Boston on to the second day, Myers and D. Lampe out at 2-2
  5. Doing a bit of research for Ranger since I'm just waiting at the hotel for Scuffle to start tomorrow, putting off updating my rankings. Vidit has more than one loss per trackwrestling having lost to Parker from Western Hills (UR), Crouch from Central Hardin (UR), Wooten from Fort Knox (UR), and Gay from Danville (23rd). I think you made the mistake here of seeing "Central" and assuming it was Crouch from Central Hardin (It's Calloway from Louisville Central). Louisville Central High School and Central Hardin High School are two storied and successful programs but are two different high schools. I remember back in the day my dad would mix up Campbell County and Fort Campbell when looking at rankings, it's a pretty common thing. Per trackwrestling Robertson has lost to Starcher of Pike County Central (UR), Peyton from Western Hills (UR), and Galusha from Scott County (UR). Ashbaugh is undefeated per track but has no wins over any ranked opponents Records can be deceiving thus they are one of the last things we use for rankings

KY Teams Wrestling at the GMVWA

The Brown/Jordan match was a strange finish. Brown was actually doing really on his feet, gets caught and cheap tilted by Jordan when out of the blue the ref calls the pin while Brown is getting tilted. Honestly I would say Jordan was even surprised by the call. Not that the final result would've been any different, but it was a somewhat odd call

    Region 1 Rankings 12/20

Decided to give another update before getting on a plane tomorrow and being away from my computer for awhile. Still a lot of guesswork involved in predicting where some weights will look wrestler wise but some weight classes seem to be solidifying and in cases like 160 are starting to look extremely tough. If I have the team I will try to post Team Rankings in the next couple days, otherwise I will just have someone do the math for me, it's not that hard just time consuming 106 1. Zeke Escelera, Union County (1) 2. Austin Gibson, Christian County (UR) 3. Keaton Elliot, Calloway County (2) 4. Dylan Walls, Caldwell County (3) 5. Nathanial Jenkins, McCracken County (6) 6. Caige Clark, Ohio County (4) With a KOB title and some wins over state level wrestlers Austin Gibson makes his rankings debut as a third name to throw in the hate against Elliot and Walls. I currently see this as a tight race between the three I mentioned as they compete for that second spot behind Escelera. Jenkins can slip in the top 4 on a good day. 113 1. Austin Grant-Hall, Christian County (1) 2. Gabe Adams, Union County (2) 3. Ethan Furtrell, Trigg County (UR) 4. Eli Peyton, McCracken County (3) 5. Colin Walls, Caldwell County (4) 6. Zander Bunch, Ohio County (6) Few changes for this week outside of swapping Dubois and putting in Furtrell but the 4-6 spot appears to be closely contested. Also keep an eye on Paducah's Quinn Atnip. 120 1. Sam Bacon, Union County (UR) 2. Jakerion Merritt, Christian County (3@126) 3. Devonta Turner, Trigg County (3) 4. Ray Hamilton, Paducah Tilghman (4) 5. Ethan Wells, UHA (5) 6. Jack Probus, Ohio County (6) Swapped in Bacon and Merritt but I don't see a reason to change their spot for now. Bacon has an outside shot at the state title, I was very impressed. 126 1. Dylan Martin, McCracken County (1) 2. Payne Carr, Union County (2) 3. Nick Dickerson, Calloway County (2@132) 4. Shane Grey, Ohio County (5) 5. Isaac Aguier, Trigg County (4) 6. The top three at this weight are really tough. Four and Five are right next to each other, it's a toss up really. With the sixth spot I decided to just leave it blank because I couldn't decide between the remainder. 132 1. Saul Ervin, Union County (1) 2. Cameron Dearmond, Hoptown (2@138) 3. Ishmael Griffie, Christian County (3) 4. Jordan Snyder, Trigg County (UR) 5. David Conner, McCracken County (4) 6. Damien Crisp, Fort Campbell (5) Dickerson moves down to 126, Dearmond comes down from 138 and appears pretty solid in the #2 spot for now 138 1. Bryce Sheffer, Union County (1) 2. Louie Regaldo, Fort Campbell (2@145) 3. Hunter Vlach, McCracken County (3) 4. Kaleb O'Campo, Caldwell County (5@145) 5. Timmie Dunham, Christian County (UR) 6. Still couldn't find someone to finish out 138. It may be a little early but I will put Louie down here before he's actually made the drop. He is a potential state finals match up against Sheffer at this weight. Vlach hasn't had results in awhile so he can potentially be removed next rankings. 145 1. Chance Oxford, Union County (1) 2. Cameron Coleman, Christian County (UR) 3. Rey Vela, Fort Campbell (4@138) 4. Justin Crabtree, Trigg County (2@152) 5. Kestin McClain, McCracken County (3) 6. Jacob Kramer, Calloway County (4@152) Behind Oxford is a really solid battle between 4-5 kids that should be good. McClain has a similar situation as Vlach 152 1. Micah Ervin, Union County (1) 2. Colin Stevens, Trigg County (4@160) 3. Klemmer Nicodemus, Ohio County (5) 4. Seth Slayton, Caldwell County (3) 5. Bailey Conley, Fort Campbell (6) 6. Kevonni Young, Hoptown (UR) Stevens and Nicodemus are two young and solid coaches' kids I am excited to watch the next few year but Ervin is the top here, and also funnily a young tough coach's kid 160 1. Dylan Gray, Caldwell County (1) 2. Jack Hanes, Calloway County (2) 3. Corbin Ryder, Fort Campbell (3) 4. Antonio Abren, Christian County (5) 5. Landon Moore, Union County (UR) 6. Trevor Tilley, McCracken County (6) We have a situation at 160 where 3, possibly even 4 people have shots at the podium as veteran Gray, Hanes, and Ryder have probably the closest and toughest 1-2-3 in most parts of the state let alone the region. 170 1. Diion Leavell, Christian County (1) 2. Matthias Ervin, Union County (2) 3. Ethan Tomerlin, Fort Campbell (4) 4. Kolby Morris, Hoptown (3) 5. John Predes, Caldwell County (5) 6. Connor Hideg, McCracken County (6) Tomerling moves up with a win over Morris. I half expect Leavell and the other Christian County boys to drop come Christmas but we will see, until then he is #1 here. Hideg makes the 3rd in a row for McCracken 182 1. Avery Buckman, Union County (1) 2. Niko Bussell, Christian County (2) 3. Katayvon Anthony, Hoptown (3) 4. Colton Stoner, Trigg County (4) 5. Logan Deasal, McCracken County (5) 6. Dylan Bell, Calloway County (6) No real results to report that I've seen. 1-2-3 remains extremely solid. 195 1. Ross Hicks, Union County (1) 2. Kjauwan Major, Christian County (2) 3. David Woods, Calloway County (2@220) 4. Raequan Lester, Paducah Tilghman (3) 5. Nautica Bonds, McCracken County (4) 6. Nick Owens, Hoptown (UR) I'll keep Hicks at 195 but he has been wrestling at 220. Major and Woods are two major threats to unseat him in the region however. Speaking of Major I have noted that he hasn't wrestled since a DQ at KOB with Raven Knight in his place instead, eyes on that. Bonds like the other McCracken kids has a foot out the rankings door at the moment. 220 1. Chance Orr, Paducah Tilghman (1) 2. Colby Culver, Calloway County (2@285) 3. Deion Lane, Hoptown (4) 4. Michael Elkins, Christian County (5@285) 5. Sean Robles, Fort Campbell (6) 6. Jordan Ware, McCracken County (UR) This weight is a bit of a mess at the moment because I am giving Orr one more week even though the word that he has quit seems reliable. Personally if I was talking to Orr I would advise him very strongly against such a decision but at the end of the day we can never make decisions for someone. Next week (maybe) expect a Culver #1 and a Fitzgerald #2. As for the rest of the weight I will try to figure it out 285 1. David Nikolao, Fort Campbell (1) 2. Payton Snyder, Union County (3) 3. Gavynn Davis, McCracken County (4) 4. Andrew Pottle, Ohio County (6) 5. Seth Riley, Christian County (UR) 6. Jay Emerson, Calloway County (UR) Heavyweight is very empty right now, especially since Nikolao has yet to return to the mat. Technically Pottle is apparently competing at 220 but with heavyweight so open who knows Team Rankings 1. Union County (52.5) Another year, another virtually untouchable Union team. This may be one of the more complete teams Union has had since around 2013 or so. The definite state favorite right now led by long time studs in Saul Ervin and Bryce Sheffer amongst several other elite level wrestlers such as Chance Oxford, Avery Buckman, and newcomer Sam Bacon. The younger batch led by Zeke/Charles/Gavin Escelera and Micah Ervin shore up most remaining roster spots 2. Christian County (30) I would say Christian County is one, maybe two, years away from contesting for the region title and a top 5 state finish. The young talent Christian County has is envied throughout the state with several young men such as Austin Grant-Hall and Niko Bussell who may finally break the Christian County state title drought sooner rather than later. 3. Fort Campbell (15.5) I was honestly surprised the math placed Fort Campbell this highly but Fort Campbell does bring some truly elite wrestlers to the table this year. Speaking of title droughts Fort Campbell is seeking their first state champion since 1990, David Nikolao could potentially be the end of this title drought as one of the highest skilled heavy's I have personally seen come out of Kentucky. Besides Nikolao the likes of Louie Regaldo and Corbin Ryder should frighten any potential matchup in the state 4. McCracken County (14) A lot of expectations got placed on McCracken this year by virtue of an elite coaching staff being brought in to an area rich with the resources through which one can build an elite program. If things fall into place then McCracken can be a dark horse threat for a trophy run at the regional tournament, if not this year then the following year. Whatever happens all eyes should be on McCracken for the near future. 5. Calloway County (13.5) While sitting at 5th Calloway County is still well within striking distance of the coveted second place spot behind Union. Behind their state title threat in Colby Culver and several tough to elite wrestlers surrounding him such as Nick Dickerson, on a good day Calloway is a force to be reckoned with and on a bad day a force to be wary of. Behind them schools such as Trigg, Caldwell, and Hoptown are building up right behind them with talent and lots of potential. 6. Trigg County (10.5) 7. Caldwell County (9) 8. Hoptown (8.5) 9. Paducah Tilghman (7) 10. Ohio County (5.5) 11. UHA (0.5) 12. Mayfield (0)

    Region 1 Rankings 12/20

I used to always call him Zeke because that's what I saw on the middle school results. Then I guess some people started calling him Charles because they found out that's his first name. The Gavin came from a misconception of other people who were telling me I was using the wrong name. My guess is they mixed up Zeke and Gavin since they were both elite wrestlers at similar weights.

    Region 1 Rankings 12/9

Ok so you guys had to wait long enough here's the latest batch. One of the toughest things this part of the year is balancing where a guy has been wrestling vs where I eventually expect them to wrestle. KoB this weekend should give us a slightly better idea of where people plan on going in regards to weight classes. Those of us who coach know that we are constantly bouncing kids around at duals. There are some tough kids who are currently in the wrong weight class and have a position that does not reflect their eventual finish, these will of course be rectified as the year goes on. Also if I missed a result, especially from last year, be sure to call me out on it so I can fix the rankings. 106 1. Zeke Escelera, Union County 2. Keaton Elliot, Calloway County 3. Dylan Walls, Caldwell County 4. Caige Clark, Ohio County 5. Gage Fowler, Christian County 6. Nathanial Jenkins, McCracken County As of this week outside of Escelera, who can wrestle just about anyone in the country, the cupboard at 106 seems a little bare. That said Elliot is a tough wrestler and Walls has huge upside but the shadow of Daniel Knight hangs over everyone. Once he is down we have a matchup similar to the sort of region/state battles we saw with Austin and Blackwell where we watch the two best in the state match up several times. 113 1. Austin Grant-Hall, Christian County 2. Gabe Adams, Union County 3. Eli Peyton, McCracken County 4. Colin Walls, Caldwell County 5. Max Dubois, Hoptown 6. Zander Bunch, Ohio County There is a lot of young talent at this weight right now with potential of more talent dropping in. Grant-Hall is of course a middle schooler I've made clear I am extremely impressed with but Adams is more than a worthy threat. 3rd and down is currently a battle between 5 kids with Trigg's Futrell the odd man out as of this batch of rankings. Also of note is just a week or so ago I was talking to my girlfriend's family in Ohio County about wrestlers we all knew such as Chase Boone, Ryan Bunch, Jordan Woolen, etc. I mentioned how there was still one more Bunch to go, the tiny one that used to one around the gym in a singlet. 120 1. Trevor Poague, Union County 2. Daniel Knight, Christian County 3. Devonta Turner, Trigg County 4. Ray Hamilton, Paducah Tilghman 5. Ethan Wells, UHA 6. Jack Probus, Ohio County This is our first very tough weight class with good kids outside of the top four. I do think the weights stay this way for long. Knight I'd imagine is on the way down to 106 and Wells on the way down to 113. I gave Poague a slight edge but really it's arguably a five way battle with this particular group. 126 1. Dylan Martin, McCracken County 2. Payne Carr, Union County 3. Jakerion Merrit, Christian County 4. Isaac Aguier, Trigg County 5. Shane Grey, Ohio County 6. Riley Staton, UHA I'm interested in the potential of this group. Dylan Martin was tough before but his growth under McCracken's new coaching staff is definitely something that deserves a close watch as McCracken looks to be the dark horse pick this year in the region. Payne has had another year to try and mature his body, the technical skill and talent is unquestionably there. I feel unsure with 3-5 but this is where I've placed them as of right now 132 1. Saul Ervin, Union County 2. Nick Dickerson, Calloway County 3. Ishmael Griffie, Christian County 4. David Conner, McCracken County 5. Damien Crisp, Fort Campbell 6. Brennan Rouse, Paducah Tilghman This is an interesting weight in the sense that while Saul is easily the top guy in the region second place is currently a very close battle between Dickerson, Griffie, and Conner. Crisp and Rouse round out until people move into the weight class. 138 1. Bryce Sheffer, Union County 2. Cameron Dearmond, Hoptown 3. Hunter Vlach, McCracken County 4. Rey Vela, Fort Campbell 5. Joe Fernandez, Christian County 6. It was going to happen eventually but hit my first weight I couldn't fill out. I'm sure we will have far more than six here eventually but until then this is what I've got. Sheffer is far and away the leader here but Dearmond and Vlach can take matches at state 145 1. Chance Oxford, Union County 2. Louie Regaldo, Fort Campbell 3. Kestin McClain, McCracken County 4. Zlato Skuljan, Hoptown 5. Kaleb O'Campo, Caldwell County 6. Gavin English, Ohio County This is a weight I expect people to drop away from but right now two high podium threats in Oxford and Regaldo lead the weight with a good chance Regaldo may cut to 138. McClain leads a solid remainder who are eying 2+ wins at state. 152 1. Micah Ervin, Union County 2. Justin Crabtree, Trigg County 3. Seth Slayton, Caldwell County 4. Jacob Kramer, Calloway County 5. Klemmer Nicodemus, Ohio County 6. Bailey Conley, Fort Campbell Ervin can hang with just about anyone in the state and has some high expectations going in his freshman year. Outside of that it's a virtual free for all with seconds with nobody currently at this weight I would put more than a finger length's edge ahead of the man behind him. 160 1. Dylan Gray, Caldwell County 2. Jack Hanes, Calloway County 3. Corbin Ryder, Fort Campbell 4. Colin Stevens, Trigg County 5. Antonio Abren, Christian County 6. Trevor Tilley, McCracken County With how insanely tough this weight class I fully expect 2-3 of the guys that can drop will drop especially considering the relative sparseness of 152. Gray is an outside state title threat at 152 or 160, Hanes and Ryder can both finish on the podium, and Stevens has an outside shot at the podium depending on match ups. Abren and Tilley are 2+ state win guys on a good day but are just trapped behind so many other tough wrestlers currently sitting at 160. 170 1. Diion Leavell, Christian County 2. Matthias Ervin, Union County 3. Kolby Morris, Hoptown 4. Ethan Tomerlin, Fort Campbell 5. John Predes, Caldwell County 6. Connor Hideg, McCracken County The top four here I feel ok with albeit I expect a couple of these guys are dropping to another weight class. Outside of the top four I feel kind of stumped, well reasoned suggestions are welcome. Leavell and Ervin could have some decent fights if they both are at this weight. Tomerlin is an interesting wrestler to watch but is giving up a lot of weight at 170. 182 1. Avery Buckman, Union 2. Niko Bussell, Christian County 3. Katayvon Anthony, Hoptown 4. Colton Stoner, Trigg County 5. Logan Deasal, McCracken County 6. Dylan Bell, Calloway County If this weight stays looking like this then we have a very interesting fight between a noted veteran in Buckman and a fast rising young star in Bussell. Outside of those two Anthony, Stoner, and Deasal could finish in any order and Bell is not far behind. 195 1. Ross Hicks, Union County 2. Kjauwan Major, Christian County 3. Raequan Lester, Paducah Tilghman 4. Nautica Bonds, McCracken County 5. Isac Predes, Caldwell County 6. Dylan Lynn, Ohio County Hicks and Major are the big two at this weight and both want podium finishes. 195 being what it is you could argue they could shoot for a state title. Lester and Bonds are currently pretty equal in that 3rd place spot but we will see if anyone drops in or if one of the two pulls ahead. 220 1. Chance Orr, Paducah Tilghman 2. David Woods, Calloway County 3. Markus Green, Christian County 4. Deion Lane, Hoptown 5. John Fuqua, Union County 6. Sean Robles, Fort Campbell Until Culver is here Orr is basically untouched which is what you would expect from the state title favorite. The remaining bunch has some ability but isn't quite to Orr's (or Culver's) level. 285 1. David Nikolao, Fort Campbell 2. Colby Culver, Calloway County 3. Payton Snyder, Union County 4. Gavynn Douglas, McCracken County 5. Michael Elkins, Christian County 6. Andrew Pottle, Ohio County Heavyweight will need some fat boys rolling around a bit and pinning each other before we can see it's clear. Culver's stay at heavyweight is 99% likely to be a temporary stay as he is eyeing a state title at 220 competing against Orr. Nikolao has the talent, the skill, and the build the only question mark on him is health. But a 100% Nikolao, or even a 90% Nikolao is my pick for the state title at heavyweight. Team Rankings Coming Soon

    Region 1 Pre-season Rankings

No planning needed for tomorrow so I was able to get these done. They should provide a bit of a snapshot of what we're looking at with actual practices starting in only a little over three weeks. As always a lot of weights will be wrong, little information is known regarding who will end up where, kids who aren't even wrestling will be on here, really good kids who have been hiding in the shadows won't be on here, and sometimes I even just completely miss a kid. A couple schools have yet to send me any info, you know who you are, so hopefully any corrections coming from post-ranking info will be done by Monday. 106 1. Zeke Escalera, Union County 2. Daniel Knight, Christian County 3. Keegan Slone, Trigg County 4. Keaton Elliot, Calloway County 5. Jack Probus, Ohio County 6. Christian Maines, Fort Campbell You know considering I helped coach him with Team Kentucky you'd think I would know what name he goes by these days, is it Zeke? Gavin? Charles? By any means Escalera is a superstar in the making and the heavy favorite at 106. A weight he may actually weigh this year. Behind him is a pack led by veteran Daniel Knight who is sitting at 2nd in the state himself. The weight looks to mainly be a battle between those two. 113 1. Austin Grant-Hall, Christian County 2. Trevor Poague, Union County 3. Billy Eggers, Fort Campbell 4. Ethan Furtrell, Trigg County 5. Max Dubois, Hoptown 6. Christian Grant, Ohio County Like Escalera, Grant-Hall is another young budding superstar who turned heads in their first year of eligibility. An outside shot at a state title leaves Grant-Hall the heavy favorite in the region. However, Poague is a very tough wrestler and you should never short someone coming out of the Union room. Eggers has been someone who has been right at the cusp of being a successful wrestler, this may be the year he turns the corner. 120 1. Cameron Dearmond, Hoptown 2. Ethan Wells, UHA 3. Isaac Aguier, Trigg County 4. Jakerion Merrit, Christian County 5. Billy Pride, Union County 6. Andrew Syester, Fort Campbell On paper this weight is interesting off the bat as it has no clear cut favorite. Dearmond gets the nod here based off of his higher finish at last year's regional tournament. But Wells, Aguier, Merrit, and Pride all have good shots at the region title. 126 1. Saul Ervin, Union County 2. Nick Dickerson, Calloway County 3. Ray Hamilton, Paducah Tilghman 4. Seth Slayton, Caldwell County 5. Ishmael Griffie, Christian County 6. Jordan Snyder, Trigg County Saul should be a scary sight to see coming off of a 2nd place finish. A little bit of fire in an already premier level talent should give most wrestlers in the country pause let alone the state of Kentucky. Ervin, Dickerson, and Hamilton all have big question marks over where their final weight will be. Saul may move up, Dickerson and Hamilton may move down. 132 1. Rylan Ervin, Union County 2. Kaleb O’Campo, Caldwell County 3. Hudson Zwyg, Trigg County 4. Shane Grey, Ohio County 5. Jacob Vickery, McCracken County 6. Neal Aldridge, Christian County As of right now this weight seems to be fairly sparse and the few solid picks I have here are question marks for weight. Hopefully this weight gets cleared up with some early information. 138 1. Bryce Sheffer, Union County 2. Louie Regaldo, Fort Campbell 3. Devontae Turner, Trigg County 4. Zlato Skuljan, Hoptown 5. Hunter Vlach, McCracken County 6. Joe Fernandez, Christian County Sheffer is looking to crown off his career with another state title, Regaldo is seeking to get back on the podium after a two year absence. Both will be dangerous opponents for anyone they come across as the two veterans of the region seek the proper finish to their respective careers. Turner leads the rest of a contingent of tough wrestlers but as always weight question marks abound. 145 1. Micah Ervin, Union County 2. Colin Stevens, Trigg County 3. Alex Curl, Fort Campbell 4. Jacob Bellah, Calloway County 5. Tyler Thomas, Hoptown 6. Klemmer Nicodemus, Ohio County In a running theme for the region this weight appears to hold some of the region's top upcoming talent in Ervin, Stevens, and Curl assuming all three end up at this weight. As always weight is a question mark but no matter where they are these three are future top contenders in the middle weights of the region. Bellah is a talented veteran who holds a decent shot at the state tournament this season. 152 1. Chance Oxford, Union County 2. Ethan Tomerlin, Fort Campbell 3. Dylan Martin, McCracken County 4. Antonio Abren, Christian County 5. Jacob Kramer, Calloway County 6. London Warren, Paducah Tilghman After years of having it allude him, Chance Oxford goes for the state podium one last time. If Bindner hadn't been wrestling like a man possessed at the state tournament than Oxford would already have that state medal. Tomerlin is a very talented and very young wrestler who seeks to bounce back from a somewhat disappointing finish to his first high school season. Martin potentially leads a couple of tough wrestlers in Abren and Kramer 160 1. Diion Leavell, Christian County 2. Corbin Ryder, Fort Campbell 3. Jack Haynes, Calloway County 4. Kestin McClain, McCracken County 5. Caleb Riley, Caldwell County 6. Malik Cunningham, Trigg County A huge question mark here is Ryder's health. A healthy Ryder could potentially upend Leavell and take the region. All of the top three guys here are podium threats just with minor question marks over them such as health and weight. The remainder fighting for 4th should not be ignored by any means. 170 1. Dylan Grey, Caldwell County 2. Avery Buckman, Union County 3. Niko Bussell, Christian County 4. Johnathon Bowling, McCracken County 5. Bryan Grant, Ohio County 6. Bailey Conley, Fort Campbell The top three here are among the Region's best. Proven veterans in Grey and Buckman alongside upcoming star wrestler Niko Bussell. Outside of the top three are tough wrestlers but currently I am unsure if they pack statewide punch. 182 1. David Woods, Calloway County 2. Matthias Ervin, Union County 3. Katayvon Anthony, Hoptown 4. Colton Stoner, Trigg County 5. Daniel Moll, Caldwell County 6. Evan Martin, McCracken County Woods and Ervin set up a potentially very interesting battle for the top of the 182 spot. Anthony is more than good enough to play spoiler to either of the two's region finals hopes. Stoner, Moll, and Martin are all three very dangerous wrestlers who could slip into the fourth spot and be a tough matchup. 195 1. Jackson Fitzgerald, Paducah Tilghman 2. Kjawuan Majors, Christian County 3. Josh Efinger, Calloway County 4. Payton Ervin, Union County 5. Mark Diaz, Trigg County 6. Joey Mickley, Fort Campbell As is the nature of this weight there are a lot of questions about 195. Right now Fitzgerald, Majors, and Efinger are a solid top three but there is a chance someone else may slide into the weight class and shake up the qualifying spots. If the current meat grinder at 220 is any indicator expect those who can to be keeping their eyes at other weights if possible. 220 1. Chance Orr, Paducah Tilghman 2. Colby Culver, Calloway County 3. Ross Hicks, Union County 4. Tige Littlefield, Caldwell County 5. Logan Deasal, McCracken County 6. Jake Miller, Hoptown From top to bottom this may be the toughest weight in the region. Orr and Culver are state final threats and both hold respectable shots at upsetting Brandon Reed. Hicks is also eyeing a high podium finish, either here or perhaps at a lower weight. Littlefield has been competing for a long time and this is a year even he could find himself on the podium. Logan is one of the better young upper weights in the state and played spoiler at regionals last year, with that first year under his belt and moving into high school he definitely has the talent to turn heads. Miller is a tough wrestler currently stuck at a tough weight. 285 1. David Nikolao, Fort Campbell 2. Gavynn Davis, McCracken County 3. Payton Snyder, Union County 4. Deion Lane, Hoptown 5. Zach Langhi, Christian County 6. Xavier Chappell, Paducah Tilghman A big key here is how Nikolao has recovered from his injury. If he is even close to 100% then he is my pick to win the state title. Size, speed, strength, athleticism... heavyweights with a toolset like Nikolao's are rare. Davis and Snyder can take a few matches at state themselves depending on how they have developed. Lane sits comfortably in that fourth spot as the remaining heavyweight field is still a bit hazy. Team 1. Union County (44.5) Union just has too much young and too much proven talent this year, hence they are eyeing another state title. Someone has to remind me because I can't remember off the top of my head the last time Union didn't win the Region One title, I want to guess 2005. 2. Christian County (22) Out of all the teams over the years that have battled for second behind Union over the past few years none have been more consistent than Christian County. Bolstered by some of the best young talent I'd say the Colonels have ever seen Christian County should feel very confident going into this season with nowhere to go but up. 3. Fort Campbell (20) A calamitous collection of injuries coupled with an already very young team left Fort Campbell with perhaps the most disappointing finish at the regional tournament for a long time. A healthy Fort Campbell is a formidable state power and hopefully now their youth will start to morph into an experienced group of dangerous veteran wrestlers. 4. Calloway County (17.5) While not quite packing as much firepower as they have during their dark horse runs the past two seasons Calloway still has enough tough wrestlers, led by state title threat Colby Culver, to be a serious threat for another run at second in the region. 5. Trigg County (14.5) Trigg is coming off one of their best seasons since the program's revival. The last face of those first teams has moved on and Trigg now functions purely off of the identity they have built for themselves. The pieces are definitely there for a dark horse tournament run from an already dangerous duals team. 6. Paducah Tilghman (13) I've always said that Paducah is a full team away from being a regional powerhouse. Yet again Paducah threatens with a state title threat in Chance Orr who is the sort of piece coaches dream of building a team around. Some dedicated recruiting and a full lineup Paducah Tilghman is a scary thought. 7(t). Caldwell County (10.5) This group of Caldwell wrestlers have been around for a longtime, been competing since 7th graders mostly. A couple individual pieces will seek to elevate the rest of the team to a top 5 regional finish. 7(t). Hoptown (10.5) The deadly dark horse from only a couple years ago. Hoptown may be in a bit of a rebuilding period but holds a handful of wrestlers right on the cusp of being powers in the region. 9. McCracken County (9) McCracken appears to be finally turning the corner and hitting its stride as a newer program. Several young and talented upperweights bolster a team that is starting to generate respect in the area. 10(t). Ohio County (3) Not too long ago Ohio County was one of the most feared teams in the region. The potential is still there, it just needs to be developed. 10(t). UHA (3) Sort of a mixture between Ohio County and Paducah. UHA has never lacked the talent, but ever since their last large team in 2009, they've lacked the numbers. 12. Todd County Central (0) A season under their belt and hopefully Todd County Central will start to see some dividends pay off

    Region 1 Pre-season Rankings

Ok so I got all the lineups for the region filled in. I was a little inconsistent, most of the time if that's where they've been wrestling that's what I put them but there are some cases with say Union I predicted moves that haven't really happened yet. I kept some guys in who haven't wrestled yet but I expect to wrestle soon. They're taking a test tomorrow so I should be able to get rankings up by then. I want to get them down before heading up to Ryle where I will get to see how Union looks at least.

    Region 1 Pre-season Rankings

Here's a tip for future rankers out there. The way I work my system because I rank a much smaller number of wrestlers then say a ranger is to make perspective lineups for each team then make rankings based off of that. Obviously this is WAY too much work for state level rankings but it's what I've been doing at the regional level for how long now 6 or so years? And I think it's been pretty effective. Don't let someone like Josh Lowe or my boy CP convince you that there is some special secret to ranking, it's just finding the time to dig through all of the data.
