champ...at a non-Olympic weight. Does he drop and face Taylor? I think the cons outweigh the pros if he drops. Taylor is big and strong and talented. I think Cox should go up and maximize his strengths against Snyder. I bet he goes up and Cox vs Snyder for the Olympic spot will be epic.
